My name is NOT Julie...

So I am reasonably friendly with a mum at the school. Our DC are both 6 and we have known each other for 16 or so months. Our kids play together in the holidays, do a club together and have tea etc, so a fair amount of contact.

I'm called Julia. She has always, ALWAYS called me Julie. I have corrected her twice over the months. Nicely but emphatically. The first time she said it I smiled and said ' It's Julia or Jules, either of those is fine, ' and the second time I just said ' Eeek! I don't like Julie.. it's julia! ' again with a smile. I have also corrected her son in front of her when he has said it.

She is the sort who use your name A LOT. And still she says Julie.

So.. would this irritate you? Annoy you? Not bother you?

It annoys the FUCK out of me Grin

Call me what you like as long as you don't call me late for dinner... Wink

I'm always rather pleased when people forget my name or get it wrong as it makes it easier for me to admit I've forgotten theirs as well!

My 11 week old dd is called Bronwen, pronounced BronWEN, not BronWIN. People ask her name, I say it and they repeat back to me 'BronWIN?' as if to make out I'm saying her name wrong! It makes me very stabby.

FIFIBELLE I think your colleague might be worthy of an MN Passive-Aggressive Medal.

I've just remembered, I used to work with a guy called John. Only his initials on the system were WX. When we asked him why he went by John instead of William (his actual name), he said that on his first day in a branch office back in the late 50's, the manager had asked him his name, on hearing it said 'Oh no! We've already got one Willliam, it'll be too confusing to have two - you're John now!" And thus it was. We were all aghast that someone could arbitrarily change your name like that (and that he had just accepted it!). Weird thing was when I met him he was one of five 'John' s that worked in that office and it was very confusing trying to work out who people meant...

I am Abigail and people call me Annabel all the time. I correct them but really really CBA to get in a huff about it. Both names are quite nice!

Meh. Very few people say my name correctly though so I am used to it.

I am a Julia and believe me nothing matches the fury of a Julia who does not want to be called Julie, I mean it's not even an abbreviation of Julia .My particular annoyance is the pursed lips and raised eyebrows I get when I (politely) correct people... as if I am being a bit petty/ precious/pedantic!

This reminds me of a woman (not a friend any longer) who repeatedly called me Julie, I called her on it every time and she rolled her eyes and huffily said 'its practically the same' I took to intoning 'A' after every time she said my name, but the only thing that worked was me starting to call her Mavis. Her name was Caroline.

OP I'm a Julie and several people insist on calling me Julia Grin
I, too, correct them but to no avail (one of them is the admin support person who takes our meeting minutes so is supposed to be taking down correct info for the record!).
I just can't be bothered correcting them anymore as they are all people who then make me feel as if I'm the one being rude by mentioning it grrr. Who'd have thought such a simple name could be so confusing!

Oh I shan't correct her again because I'd feel like a tool. And I've no intentions of being 'friends' with her.. We are ' friendly' but that's it. I've looked after her dogs at hers when she went away and we always get the boys together in the holidays every week etc... Our sons are best pals.

But still... It bugs me. And it bugs me because she says it every time we meet. I hear it at least five times a week.

If I think about WHY she does it... Hmmm. I'm going to go with ' a bit dim.' Despite her fully acknowledging it ( the second time I actually said I didn't like the name Julie ( apologies to any Julie's !! ) ) and actually saying ' call me Jules or Julia but please not Julie a ha ha ha ' she promptly called me Julie the next time she saw me.

I even sign off texts with ' Julia ' and if we speak on the phone I will say ' hi it's Julia ' ... But no... Nothing sinks in.

Oh god. It's bugging me so much that I'm going to give it one more shot! The kids are back at school next week and ill do it then

I am another Julia who hates being called Julie. It seems there are more of us out there then I realized.

It makes me so mad at work when I sign off 'Julia' and then get 'Thanks Julie' in return!

Just call her by a totally different name, consistently. It usually gets the point across.

Report
Longdistance · 23/02/2013 06:26

Just adjust her name a little op, that might get on her nerves, and if she corrects you, airily say it's JULIA.

I'm Clara, I get....Claire, Carla, Cara, Lara, Sara, Zara...........I could go on, but I just ignore them, or casually say 'sorry, were you talking to me?'

When you write texts, put a capital A at the end of your name.

My adoption certificate has my name spelt wrong, I can't believe my parents didn't check it properly.

I didn't realise this until fairly recently when I had to dig it out for something, I think hen I got married. I want to scrub out the extra letter it really annoys me. However, everything else apart from my blasted doctors has the 'correct' spelling. I've corrected it time and time again but they don't seem to be able to sort it.

My MOTHER gets my name wrong. She calls me by her sisters name or my cousins name as often as my own. She picked it FFS.

I'm dyslexic I fuck up names all the time.

They just don't get past the useless short term memory into the functioning bit of my brain.

I'm desperately trying to put names to faces at a couple of things I do and having huge difficulties as there are too many slightly bald men and women with mum bobs.

I've come to realise I lose the details in faces, just as I lose the letters in words. I also suspect DD1 has the same problem and it's part of why she finds making friends hard.

HollyBerryBush · 23/02/2013 09:29

And the ones who persist with the funky spelling of a normal name - it's
Holly - not fecking Holli or Hollie, just plain old Holly.

Your name is your identity and if people CBA to learn it properly, then they are just R.U.D.E ! What they are actually saying is 'you are so inconsequential, I cant be bothered to learn your name'

I get the name extension all the time. It is not my name. My name isn't main stream. I chose a short version because mainly I CBA to go through the correct pronunciation and spelling of it endlessly. Just stop anglicising it!

YANBU, I get this with my SILs, one has a long russian name and always corrects me when I shorten it and the other tells me her name has an A on the end, but they always call me the shortened version of mine.. so I tell them MY name is MELIKA NOT MEL! Don't stand for it, Julia!!

Report

YANBU it would annoy me.

To the poster much earlier in the thread who kept confusing her sons GF's name with his previous GF. My sister's MIL did this a few times when she and BIL were in the early stages of dating. My sis breezily responded 'please don't worry about getting my name wrong. My parents never bother to learn my boyfriend's names as I have so many' Snap.

I have an Aunty Julia. But everyone verbally calls her Julie, she is never called Julia. Only when writing it do they spell Julia and not Julie.

Strangely though it's not even her real name. I found out the other day that her realy name is Ethel!?
