NHS still wasting money

I think I may be being unreasonable so I will put it out to you all to see what you think - my dear friend's mother has lost her life to cancer - my friend had booked 2 weeks paid annual leave, on the 2nd day her mother sadly died. her 2 weeks annual leave has been changed to 2 weeks paid compassionate leave
and then the 2 weeks leave she had booked has been transferred to tag after the compassionate leave has ended.
Whilst it is truly sad that her mother has died why are the NHS spending their money in this way when they are supposed to be strapped for cash ?

What.....of course YABU!!

I get compassionate leave where I work.......do you?? Why should she not not get paid compassionate leave just because she works for the NHS??

Another wow from me!

Rooble · 14/03/2013 16:06

Gobsmacked that you have written that. You're right that YABU

ilovechips · 14/03/2013 16:06

Is this a joke thread? Ae you suggesting the NHS is throwing money away by giving an employee compassionate leave because their mother has died? Or should the employee perhaps save her annual leave up in case her father pops his clogs later on in the leave year.... Biscuit

MrsMaryCooper · 14/03/2013 16:07

It would be at the manager's discretion to have 2 weeks compassionate leave, i think that 1 week is standard.

If this happened to me there would be no back fill costs whilst I was away - my colleagues would pick up as they could and works would be awaiting my return.

Losing your mum is a big deal. YABU

Lasvegas · 14/03/2013 16:07

I am in private sector and we would give 3 - 5 days paid compassionate leave, at managers discretion. ie employee had to be a good worker.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 14/03/2013 16:07

And really, for fuck sake, is she a dear friend??

Jeez, I hope none of my friend were like this about me when my poor mum died of cancer....the shittiest time of my entire life!

Fuck my old boots Angry

EasilyBored · 14/03/2013 16:07

Because compassionate, caring employers who look after their staff, retain more enthusiastic and committed staff who provide a better service.

YABU.

If she doesn't want to take the two weeks holiday, that is her choice.

sick0fants · 14/03/2013 16:10

Biscuit Angry

Novemberish · 14/03/2013 16:11

OP - are you my former boss? The one who told me that since I had older parents than anyone else in the office, I wouldn't be allowed to book my full holiday allowance in case I needed to use some days when they died?

Didn't think there could be two of you in the world.

pumpkinsweetie · 14/03/2013 16:12

Shock Biscuit. Friend??!!- You call yourself a friend.. ..

monkeysbignuts · 14/03/2013 16:13

Have my first ever Biscuit
I am speechless. ........

HavingALittleFaithBaby · 14/03/2013 16:14

Yes, the NHS wastes money. Sending me an appointment letter through for 10.30 on a certain day that arrived in the post later that afternoon (so 6 hours after the appointment time) - that was wasteful.

In this circumstance, however, YADBU.

Binkyridesagain · 14/03/2013 16:14

Shock and you call yourself a friend.

FireOverBabylon · 14/03/2013 16:14

In what way are they wasting money?

Do the NHS also watse money when they let women tag annual leave onto the end of maternity leave?

Your "dear" "friend" get 2 week's compassionate leave when her mother died. She then took 2 weeks' of annual leave when, as is an employee's right, she chose to do so.

Biscuit Just, wow. Perhaps a hug, some flowers and a shoulder to cry on are a more appropriate response to your friend going through one of the most distressing experiences in her life.

And I second what easilybored says. Good employers keep their staff.

fromparistoberlin · 14/03/2013 16:15

yabu

this cant be for real

I am a hard arse boss and I even I think yabu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fromparistoberlin · 14/03/2013 16:16

novemberish. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

seriously????

SPBInDisguise · 14/03/2013 16:17

Grab a dictionary and look up the word "compassionate"

mollymole · 14/03/2013 16:18

I did say that I thought I was being unreasonable, but I have never worked anywhere that gave 2 weeks compassionate leave - perhaps I have just worked for bad employers - when my mother died I was 'given' a day off and asked to make up the hours over the next few weeks.

OP posts:
MrsMaryCooper · 14/03/2013 16:19

2 weeks is a lot comparatively but your employers were dreadful

CurlyhairedAssassin · 14/03/2013 16:20

Meh, joke thread, surely
But 3-5 days compassionate in private sector? Bloody hell, there wouldn't even have had time to have the funeral in that time!
