To think that I shouldn't have to pay £300 more in insurance if I want a car two weeks early?

I'm 20 and I have bought a car, To insure it now the insurance would be £300 more than if I waited two weeks until my birthday so I am 21.

AIBU to think that this is an unfair way to do this?

Insurance is based on maths.

Age is one of the factors that they include in their calculations.

They have to have a cutoff somewhere.

It would be meaningless and a waste of time to divide age into segments smaller than a year.

When you are older and many many years of driving under your belt and have actually paid insurance all those years and never crashed then you won't think it is unreasonable and will feel it is your privelege to have cheaper insurance.

Just wait, 2 weeks won't make a difference.

I totally accept that but if I took a policy out now it would be £300 more even when I turned 21 because I have already taken out there policy, I wouldn't mind paying the extra to take it out now and them drop the costs when I do turn 21 however they said that they won't accept that as I have already agreed to the price.

It's just statistical. At least all you need to do is wait a couple of weeks, could be worse. It's usually a good idea to check how much the insurance will be before you buy, btw.

This happened to my daughter so she just waited the two weeks.

I can wait 2 weeks and its not that that is a pain, It's not being able to get it home from the garage as well. I've had to insure my DM on the car which cost £50 just to bring it back and it means that it is not going to be insured so if something happens to it there is nothing I can do.

Its also annoying that i have a lot of hospital appointments coming up due to my pregnancy and i have no one to get me there which means getting a train and walking when i know i'll have a car at home. I know that that is what I am going to have to do and that isn't the insurance companies fault, I just needed to have a rant really :).

Lots of people who have fully comp insurance are insured 3P fire and theft to drive any car with the permission of the owner. Worth checking your mum's own insurance to check! Also, what happens if you add your mum to your policy as a named driver? Before DH had a stupid accident adding him used to bring my premium down because he had been driving for so long. Worth a check?

YANBU, It sounds ridiculously annoying.

Insurance companies are generally horribly inflexible, but it's always worth Emailing or ringing and seeing if they can be more sensible.

I have recently been getting quotes for my car insurance, which is due for renewal in July. I will be 50 in June, and there is a saving of more than £100 post June than on the current amount I'm paying - this is because at 50 you suddenly become a lot older, wiser and safer .

There are other cut-off birthdays - 21 is obviously one, 25 is another. That's stats for you...

I have added 2 additional drivers onto my policy otherwise my insurance would be in the 1000's.
