to think work should let me keep my deskfan for health reasons when we move offices

I am annoyed as they have said when we move into a new air con office I will not be allowed a desk fan. This is on and off at various times due to hot flushes which is probably due to hypothyroid being problematic which I'm on meds for. Apparently it will throw the air con out. I get really uncomfortable I intend to use a USB fan which is very weak and a spanish hand fan, the big fan really helped me so I'm annoyed.

In the summer when our aircon in the office is going full pelt it is freezing......you really won't be needing that fan. Our office did away with fans years ago, awful things which just circulate the warm air and blow paper about.

YANBU but then neither are they. It will throw the aircon out and if they get a decent aircon unit and get it serviced regularly you really shouldn't need that fan anyway.

I have never known successful air conditioning. It is usually bloody freezing and gives me a dry throat.

Give me a radiator and an opening window any day.

I don't think having a desk fan on will upset the air-con. Opening and closing windows is more likely to affect it. Sounds like an excuse to me. There is air-con in my office and it is bloody freezing one minute so it gets turned off, then turned on again when people get warm. Drives me mad!! It's pumps out cold air at 16 degrees, so if you are sat underneath the unit it's awful.

I use a desk fan to "control" my flushes. I would speak to your manager and get the real reason for no desk fans.

It won't throw the air con out - take it from an engineer. The air con will be controlled by temperature sensors which measure air temperature. Using your fan won't affect the air temperature.

The reason the fan keeps you cool is that it increases air velocity and so helping your body cool down quicker.

Try talking to your manager again or take it up with HR (they are usually the first people to complain when it's too hot/cold).

Granite topping - do you have control over the temp of your air-con? If it has a controller where you can set the temp, try setting it at 22 or 23. 16 will be cooling the room for far too long. Also, desk fans can help even out the temperature in the room, removing hot spots and cool spots!

A fan doesn't affect the Air conditioning. We have both in the house and use both at the same time. The AC cycles on and off whether I have the fans on or not.

I often wonder why some managers seem intent on making their staff unhappy for no apparent reason. I just can't imagine why anyone would make a fuss about someone having a tiny fan on their desk! Confused Not the way to get the best out of people in my view...

I hope you get to keep your fan OP!

Move to the north of England. I promise you, you will never feel "too warm" again. My office has no fans and no air con and I think we probably only turn the heating off for the odd week during the "heat wave".

A fan cannot interfere with the air con, they have made that up as an excuse, it is really to do with aesthetics , tell them to buy a dyson fan. Silent and unobtrusive, suggest it as a compromise.

I can get quite panicky when I am out of range of a fan when a major flush hits, it's very difficult to function, fans make you recover far quicker, so huge sympathies, it would be very unreasonable to not allow you a fan.

only someone who has never experienced full on flushing would object, anyone who has to deal with it, would understand it totally necessary.

There's some annual health and safety thing where all electrical appliances have to be tested and certified. That's why all fans, heaters etc were banned in our office. I'll bet that's the reason

Bet the aircon won't work and everybody will have fans or be complaining that they are freezing and wearing coats.

YANBU. What rubbish that the fan will affect the air conditioning. You should keep your fan. Selfish lot!

get a doctor note, to explain it helps your condition and offer to have any fan tested, any decent electrical shop will do so for a small charge.
