To expect Candace Bushnell to stick to one back story

I'm sure in SATC Carrie said that her dad had left them when she was really young, but I'm watching the Carrie Diaries and her mum is dead and her dad is nice and certainly not not there.

So did I imagine it?

Whats the Carrie Diaries?!!
Im a huge SATC fan!

wannabedomesticgoddess · 24/02/2013 09:34

Books often have their stories changed slightly for screen.

Not neccessarily the authors fault.

Ozziegirly · 24/02/2013 09:38

The Carrie Diaries is the SATC prequel program that's on (Carrie at 16 - it's not brilliant tbh) - surely we in Australia haven't got it before the UK? That never happens.

And in the whole of SATC she has NEVER mentioned a sister.

Ah sorry I thought it was a book.

If the two series have different screenwriters then its very easy for things to get "tweaked" to fit in with that particular show.

FakePlasticLobsters · 24/02/2013 09:50

It is a book as well. Several books by the look of it, I've just seen Carrie Diaries book 1 and book 2 on Amazon.

QueefLatina · 24/02/2013 09:54

She lived with her dad in the carrie diaries book too.

I wondered about that discrepancy too.

Ozziegirly · 24/02/2013 09:55

It's annoying. Surely the whole point of a prequel is to pick up on the bits that make Carrie into Carrie, rather to just be a totally different story with no bearing on the "original" Carrie?

OP posts:
wannabedomesticgoddess · 24/02/2013 09:59

Well the books came first. So whatever the books say is the original Carrie.

SATC was just a script written by a screenwriter based on the books.

Look at PS I Love you. Great film. Great book. Similar story but they moved it to an entirely different country.

nipersvest · 24/02/2013 10:00

in the book, carrie has 2 sisters. the back story was tweaked more so for satc.

nipersvest · 24/02/2013 10:03

posted too soon! - haven't read the books other than reviews online, but candace bushnell probably did stick to one backstory, as wannabe says, it's the screenwriters who will have altered it to fit in with their storylines.

SkinnybitchWannabe · 24/02/2013 10:08

Thanks. I'll look for the books on Amazon. I knew there was a series being made about their first few years in New York. Havent heard when its going to be shown in the UK.

Ozziegirly · 24/02/2013 10:12

Don't get excited about the show- it's nothing like SATC. It's basically a cheesy high school vaguely entertaining thing to have on in the background.

The Sex and the City book was published in 1997 and was a collection of essays more than a proper story, based on the lives of Candice Bushnell and her friends.

I have no idea what it said about Carrie and her parents, because I thought it was dire and abandoned it very quickly.

Then the SATC TV series came out in 1998.

The Carrie Diaries weren't published until 2010 and filmed as a TV show for release in 2013.

I've spent far too much time on Wikipedia this morning (and I'm pleading the excuse of a very severe ear infection keeping me in bed with nothing to do but google and feel sorry for myself), but it does say that on SATC it is mentioned that her father left her mother when Carrie was five, and she never mentions any siblings at all.
