AIBU to not tip my hairdresser?

I have been going to her for years and always spend over £100 per visit (once every couple of months) but I never tip her. I think the hair cut is expensive enough let alone adding a tip! And I guess the standard is 10/15% which adds another £10-20 to the whole thing! But the lady before me tipped and now I feel bad for not......! What to do think?

I don't tip. In my opinion £55 for a cut and blow, more for colour is enough.

Iwantmybed · 02/03/2013 16:23

I don't often, usually at Xmas. I don't really like tipping it feels very slave owner like.

INeverFinishAnythi · 02/03/2013 16:29

I tip DS's hairdressers as they are so great with him and the cut only costs £8.50 so I just give them a tenner and tell them to keep the rest. I never tip my own hairdresser though, the price is daylight robbery as it is.

exoticfruits · 02/03/2013 16:29

I never do. It is expensive enough. I hate tipping in general and think it outdated.

purplepenguin86 · 02/03/2013 16:49

I don't tip - I just can't afford to.

scarletforya · 02/03/2013 16:51

hmm. Not sure about this one. I tip but just ?2 or ?3 as there are too many people to tip to give ?5 each.

I always tip but then I worry that I am patronising them if they are a fully qualified colourist.

I got my colour done today and one trainee put the colour on the roots, the colourist/stylist did the highlights, another trainee washed it and the colourist/stylist blow dried it.

So I ended up tipping the trainee who put the colour in the roots and my colourist/stylist but not the trainee who washed it. Argh. This is the type of thing I can never seem to get right.

I'm worried I patronised the colourist/stylist.
I'm worried I left out the girl who washed it ....but tipping three people is madness.....Confused

I don't tip my hairdresser as she works for herself and I know that she factors her costs into the prices she charges.
However, I do pay her more than she asks for the boys haircuts as she charges half what I had been paying at the local barbers and it is a stupidly small amount.

StrawberryMojito · 02/03/2013 16:53

I went today and spent £81 on a cut and colour. She did a good job but there is no way I want to hand over any more money. YANBU.

yuleheart · 02/03/2013 16:58

I always tip £5 and my last hair bill was £160 (Saks).

I totally trust her to do my hair and have never come out of the salon with a different style and thought 'omg its awful'.

Even now we have moved three towns over I still go back there to have my hair done.

aufaniae · 02/03/2013 17:00

I always tip, I though most people did! I don't go to the hairdresser very often (about once a year ATM!) but when I do, I pay about £45 or so. I pay for the haircut with my card, then give £5 in cash and ask them to spilt it between the hairdresser and hair-washer.

I used to work in a restaurant years ago, and I remember hpw great it was to get tips!

Dinosaurhunter · 02/03/2013 17:04

Wow I thought everyone tipped ! My hair is normally £100 and I always tip £5.

freddiefrog · 02/03/2013 17:05

I don't tip, but if the bill comes to an odd amount, I usually round it up.

My hairdresser charges £13 to cut both my girls' hair so I give her £15, but mine costs £40, so I just give her the £40

bluebluecow · 02/03/2013 17:08

Gosh my hair is really cheap! I'm charged £40 for a full head of foils including cut and blow dry. The stylist is really good and I'm always pleased. I give her £45, so a £5 tip but then it's still really cheap!

emsyj · 02/03/2013 17:10

I use a mobile hairdresser and always give him £10 extra, but to be fair he only charges me £45 for a full head of highlights and a cut and blow so still very cheap!!!

PoppyWearer · 02/03/2013 17:10

I always tip my hairdresser. I know roughly how much she earns and she does rely on the tips. And she does a great job.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 02/03/2013 17:13

£600 a year on hair? Shock

Still18atheart · 02/03/2013 17:17

I've never tipped my hairdresser

I rarely tip anything

BackforGood · 02/03/2013 17:19

Over £100 for a haircut ! Shock
No, I certainly wouldn't have.
As a rule, I rarely tip anyway - people should be paid fair and square for doing their job. I sometimes do in a restaurent if the service has been particularly good, but I've never tipped a hairdresser in my life.

survivingwinter · 02/03/2013 17:25

YANBU - that is very expensive as it is!!

I will tip for ds hair as the barber's as others do on here but not my own hair which rarely costs under £40 now and usually takes about 20 mins. I'm not working so it's a huge expense for me.

mrsjay · 02/03/2013 17:27

wow that is so much for a hair do I can get my cut and colour for £40 I do get a tenner off because the my dd and the owners son is friends but I wouldnt tip if they charge that much I do tip my hairdresser but never a percentage that is just silly a few quid should do.

mrsjay · 02/03/2013 17:28

I tip more for DDs hair because she has masses of it and the same hairdresser does a fab job of thinning it out and styling it,

PrincessOfThemyscira · 02/03/2013 17:42

I used to be a "saturday girl" in a hairdressers, washing hair, folding towels, sweeping up etc. My wages were so bad that I relied on hair washing tips. This was mid-90's so anything from 20p-£1 was a reasonable tip.

Feelingpissedoff · 02/03/2013 18:18

I go every 7 weeks or so & pay £130 for hair & beauty. I pay junior about £1-2,stylist £5 & beautician £5. I have no qualms about being fairly demanding. I have to look good in my job so it's as essential as nice work clothes.

My sister is a hairdresser and just because you are paying £100 or so for a cut and colour that doesn't mean that is what the stylist is getting. They get paid the same (usually very low) hourly rate regardless of how much your hair cut costs. She used to get more tips as the Saturday girl washing hair than now as a senior stylist and doesn't get paid all that much more
