AIBU to not tip my hairdresser?

I have been going to her for years and always spend over £100 per visit (once every couple of months) but I never tip her. I think the hair cut is expensive enough let alone adding a tip! And I guess the standard is 10/15% which adds another £10-20 to the whole thing! But the lady before me tipped and now I feel bad for not......! What to do think?

I pay £18 for a wet cut in my local little back street salon. I give them £20 st the till and tell them to keep the change. Don't know and don't care if or how it's split. If I was paying £100 I'd probably still tip because hell, if you can afford £100 you can bloody well afford an exra tenner on top!

it doesn't really matter tho whether the person doing it is making nmw does it? i mean no it's not great, but if a cut costs £60 and colour £120 it is not fair to expect 10-20% tip, is it? Because i save and have my hair done twice a year and i just wouldn't go if it was expected.

Beaverfeaver · 02/03/2013 18:32

I don't. They charge me £45 for a simple cut and I'm in and out in under 30 mins.
And no thanks to hand massages .

Its not what I am there for.

And I will buy the products I want to, so stop pushing them everytime I go, I have plenty left

theDudesmummy · 02/03/2013 18:32

I never tip in a hairdresser

Beaverfeaver · 02/03/2013 18:33

cocnutty always tips in restaurants (so long as there's no terrible reason why I shouldn't), I don't take taxis.

Losingexcessweight · 02/03/2013 18:34

I never tip anybody.

I used to care for terminally ill people, people with days left to live, and i ve also laid out somebody when they have died all for minimum wage.

Nobody ever tips people who work in care homes so i certainatly dont tip people who cut hair or drive a taxi.

StuntGirl · 02/03/2013 18:34

I don't, to be honest getting my hair done is a luxury I can barely afford anyway these days.

0blio · 02/03/2013 18:36

I normally give my lovely hairdresser a couple of pounds as she doesn't charge me very much, colours, washes and cuts my hair.

But recently a junior has been doing the colour and shampoo which takes up the most time so I now tip her (can't afford to give to both!)

I don't tip in restaurants Coconutty but will give a taxi driver the change if it's under £1.

whistleahappytune · 02/03/2013 18:36

Oh dear, I always tip. Generously. I don't know how qualified hairdressers live, let alone trainees without tipping. And what a bogus argument - "the haircut costs so much, why should I tip?". Well, if you can spend the money on the haircut, then FFS tip the person who's made you look good.

Almostfifty · 02/03/2013 18:37

As LookMumNoHands says, they don't get all the money you're charged unless they own the Salon. They don't get paid a lot of money at all and a lot rely on tips. They also get taxed on tips IIRC.

I pay £20 for a cut and blowdry and tip her £5, giving her more at Christmas. Even if you only give her a couple of quid it's better than nothing isn't it?

I tip, not always exactly 10 - 15% (often my colour and cut comes in at over £100, I'll give a fiver or a tenner in cash depending on what's in my purse) but then my hairdresser doesn't own the salon, she doesn't get all of what I pay.

Faxthatpam · 02/03/2013 18:48

I always tip. Not overly as I can't afford it. I always give 10-15% in restaurants and taxi drivers about £1 on average (live in London so quite expensive and rarely use them). I usually give my hairdresser about £5 - they can split it how they like.

I also always leave cash tips as that way the staff are more likely to get it than the business. I used to waitress and basically lived on my tips, I think it's rubbish that lots of businesses take the tips now.

Sallystyle · 02/03/2013 18:49

I always tip and very surprised that so many on this thread don't.

I won't get a haircut unless I can easily afford a good tip as well.

mummybare · 02/03/2013 19:17

I always tip. If I'm considering a haircut/meal out I factor in the cost of a tip as part of the cost. If I can't afford the tip, I can't afford it. I rarely get taxis these days, but when I used to go out a lot and use them all the time, I'd always give an extra quid or two.

It just seems tight not to to me. I understand that carers and others do a harder job for similarly low pay, and yes, they deserve more, but two wrongs don't make a right. If I've got the cash to be using these luxury services, I can afford to add on a little and spread some happiness.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 02/03/2013 19:26

I tip my mobile hair dresser at Xmas only. She is expensive enough as it is despite being mobile!

MrsMushroom · 02/03/2013 19:26

I am shocked non tipping is so common! I was taught that if someone performs a personal service for you then tipping is good.

Hairdressers, beauticians, manicurists etc...also a bar steward who goes over and above...tip them. It's nice. The hairdressers do not earn much at all...tips matter to them.

cleofatra · 02/03/2013 19:27

I never tip.

MrsMushroom · 02/03/2013 19:28

I had a massage not long ago...it was 45 pounds so I tipped 5. A hairdresser would also be given 5 pounds.

INeedThatForkOff · 02/03/2013 19:30

I usually tip but it pains me to do so on top of something I see as an expensive and rare luxury (about £60).

Then again if I don't, be it at the hairdresser, taxi, restaurant or whatever, I feel that the expectation is there and it puts my back up. Ok they're poorly paid jobs, but I wouldn't tip a checkout assistant.

exoticfruits · 02/03/2013 19:31

Hairdressers earn more than some of the people tipping them! If they don't earn enough they should put the prices up.

ChestyLeRoux · 02/03/2013 19:32

No I dont tip as I cant afford it

valiumredhead · 02/03/2013 19:32

I don't know anyone that would give their hairdresser and extra £20 ,thats bonkers. Possibly a fiver.

I don't tip, I pay £36 for a cut which is plenty. I give her money in her Xmas card though.
