My name is NOT Julie...

So I am reasonably friendly with a mum at the school. Our DC are both 6 and we have known each other for 16 or so months. Our kids play together in the holidays, do a club together and have tea etc, so a fair amount of contact.

I'm called Julia. She has always, ALWAYS called me Julie. I have corrected her twice over the months. Nicely but emphatically. The first time she said it I smiled and said ' It's Julia or Jules, either of those is fine, ' and the second time I just said ' Eeek! I don't like Julie.. it's julia! ' again with a smile. I have also corrected her son in front of her when he has said it.

She is the sort who use your name A LOT. And still she says Julie.

So.. would this irritate you? Annoy you? Not bother you?

It annoys the FUCK out of me Grin

Just keep saying, 'My name is Julia' until she gets it.

Dawndonna · 22/02/2013 18:41

I'm Anna, not Anne. FFS Can't you read?
I always wait until the third time before I say that, though.

Mrsrobertduvall · 22/02/2013 18:42

It would piss me off.
I have a very unusual name, so I appreciate it may take people a while to get it right.

I was introduced at a presentation once (in front of 500people) as Barbara.
Now my name does not begin with B. And does not contain one letter the same. Not even the same amount of syllables.

Dh couldn't say my name properly for about 10 years. He has given up and calls
Me wifey or by my maiden name, which is I suppose, a term of endearment in his little world.

andubelievedthat · 22/02/2013 18:42

my fav uncle(sadly now dead) was uncle tony , at his funeral i found out his name was thomas?families ???my fella"s name is Steve, people often call him Dave , he doesn"t get it , nor i, he just shruggs and smiles .

meddie · 22/02/2013 18:44

Another Julie here who gets called Julia and Juliette too. Despite the fact that I have been known as Jules for 40 years, introduce myself as Jules and sign everything as Jules. I feel your pain it is irritating.

tassisssss · 22/02/2013 18:48

Oh yeah I feel your pain. I introduce myself as a poncey double barrelled name and people immediately call me just the first bit.

Or I send work emails all the time signed up Erica-Jane (not that but YKWIM) and they reply Hi Erica???

SecretNutellaFix · 22/02/2013 18:49

It annoys the bejeesus out of me as I have a similar name.

GregBishopsBottomBitch · 22/02/2013 18:50

I get called Lauren alot, its not my name, and kept getting called Clare, i dont bother correcting now.

JoandMax · 22/02/2013 18:51

It is immensely irritating! I'm Joanna, yet frequently get called Joanne - even on official letters from doctors surgery, hospital. And on emails when my email clearly states my name plus I sign off using my name.

It's a subtle but very very big difference!

letdownafterletdown · 22/02/2013 18:55

its better than been called me Julie !! x

DontCallMeBaby · 22/02/2013 18:55

Definite annoying. I've been in new job for three weeks, working with Julie and Julia and not got the muddled once, so I have NO sympathy!

It's confusing though, you start 'Jul...' and two people look up, 'Ja...' and you get me and James. I'm going by Bernard now.

Lovecat · 22/02/2013 18:57

I have changed the names here as otherwise it will identify me instantly.

I used to work with a guy called Simon. I have no idea why, but he got stuck in my head as Ian. I had to mentally stop and check myself in every meeting and make sure I was calling him Simon.

Then, Christmas party, we were both on the same tube home, slightly pished, he decided to change trains to get nearer to his home (he lived further out than me on the main line) but as he got off there was an announcement that there wouldn't be any more trains through the station - he didn't hear and went wandering across the platform, I went to call him back.

Cue me calling "Ian! Ian! IAN!!! Christ, he's not listening to me, he's going to get stranded, why isn't he listening to me IAN! IAN! Oh fuck, his name's Simon... SIMON!!!"

Whole tube carriage collapsed laughing and he did turn around and make it back onto the train in time... Blush

Inertia · 22/02/2013 19:01

Very annoying. Maybe you should follow the lead of Trigger in OFAH and keep saying "Alright Dave ? " every time she does it, see if she gets the hint.

MagzFarqharson · 22/02/2013 19:04

I'm in similar boat... name ending gets changed from 'a' to 'e', constantly... Just ignore people who call me by the wrong name.

But then went on to give all 3 DDs names which could, and frequently ARE, abbrieviated in the same, extremely annoying way.... What AM I like?

KatieMiddleton · 22/02/2013 19:04

Sooo annoying. I have a very bland, over-used 80s first name that occasionally gets spelt without the last letter and that's quite irritating.

I thought I gave my children fairly easy names. Ds is a shortened version of a longer name (think Josh instead of Joshua) he is often called "Joshua" even when everything including birth cert is clearly "Josh". I also get people who think they know better "oh but it must be Joshua". Really? You would think as his mother I might remember his name. Hmm

My daughter has what I thought was a very well known, traditional Hebrew name. Nobody seems to have heard or it or be able to pronounce it. I fear I have inadvertently cursed her with a Julia/Julie name.

FIFIBEBE · 22/02/2013 19:05

A work colleague keeps calling me the name of the person who she thinks ought to have got my job! It is nothing like my name.

porridgewithalmondmilk · 22/02/2013 19:07

I had a 'friend' who did this to me, not with Julie/Julia but calling me a completely different name that just happened to be spelled in a similar way to mine, but pronounced completely differently.

I've stopped seeing her now as it drove me to distraction; it was not the only reason I cooled things off but it was one of many very inconsiderate things she did and I really felt "well, if you can't even be arsed getting my name right ...!"

ToomuchWaternotWine · 22/02/2013 19:07

Yes that would piss me off too OP you are NBU. Correct her every time is the way to go.

carabos · 22/02/2013 19:08

I'm another one with a double-barrelled name, which I never shorten myself - I don't need to because everyone else does it for me Hmm.

I introduce myself as Fancy-Pants and the response is always either "hello Fancy, good to meet you" or, less often " hello Pants, good to meet you". I have given up fighting the force and now tend to use my initials Grin.

Arithmeticulous · 22/02/2013 19:09

I used to have some uni lectures with a guy that was called Stuart but looked like a Chris. Except after a while I could never remember if he was a Stuart that looked like a Chris, or a Chris that looked like a Stuart. Some people just look like they ought to be called something else Grin

Having said that, I have frequently been called a name similar to mine (in that it has the some first 4 letters) - I just wouldn't answer now.

RealAleandOpenFires · 22/02/2013 19:10

Slightly different...
Offical letters that have a mispelt version of my name. Angry
Why do they do it?
Even after repeated attempts of informing them. Maybe, next it happens I should take an alphabet book to show them the difference between two letters?

BinksToEnlightenment · 22/02/2013 19:35

YANBU

Another one here who gets called the wrong name.

limitedperiodonly · 22/02/2013 19:36

I think it's either an attempt to be friendly or take you down a peg or two. You decide.

I used to work for someone called Colin who used to insist I called him Col. I couldn't. I wasn't brought up to do that. If someone called William liked Bill or Will, fine. But not Col which in an Essex accent comes out with the end of it swallowed.

He used to shorten my name, let's say Sue for Susan. I'd let it go. He used to call Gary Gowl, Deborah Debs, Caroline Cowl. Patrick liked being called Paa' so that was okay, but if it hadn't been that wouldn't have mattered. Everyone else in the office used the names that people liked rather than those we'd just chosen.

A really scary person who was above Col was called Roland. Funnily enough Col never used to call him Ro.

My sil has always called me Sue. I think she genuinely thinks it's friendlier and possibly it was a bit of needle with my mum lost in the mists of time. I let it go. I know that she's horrified at a teenage nickname for her which is really ugly (I have a long memory for her confession Grin) but I wouldn't use it because she doesn't like it. Why oh why can't she do the same thing for me?

It's worse for my sister. sil calls her by a name that's an anglicised version of my sister's quite easily pronounced Catholic saint's name which is common in France and Ireland. It drives my sister potty. Not least because she doesn't particularly like her name but she doesn't want it changed either.

shockers · 22/02/2013 19:40

In a class I worked in s few years ago, there was a little boy who looked like a 'George', don't ask me why! I tried so hard to concentrate and not call him George that I'd always end up saying it. The poor child never complained, but I felt awful. I can see his face now and the only name that springs to mind is...George.

limitedperiodonly · 22/02/2013 19:41

My mum sometimes calls me Miguel. Or My Girl in an Essex accent Grin
