surely he needs to take things into the 21st century, and tweet the news? Wink

It can be, in theory at least, any baptised Catholic male.

< whispers: where's Tony Blair at the moment? >

PureQuintessence · 12/03/2013 19:38

I think we need Father Ted.

YouTheCat · 12/03/2013 19:41

Father Jack! Grin

apostropheuse · 12/03/2013 19:47

Cantspell the first vote was today, hence the black smoke. I believe there will be a couple ov votes tomorrow morning and the same tomorrow afternoon. There are usually several each day. Need two thirds majority.

I reckon we will have the new guy by Thursday.

What name do think he will choose?

I'm thinking Pius or Leo.

idiuntno57 · 12/03/2013 19:49

Arbuthnot

oldraver · 12/03/2013 19:49

I picked DS up from his (Catholic) school after school club and had a chuckle as the boiler must of been working overtime and was spewing loads of white smoke

idiuntno57 · 12/03/2013 19:49

that's a good name for a South American Pope methinks Wink

cantspel · 12/03/2013 19:53

I thought the first vote wasn't due to tomorrow morning and then was 2 votes in the morning and 2 in the afternoon and keep going until we have a new pope but looks like i have missed a day.

I would like to see another Peter to signify a new hope for the church.

TheDeliciousKnid · 12/03/2013 19:54

How about Pope Nigel? I don't think we've ever had a Nigel.

apostropheuse · 12/03/2013 19:54

I think arbuthnot sounds too much like a biscuit Grin

PureQuintessence · 12/03/2013 19:57

I think we need Pope Urban.

apostropheuse · 12/03/2013 19:57

They never take Peter but I do think it would be a good name.

idiuntno57 · 12/03/2013 19:58

but who doesn't love a biscuit? It might unite the Catholic Church like never before.

cantspel · 12/03/2013 20:00

We have had a Pope Urban twice>But the link to the crusades might noot be to popular

IThinkOfHappyWhenIThinkOfYou · 12/03/2013 20:01

Cardinal Turkson believes that some African countries have been spared the child abuse scandal because of the 'understandable' death sentence for homosexuals.

Mind you, Benedict's policy of having to be vehemently and vocally anti-homosexuality in order to be given the red hat means that the others aren't much better when it comes to respecting humanity. Everyones, humanity, not just straight celibate old men.

idiuntno57 · 12/03/2013 20:13

btw YABU

he'd be excommunicated if he did

Magimedi · 12/03/2013 20:15

Sue Perkins for pope.

No contest. (Apart from Sandy Toksvig)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/03/2013 20:16

We've had a heck of a lot more than two Pope Urbans. I don't know how many off-hand but Urban V was one of the popes at Avignon. So it needn't have to do with the crusades, I think.

I am hoping for Pope Joan II. Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/03/2013 20:16

magi - great minds. Wink

cantspel · 12/03/2013 20:23

We have had 8 Urbans but one died before coronation. Urban Vii was pope for 12 days.

tinkertitonk · 12/03/2013 20:24

I don't get the "straight celibate" thing. I mean, what's the difference between straight celibate, gay celibate and paedophile celibate? They're all the same: not having sex, at all, with anyone or anything, ever.

God it sounds awful.

AChickenCalledKorma · 12/03/2013 20:25

Dear God AuntieStella that's a very terrifying thought Grin

Ericaequites · 12/03/2013 20:25

We could have a pope who allows effective birth control rather than Catholic Roulette. That's what Americans call the rhythm method. 'I can fit you in next Tuesday' works better in a dentist's office than the bedroom.

LizzieVereker · 12/03/2013 20:30

LRD Y Y to a new Pope Joan - but the Caryl Churchill feisty version if possible.

One of my Year 10 students told me he was considering applying, because he might not need 5 A to Cs to qualify. When I mentioned that being Catholic might be quite important he looked a bit miffed though. (I wish I was joking...)
