Slightly scented tampons - what fresh hell is this?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 27/02/2013 07:19

I was in Tesco yesterday buying tampons. I normally get the Tesco own-brand non-applicator ones, because applicators are just more environmentally unfriendly unflushable septic tank destroying crap. Annoyingly, however, Tesco were out of any non-applicator tampons in anything other than super-plus plus. After some deliberation, ruling out Tampax Pearl because of the infuriating adverts, I picked up Tampax Compak Fresh, because I couldn't see any difference between them and the unfresh ones. Not until I opened the box this morning did I clock the 'slightly scented' bit. Readers, I feel sullied.

AIBU to think that slightly scented tampons are the most ridiculous idea ever?

It took MN to point out to me that Always were all scented now. I missed that as I've been pg/ bf for so long. Obviously I'm steering well clear but the last two times I have been in Boots the Boots own brand (non-scented) has been sold out. Grr.

I should write a letter. We should all write letters.

I mean, is there any time in your entire adult life when you have been offended by the smell of another woman's period and thought "she should use some air freshener in her pants to get rid of that smell". Seriously? Are we being overcome by the fumes in the street, in the supermarket, in the office? No. We are not. We do not need these products, especially when there is no choice but to buy them.

steben · 27/02/2013 20:06

Yanbu this bloody infuriates me!!! Fwiw I think Always might just be getting the message that no one is interested in their stupid bloody odour neutralising scented pearls AngryAngryAngry as I bought some of their pads from the 'silk' range and they had a 'non-scented' written fairly largely on packaging. I just don't know why they do it - the smell is awful and is a recipe for infection all the way.

Foggles · 27/02/2013 20:12

The guy that invented those "Fellas" wipes was on Dragons Den and was sent packing by the dragons.

StephaniePowers · 27/02/2013 20:25

Grin They sent him packing and then all made a face at each other as they thought about his smelly balls.

ItsOkayItsJustMyBreath · 27/02/2013 20:32

Right, I have just ordered my mooncup! Fed up with all this playing on women's insecurities.

IneedAsockamnesty · 27/02/2013 20:56

This site is another exerlent place to get any type of reusable San pro, you may not get a mini pack of love hearts but she ships quickly and most of her stuff is slightly cheaper than the other site.

luxurymoon.co.uk/

Scented San pro is the devils work it can make your fanjo feel like its on fire. Not good

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 27/02/2013 21:15

Have just ordered a mooncup!

Can someone send a link to this thread to the manufacturer? I did that with one of the Always threads. I got some tripe back about how their research showed it was a product women wanted blah blah blah. I don't know who these women are. Young gullible ones who are afraid of their own bodies perhaps? It's getting harder and harder to find unscented ones, unfortunately. I for one don't want my fanjo smelling of cheap airfreshner, like a late night minicab. Grrrr.

QOD · 27/02/2013 21:31

Incidentally, don't worry about applicators as you bin them like towels anyway. I have to use them as I really don't like poking me finger up and can't seem to position correctly.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 27/02/2013 21:35

I sent a link earlier, EuroShag.

No response yet.

Lol. Exactly! And you can smell them from outside your clothes - it is (taxi)rank.

EuroShaggleton · 27/02/2013 21:50

Excellent, Chaos!

Spoonful · 27/02/2013 22:04

That's exactly it Euro, they are for people scared of their own bodies.

How depressing it all is.

slightlysoupstained · 27/02/2013 23:22

Haven't menstruated for about 15 months due to pg/breastfeeding - how come the UK has apparently been taken over by Stepfords with freesia scented fannies in the meantime & nobody told me?

Ewwwwwwwww.

IneedAsockamnesty · 28/02/2013 00:14

I don't think they are actually aimed at anyone other than the bog slandered woman who has periods.

Its just so they can trump out the new and improved line, manufacturers hate not bunging out a 'new' product because they have this idea that they have to remain cutting edge and at the peak of new whatever's,they don't care if the new product is a utter pile of wank and everybody was happy with the old decent product they just want us to think they are constantly improving things for us.

I don't know one woman in RL who would actively chose a scented San pro product (and I do talk about stuff like that) especially one that is used internally, most of the women I know are even careful about bubble bath and soap due to thrush and b vag.

BabyMakesTheBellyGoRound · 28/02/2013 00:46

I am only after clearing up a sensitive reaction from scented pads (blisters and boils on my fanny) so can only imagine what a scented tampon would do to my insidesShock Sad Angry
I normally use washable sanitary products but was caught by surprise by my period on a trip away. Never ever again. Not if I had to cut up my expensive posh towels would I ever buy a pack of scented pads again.

I have never smelled another woman having her period either.

IneedAsockamnesty · 28/02/2013 00:50

Baby.

That happened to me it looked and felt like someone had beaten be with a red hot poker.

A mistake I will never make again.

ChairmanWow · 28/02/2013 04:53

I have never smelled another woman having her period either.

No, but you will now. 'Ah, the unmistakeable aroma of late night minicab. She must have the painters in.' Like a big, smelly period signpost.

That reaction sounds friggin awful btw. Did you complain to the manufacturers? Send them photos - that'll learn 'em!

StephaniePowers · 28/02/2013 07:02

It must be something to do with cutting costs in production. Pound to a penny they've worked out it's cheaper to add (blister-inducing, vile, thrush-encouraging) scent to their products than it is to process them enough to make them scentless...something like that.

"Research shows it's what women want" is such an utterly ridiculous lie, it has to be to do with cutting costs. It's the only reason companies like this do anything at all. They will be gambling on scented sanitary protection becoming the absolute norm, and then they've got in early on the game.

If I was a maker of washable sanitary protection, or moon cup-type contraptions, I might be thinking of investing quite a lot in advertising and upping production right now.

StephaniePowers · 28/02/2013 07:15

Unless this is some sort of New Coke ploy? Give it six months, and they'll be responding to customer feedback and getting rid of the scent? I can't imagine they can take the nosedive in profit in the meantime, though Confused

I would really love to see how many packs of Always are sold now, compared to a year ago. Ditto Bodyform, which are just as good, scentless etc. Are they raking it in?

lurkerspeaks · 28/02/2013 08:49

Am so pleased to see this thread. The SanPro aisle has been paining me of late. First the insidious creep of plastic applicators (they have to be envirnonmentally worse than cardboard) and I accept that some people need them.

Now, the rise of scented. When I were a lass and cleaning hotel rooms I used to think the american woman with scented panty liners and femfresh wipe addictions were weird. Now it seems I'm the weird one.

To quote others. I do not wish to smell like a late night mini cab.

Come on manufacturers catch up, in the meantime I really must further investigate reusable stuff.

GROOVEYCHICK · 28/02/2013 09:40

i did the same ,used allways nor realising they were scented and havevgot the most awfull reaction which makes peeing more painfull than after childbirth stitches

mrsjay · 28/02/2013 09:46

I am just wondering when the makers are going to start putting fabreeze in them it seems to be in everything else Grin

mrsjay · 28/02/2013 09:47

I was given a femfresh gift set for christmas once by my SIL Shock it has wipes, wash and a spray I didnt know whether to laugh and bin it or sniff to see if i needed it Grin
