I live in cheltenham and today went to the races with some friends as usual. Had a lovely day went for a meal and a few drinks then went to get a bus.
There was a ten minute wait and so I popped into the chippy to get some chips for me dh.
Group of men in there totally managed to scare and intimidate me.
Would you like a savaloy up your back door you slut etc etc. I was alone I am a 45 yr old mother of five wtf?
I have seriously led a very unsheltered life and although wasn't shocked I am angry to my very core. How feckkng date they?
I gave them a mouthful back but I'm just so angry now.
I'm on the bus and feel like crying.
Why do we have to put up with this bolocks?
I just needed to rant.

Oh led that is so bloody sad - I know how much you were looking forward to it and have enjoyed it in the past.

Lteve that is so shocking. Must have been scary for you to still resist sweepstakes to this day.

That is frightening. I just assumed that all the leeriness and abuse was a recent thing - evidently not.

Horrible. And the strippers. I have just ranted at dd about it. The pubs don't need strippers - what's the reason. Not to drum up custom.

MyHeadWasInTheSandNowNot · 15/03/2013 22:09

Ledkr - sorry to hear about last night :( I'm glad you had a better night tonight - shame it was due to DH being there.

I never thought Cheltenham would be like that, I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

aquashiv · 15/03/2013 22:11

LtEveDallas that has made me sick to the core reading this.

SPBInDisguise · 15/03/2013 22:14

ledkr sorry this has happened bt well done for standing up for yourself
If your comments make one of them think, even if it takes a few months (sloooooow brain processing) then it was worth it

GreenShadow · 15/03/2013 22:19

I have friends who let out rooms to visitors during race week - make an absolute fortune, but can you imagine if you had these visitors staying in your home!

One friend has 4 teenage girls - no way would I be letting people like this in to my children's home.

I'm glad today was better Ledkr

LtEveDallas · 15/03/2013 22:20

GetOrf, scary yes, but angry too. I think it's mainly because no-one cared. I told the barman what happened, I told the security guards and the steward but it was all met with a shrug of the shoulders. I was just a waitress and I was serving blokes with thousands in their pockets. I wasn't important.

They used to throw fivers on the floor and tell us to pick them up if we wanted them. Considering I was only getting £15 for a full days work a free fiver was a fortune. Utter utter wankers.

Greydog · 15/03/2013 22:23

I'm sorry to say that it's not just the men. Chester has whats laughing called a Roman day at their race track. The guys who are the Roman soldiers are felt up by drunken, yobbish women, who think (like the men) if you're wearing a skirt you're fair game. My partner said there wasn't enough money in the world to pay him to do that event again, and he has no wish to be groped by females, young and old, all pissed out of their heads. It seems that races - wherever they are - soften the brains of those who go to "watch"

aquashiv · 15/03/2013 22:23

ledkr yes you sound like a courageous strong woman who stood up for herself. Am glad you went back and had a good time. No wonder you are angry. Its sickening.
I go to Newbury alot and only have good things to say about the place.

Jeeps · 15/03/2013 22:32

Just a thought, but would there be CCTV from the chippy so these bastards could be identified. I would have been terrified in your situation. Glad you had a good day today though

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 15/03/2013 22:54

How awful. I picked up a pissed DH from 'Nham this evening, as I have for the last ten years or so. Wasn't aware of any of this nasty stuff going on. Strippers! Shock

Think SH and his mates must be leading a very sheltered life Hmm.

Ledkr · 15/03/2013 22:56

No CCTV which is a pity yes.
LtEve I had that same assault years ago in a club. Like you I e never truly recovered from all the different feelings it provoked in me and so regret not reporting it.
All you locals need to be coming on our next meet up.
It's April isn't it getorf?

I'm gobsmacked at this. Only been to the races twice and it was all very refined, had no idea this kind of thing went on. What is it that makes these men behave like this under certain circumstances? Sort of scary to think that 'civilisation' is possibly just a thin veneer with a wild, violent side just below the surface.

flippinada · 16/03/2013 10:20

Yanbu, that is really, really unpleasant.

I experienced a form of harassment yesterday while walking along the street just minding my own business. A crowd of young boys (about fifteen-ish) walking post in the other direction - as they walked past one of them screamed in my face. Naturally I reacted and they feel about laughing.

I'm still fuming about it now, nasty little shits.

flippinada · 16/03/2013 10:32

LtEve bloody hell that is grim. Really fucking grim. Pure scum.

GetOrf · 16/03/2013 11:36

That is so unremittingly awful to think of you at 15 having to deal with that lteve. And have no support from anyone where you worked. The scumbags. Can't imagine what I would feel if dd had to deal with such things.

Cheltenham meet up is on 5th april - thread in meetups. Can you come ledkr? And anyone else, please take a look. We met up this month and it was lovely.

Ledkr · 16/03/2013 15:17

I can't come I'm afraid (gutted) its one direction for me that night. I can do the 6th but don't worry ill be fine

LtEveDallas · 16/03/2013 17:02

I would have loved to make a meet-up, but I'm in sunny Brean Sands then. Hope you all have a great time. Will def have to keep an eye out for the next one - and take an opportune trip to mums at the same time Smile

Fanjounchained · 16/03/2013 17:36

Wtf is wrong with some men ? Sorry you had to experience that Ledkr. DH is into MMA and karate and was telling me about a female fighter called Ronda Rousey. She kicked the shit out of 4 guys in a cinema in the US as they were verbally abusing her friends. Don't normally condone violence but how good would it be to floor any man who spoke to you like this or dared to put his hand on you.

DollyTwat · 16/03/2013 20:03

For a group of men to intimidate you Ledkr, they must have been scary
You are not someone who takes that kind of thing lying down so I hate to think what you went through.

I do keep my boys in race week as you don't know who's wandering about drunk.

Now you know why I stay in Montpellier!!
