AIBU to not tip my hairdresser?

I have been going to her for years and always spend over £100 per visit (once every couple of months) but I never tip her. I think the hair cut is expensive enough let alone adding a tip! And I guess the standard is 10/15% which adds another £10-20 to the whole thing! But the lady before me tipped and now I feel bad for not......! What to do think?

Exactly what MrsJay said. All you tipping the hairdresser just for doing what they're supposed to be doing well in the first place - cutting your hair.
Do you tip the bus driver for a job well done and getting you to your destination safely and in one piece?
Do you give him a tip as well as your usual bus money if he engages in a bit of witty banter and generally cheers your day up with his sunniness instead of being a miserable twat like some of them are
If not, then why not? As it's exactly the same.

I last tipped about 8 years ago . It was In a salon . I handed the lady an extra fiver , the ungrateful bastard gave it back saying " take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves " I was VERY offended .

I have never tipped anyone since and feel no guilt either

Ragwort · 02/03/2013 21:27

Not really answering the original question but I am amazed at the amount some people spend at the hairdresser - £100 ! ! ! Shock - I have my hair cut very rarely and I usually go as a 'model' so try & get it free Grin - but then I would leave a tip or sometimes they ask for a charity donation which I am happy to give.

lucky I am not vain and happy to wear my hair in a pony tail Grin

HollaAtMeBaby · 02/03/2013 21:33

Yes, I tip. My haircut costs £50-60 (my hairdresser is lovely and if the salon has any offers on she makes sure I get them) so I give her a fiver, except for the nearest haircut to Christmas when I give her £10. I also give the shampoo minion £3 if they've been any good at all.

I pay by card but tipping cash isn't awkward if you plan in advance - I bought a pack of little dinner money envelopes from Poundland and put the cash tips in them before I go to the salon, then ask the shampoo kid's name and write it on the £3 envelope, either at the counter when I leave and hand over the envelopes, or I nip to the loo and do it before I go to pay!

Wish everybody would do that. Might just put an end to the ridiculous tipping culture.

Kiriwawa · 02/03/2013 21:41

It's interesting how the default seems to be a fiver regardless of whether you spent £20 on your hair or £100.

I pay £18 to get my hair cut. A fiver seems disproportionate.

PantsInWash · 02/03/2013 21:46

Astounded at paying £100+ for a haircut every couple of months!! Where do you live - central London? Mine costs £45 and that's the salon owner. I never tip, but always give £20 - £40 at Christmas in a card. I've been going there for years, they told me how much I'd spent there over the 10 years I've been going and I nearly passed out with shock! ShockShock

I generally taxi drivers if they've turned up on time and are polite! Never the postman though, ours are rubbish!

AnnaRack · 02/03/2013 22:30

Don't tip hairdressers but buy them a tin of chocs at Christmas.

BackforGood · 02/03/2013 22:35

A question for those who tip their hairdresser because they are on low wages.
Do you also tip the cashier everytime you go in the supermarket?
What about the lady on the 'complaints' desk?
and the lad that collects up all the trolleys in the car park ?
and the girls looking after your little ones in the nursery every day?
What about the crossing warden (lollipop lady) ?
Or the chap that comes to read your meter?
Or the staff that serve you when you are out clothes shopping?
Or the litter picker in the high street?
Or the lady that comes in to wash and dress your Nan every day so she can live at home?
Or the bus driver?
Or the Receptionist at the swimming baths ?
Or the cleaner in the hospital when you last went in?

There are LOTS of people that work on minimum wage, or not much over. I don't get what's special about hairdressers ? Confused

Nope have never over tipped the hairdresser or a taxi driver. Do leave a tip in a restaraunt.

purplepenguin86 · 02/03/2013 22:43

whistle I am one of the people who said I don't tip because I can't afford it. I pay less than £20 for a wet cut, never have more than that because I can't afford it. I don't work because of mental health problems, so my only income is ESA. That means that getting my hair cut costs me 20% of my income for that week. If I tipped a fiver that would make it a quarter of my income. The hairdresser has an income considerably higher than mine, even if they are on NMW. I'm not on benefits out of choice, but because of ill health. What should I do?

rodandtheemu · 02/03/2013 22:43

It's not like a sales assistant or a bus driver at all. They don't try and make you look/feel good. U get a grunt at best half the time as they are so fed up of there job! If u get a good passionate hair dresser looks after u , chats through any new ideas or knows just what u want they are worth there weight in gold. To tip a fiver for feeling great is not a lot .

HollaAtMeBaby · 02/03/2013 22:44

Can we stop judging people who spend a lot of money of getting their hair done please? because I bloody well would if I could afford to

rodandtheemu · 02/03/2013 22:45

purple don't get ur hair cut if ur that skint. Having ur hair done is a luxury not an essential

SpareHeadThree · 02/03/2013 22:47

Interesting nobody's answering my last post or BackforGood.........
Seriously, if you tip the hairdresser for doing their job well (what they're supposed to do in the first place, then read my post - why not the bus driver for getting you home in one piece and being cheery and sunny instead of a miserable sod like some of them are
If he sticks to the speed limit, greets every customer with a wave and some chat, helps you on with your bags etc - surely he should get more than bus money offered?
Why is it different if you're washing hair instead?! Confused
Both perfectly valid jobs.
Tippers are weird. Grin

Who says a bus driver can't make you feel great? What about the little old lady who gets on every day, and hasn't interacted with anyone else all day.
He asks her how her day's been, what's she been up to and tells her she's looking good today.
She's happy, getting a bit of banter. Same with other passengers getting on who are lonely.
Should they all be tipping the bus driver too?
They've been made to feel 'good' by the bus driver.

exoticfruits · 02/03/2013 22:52

I can't see why a bus driver is any different to a taxi driver- they are often far more friendly and helpful.

rodandtheemu · 02/03/2013 22:54

backforgood yep I did tip the girls that came to my grandads. The family gave the £50 pounds each and a bottle of wine each as they were angels! Grandad was a sod! They deserved it. Nope to the rest because I don't get eye contact , personal service. The window cleaner gets tipped and cake at Xmas the wheely bin washers too.

FunnysInLaJardin · 02/03/2013 22:55

YANBU. I don't tip. No one tips me, so why should I tip them?

imustbepatient · 02/03/2013 22:55

I don't tip and for me it is partly because it is not at all part of the hairdressing process in the country I was born in but also because at my salon:

a) there is no tin to casually put it in

b) the hairdresser herself / himself does not handle the payment process (unlike some have mentioned up thread) and instead it is the receptionist, so you can't just 'pass the hairdresser the tip' and

c) I haven't been able to build up a nice long relationship with a hairdresser because everything time I think one is great and has made my hair look fantastic, they no longer work at the salon when I next ring up and request them.

Also agree with the point that lots of people do an amazing job on NMW (eg care workers) who do not get tipped.

Having said that I probably would tip if a salon could deal with points a) - c) that I've mentioned above!

rodandtheemu · 02/03/2013 22:57

spear if they wanted to!

BackforGood · 02/03/2013 22:57

REally? I get lots of eye contact, and friendly chat from all of the people I listed - it's what makes the world go round, but I couldn't afford to set out each morning with a big bag of pound coins (or notes, as some are suggesting) to give out every time someone has a chat and makes me smile.

whistleahappytune · 02/03/2013 23:07

Oh please people. If you are a tightwad don't wish to tip, then don't tip. Don't accuse people who do of being "weird' or seek to justify your choices by these feeble arguments.

purplepenguin86 · 02/03/2013 23:08

But why shouldn't I be able to get my hair cut because I can't afford a tip as well? I am paying them to cut my hair, it's not like I'm expecting to pay less than their usual rates etc. Of course I'm skint - I'm on sickness benefits, but by spending money sensibly I can just about afford to get my hair cut - having to save for a tip as well would mean me having a fiver less to spend on food or fuel or whatever. Why is that more fair than the hairdresser not getting a tip from me (whilst still being paid)?
