My name is NOT Julie...

So I am reasonably friendly with a mum at the school. Our DC are both 6 and we have known each other for 16 or so months. Our kids play together in the holidays, do a club together and have tea etc, so a fair amount of contact.

I'm called Julia. She has always, ALWAYS called me Julie. I have corrected her twice over the months. Nicely but emphatically. The first time she said it I smiled and said ' It's Julia or Jules, either of those is fine, ' and the second time I just said ' Eeek! I don't like Julie.. it's julia! ' again with a smile. I have also corrected her son in front of her when he has said it.

She is the sort who use your name A LOT. And still she says Julie.

So.. would this irritate you? Annoy you? Not bother you?

It annoys the FUCK out of me Grin

There was an annoying (and senior) man at work who always called me Angela, my name begins with an A but that's as close as it gets.
After a while I took to calling him Mervyn, his name is Melvyn.
He soon stopped.

I worked with someone called Corinne that I thought was pronounced Corr-in. By the time I realised she preferred Corr-een we hated each other so I carried on.

I have a colleague called Caroline. We had a student for a while who'd call her Caro, Carol, Carolyn, Carolina. So annoying! One day I got so fed up I asked her why she called her the wrong name and she said, "Well, it's almost the same". Er, no it's not. It's not her flipping name! OP, maybe this lady is the same? V irritating.

If course you can correct her again! With a big smile say
"Excuse me... but what did you call me?" Or "Excuse me, that isn't my name." then, "It is Juli a, with an a at the end. " Correct her every time she calls you Julie. I correct people who call me a short form of my name, for example "Patty" instead of Patricia".

Remember ? "It's Liza with a Z not Lisa with an S that's Z not S, it's Liza."

Are you me??? I repeatedly get emails to Julie, having signed previous responses 'Julia'. It's particularly infuriating as what it's really inferring is that I don't know how to spell my own name.

I had a regular dog walking friend - although not really 'friend' per se, we just walked our dogs at the same time in the same park - and I called him Andy for two years. His name was Pete. Luckily he thought it was funny.

Only came to realise when I met a colleague of his (he was a doctor at a hospital next to this park) who also walked his dogs there, and we had a very confusing conversation about pete/andy and his airedale!

Why don't you just ask her why she always calls you Julie?

My dd is Joanna. When she was young people often called her Joanne which neither of us likes at all.We used to chorus "A" when people said Joanne.
She has been Jo for years now but if I had wanted her to be Joanne I'd have called her Joanne.
I think most of the 'a' at the end names sound nicer that the 'e' version
Louisa-Louise
Anna - Anne
Maria - Marie
Susannah - Suzanne
Diana - Diane
I am sure many people feel the other way round but if the Joanne thing had occurred to me I would have gone for Harriet which was my second choice.

I used to work with someone who said I didn't look like a Madeline so she would call me Tracey. Er ok then... And she did (I saved my breath).

My husband is not called Paul. The owner of our local car mechanic garage which we've been using for 3 years calls him Paul. I'm sure he used to know my DH's correct name but over the years has decided it's Paul. This is despite the fact my DH pays the bills using a credit/debit card with his full name on it. Confused

My DH has given up correcting him & now I just tease him when he gets his car serviced! Grin

Our tenant insist on calling DH 'Mark', which although a perfectly nice name doesn't even share any letters with DH's actual name!

A client once sent me an email where he got my name totally wrong in a funny way (let's say I'm called Cilla and he called me Silly, or Katy and he called me Cunty). He sent me a huge bunch of flowers to apologise. Only happened once, sadly.

I used to work with a Dawn and a Don. These sound identical in our local accent. We called Dawn " prawn dawn " to distinguish her, but never stopped to wonder if she minded Blush. I'm too embarssed to tell you what we did about Gerry ( short for Geraldine ) and Gerry ( short for Gerald ) ,who also worked there

Reading more of the posts it reminds me of an email I got before I went on maternity leave from a chap whose email was (example for confidentiality) William Bosworth and he signed off the email Regards Dave.

I got that B could be Bill short for William but Dave?? I spoke to someone who's worked with him before & she said oh yeah he's called Bill, short for William but he calls himself Dave. Why?? If I'd not asked my colleague what should I have called him?? Well I'd have called him Dave because that's what he signed himself off with but it totally confused me & bearing in mind I was almost 38 weeks I thought I was going crazy!

There was also a chap at uni who introduced himself to me as Phil & my friend separately as Alex. I asked him what his name really was & what he wanted to be called & he was happy with either! I never did get to the bottom of it. We just ended up calling him Philalex.

I'm Julia and have had the problem all my life. All my school certificates said Julie so my mum had to alter them. I find it most irritating as Julie and Julia are completely different as is Marie and Maria. Grrrhhh!

I'm Caroline, almost always known as Carrie, but I also apparently answer to Cathy/Cara/Kelly/Kerry/Karen/Ciara/Carol/Corey.

Two of my friends are also Carolines, known respectively as Caro & Callie. This creates further confusion...

You see, this would be a deal breaker for me. I would not be able to get past it. No matter how nice she seemed, I would always wonder about the motives of someone either so self-absorbed or so dim that they could not get my name right after hearing it and being told it numerous times.

I'm not saying I'd flounce over it necessarily, but I'd always be wary about taking the friendship to anything beyond a casual level.

I would really irritate the hell out of me. A few years after leaving school someone new came to work at my place and decided my name was too long (everyone else managed ok with it) and would call me Lol or Loz. I said no my name is ...... and refused to engage with her when she used the silly shortened names. She soon got the message.

Is she usually ok with you ? I always think the constant use of your name in a sentence is really irritating anyway
