To think that only a total idiot drives round with NO lights on, in a heavy mist/fog?

I had to drive a guest to the airport today, through a pretty heavy fog, that got heavier once we got onto the fast dual carriageway - and yet there were still people driving with no lights on at all. Am I supposed to have a crystal ball in the car, so I know these idiots are there? Did they miss the bit in the Highway Code about appropriate use of headlights/sidelights in conditions of reduced visibility?

And would I be unreasonable to bonnet-mount a scud missile to nudge them off the road so they can't be a danger to the rest of us?

It's because they're stupid.

They don't understand that lights are not simply about seeing but about being seen.

I had my neice ask me why people were driving with lights on. She's 30! I explained as nicely as I could about being seen.

So she's one who until then had not engaged her brain! Grin Hopefully she does put them on now.

I often wonder if these are the same idiots who drive around with fog lights on when it isn't foggy, or the same morons who like to have fog lights on to accompany their side lights (no headlights on, dipped or otherwise)
OP, YANBU.

If anyone out there uses fog lights on a daily basis and thinks it's cool, it isn't. You look stupid and you're annoying. Has to be said, it is mostly men under 35 doing it...says it all, really.

I was passed by the same guy three times at speed on a motorway in France a couple of weeks ago with no lights in heavy fog. We both ended up at the channel tunnel and I had a word with him. He apologised profusely saying that the lights should have come on automatically. I pointed out that I think they only do when it gets dark. He said, "Good point".

WowOoo · 28/02/2013 12:52

I sometimes try to alert these people with a flash of my lights.

Sometimes it works - they've just forgotten, but generally aren't stupid.
The really dumb drivers are the ones who are totally oblivious to others on the road.

Pisses me off too.A little bit of thoughtlessness (is that a word?!) causes accidents.

Mitchy1nge · 28/02/2013 12:56

my old car had automatic lights that I couldn't override easily (without stopping, putting ignition key in silly position blah blah) so perhaps the drivers find it a bit onerous just for a bit of fog

Mitchy1nge · 28/02/2013 12:57

although I think that was if I wanted them off rather than on

I don't know, either way, they worked in rain and darkness but not fog

Naysa · 28/02/2013 13:06

It was foggy this morning when DP dropped me off.

Every driver had their lights on, apart from the taxi drivers. I'm not exaggerating when I say that none of them had lights on Hmm

manticlimactic · 28/02/2013 18:41

I have automatic lights but the fog lights are manual.

Mitchy1nge · 28/02/2013 20:35

but usually is not foggy enough for fog lights, you just want normal headlamps and tail lights in patchy fog?

I love love love my 'new' retro ride with its primitive manually operated things, it never complains about anything.
