To think my mum is about to be ripped off

I need some advice because I think she is being ripped off yet she never ever listens to me and will probably do the opposite of whatever I say.

About 4 years ago my mother was with aol for broadband. She switched her bank account and changed to virgin. They contacted her a couple of YEARS later asking for money because as far as they were concerned she never cancelled with them. She paid what she owed.
Fast forward to now and she's just had a letter through from SRJ devt recovery claiming she owes aol £266 because she should have cancelled in writing so they are still charging her for a service she hasn't used in around 4 years. No one on the phone mentioned this when she was paying the last extortionate amount and they say on the letter they have been trying to track her but she's at the same address so they can't have tried very hard.
This feels wrong to me, it sounds like lies. The problem is my mothers memory is terrible so she forgets a lot of things. I personally think it's been longer than 4 years since she had broadband with them I think it's closer to 7.
Also I'm shocked aol are even around, who even uses them now?

That does sound odd. Has she spoken to aol to query it? That would be the first step.

And I'm pretty sure they can't come looking for the supposed debt a couple of years after it was allegedly accrued.

They say doctor hamster that because she never cancelled she is technically still with them and it's going to keep going up each month. I think that's whats panicking her but she paid them before for this same thing and yet I feel when she paid them then they should have cancelled it but didn't. I think they want to keep getting more money from here.
Anyway iv had enough of her now, after the way she's spoken to me when I'm the one trying to help her ill leave her to it

DEBT RECOVERY? not court appointed bailiffs? tell them to go forth and multiply! tell them you did cancel in writing ,its not your mum"s fault the never received the letter ,tell them you have legal advice and you will see them in court.I am going thru much the same with3G , i9ts been draging on now for 4 month, debt recovery are unmeducated tossers who cannot get a proper job ,fear them not, also ,if u fancy, go speak to a debt solicitor ,you will find they who are pursuing u are as noted above .best wishes.
