To think that the current Vegetarian Society ad on mumsnet is smug and unnecessary?

was growing mumsnet earlier and saw an advert for the vegetarian society, which shows a girl on a horse with the caption 'what's for tea?' underneath and then something about horse free vegetarian food.

AIBU to wish these people would just fuck off? I have no issue with people choosing a vegetarian/vegan/fruitarian or whatever diet for themselves and their families. I don't wish to have their choices rammed down my throat.

And it's not like a vegetarian diet is risk free either when you think of all the genetically modified stuff out there. Maybe the Carnivores Society could put out an advert with a three headed child asking 'what's for tea?'

Don't see anything wrong with it personally. They are taking the opportunity of advertising something they stand for at a time when meat munchers are more likely to take note.

Do the Boden adverts get you equally angry? Does it upset you to have their cashmere jumpers and linen trousers 'rammed down your throat'?

I can't see the ad but if it has been done in light of the recent horsemeat scandal then I'd say that's a definite own-goal.

It's hardly ramming it down your throat is it? It's just and ad taking advantage of current scandal.

I'm not vegetarian. In fact I used to brought vegan and now eat meat. So they'd probably hate me... but it's no more ramming it down your throat than an advert for jojo maman (which I often see on here). I don't feel offended or compelled to run off and complain about it.. I just ignore and move on.

Vegetarians and vegans are allowed to be evangelicals and advertise like any other group.....

I think you sound like you have ishoos over vegetarianism! Why shouldn't they, loads of people have made horse meat jokes, the whole meat sourcing thng has made many people think about what they are eating.

There's nothing wrong with taking the opportunity to encourage people to eat more vegetarian meals. People eat far too much meat imo, time has shown time and time again how too much meat, or how cheap meat can be very unhealthy.

You don't have to make the lifestyle choice of becoming a vegetarian to eat vegetarian food.

Surely the ad with the three headed child would be for the omnivore society? Unless you are in fact a carnivore...

The advert doesnt bother me (not that I've seen it, but read another thread about it earlier). Veggies taking the piss out of the horsemeat palaver bug me though, unless the veggies they eat are all home grown, they can't guarantee they haven't been chowing down on the GGs either.

If you're entirely happy with your carnivore diet then why should you be bothered by this advert? Feel free to think "That sounds so smug that it would do the opposite of converting me" but they're perfectly within their rights to try any approach that they think will convert some people and isn't grossly offensive.

By 'chowing down on the ggs' do you mean eating horse? I think most people can tell the difference between meat and a carrot, even if not homegrown.

Right, so it seems IABU then! Maybe I do have issues with vegetarianism as many (although not all I must state) of my vegetarian friends have made comments about the food I am chomping down on, and made me read books about the meat industry, when I have never done that to them.

The 'carnivore society' thing was an attempt at a joke...!

Well yes Yellow, but is everyone capable of telling if their veggie products are actually made from veg only? Not just the obvious ready made veggie lasagne, but how about something like gravy granules? Everyone puts a little faith in the food industry, something being found that shouldnt be surely affects people with any sort of dietary restriction more?

I think its pretty low humour if the Vegetarian Society want to mock people who may be upset by inadvertently eating horse meat.

For that reason I think its a poor advert and probably won't win them any converts.

But you do have an underlying point. The timing is a bit smug and there is a sense of proselytizing propaganda which is why it got your back up. They are not selling a product, so if it is so good, why the need to sell it?

And actually yes, even a carrot could have been in close quarters with a horse steak. Obviously it shouldn't be, but then there shouldnt be horse in beef burgers either
