To be tempted to take grapes back to the market stall I bought them from before Xmas

And ask them what the frig they've done to them because they're not off yet!?

Bought them 2 weeks before Xmas at the fruit stall inside the hospital I go to, just past Xmas it ended up as a bit of a joke as they hadn't gone off yet but we kept them to see how long they could possibly last.

The buggers show no sign of ever dying! Confused

My bloody helium balloons always die after a couple of days. Envy

Lol at Dorian Grapes
Op, can you cut one in half?

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/02/2013 13:07

SPB I could cut one in half...

What am I looking for?

I lived in Dubai for a year several years ago and fruit did this there - I had some peaches in my fruit bowl for over two months showing no sign of decay - was most unsettling

SPBInDisguise · 22/02/2013 13:09

Hmm...evidence that they're intact plastic or have been tampered with. Or large, grape hibernating, spiders.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/02/2013 13:11

Steben Confused

SPB I don't like spiders!

I just threw away some baby plum tomatoes dated 'use by 02 feb'... they were just turning a bit too ripe but didn't look bad - GM tomatoes maybe?

The grapes thing is weird though... could be some kind of medical experiment as they are from a hospital!!

Booyhoo · 22/02/2013 13:37

This has been a really informative thread, mainly because I now have no need to ever pay take away prices again! Grin Yhank you for that and those that confirmed I was right to disbelieve the KFC thing.

After having our own grape vines in our allotment last year and growing our own grapes I honestly am totally put off by eating supermarket grapes. I do not want to know what they do to them to make them look like that.

Our homegrown ones might look awful and not appetising but they are the tastiest grapes I have ever tasted.

Whatdoiknowanyway · 22/02/2013 13:42

Book was Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. And 'Year of the Flood' which tells same story from different angle.

LeftyLucy · 22/02/2013 13:58

I had grapes that stayed in the fridge for 5 months and never looked any different. It turned out they were irradiated. It said so in tiny print on the bag. Maybe that's the answer.

But do check the attic for the portrait of Dorian Grape. Grin

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/02/2013 14:00

Latara I think they must be GM or something.

Booyhoo I'm glad I started it too! I'm going to start making big mac sauce now! :o

Bejeena What's the longest your grapes would keep without going rotten or decayed? These aren't from a supermarket, I wouldn't be so shocked if they were. We used to grow the tastiest strawberries, should probably start that again.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/02/2013 14:02

Lefty It's looking like that is the probable cause, these are in completely unmarked packaging though, just a clear box with holes.

"Dorian Grapes" :o I think I may need to nc...

dd2 is a doing a foods rotting experiment for science at the moment, we've had various fruits and vegetables sat in plastic tubs on the worktop for 3 weeks. I can report that...

-the strawberries went mouldy in under 24 hours and are now just ooze in the bottom of the boxes
-mouldy broccoli smells like old feet
-the apples from waitrose and aldi started to grow green mould in 7 days, but the tescos apples have only just started to show a few tiny spots of mould
-the bananas seem to growing some lovely penicillin
-the potatoes still haven't got any mould on them

I'm betting our tesco apples and your grapes have been irradiated

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/02/2013 14:28

Becky I think they must be, there's no other way they could have stayed like this for so long otherwise.

You must be enjoying your DD's experiment!

Did you buy your grapes from the stall I visited, Schro? I bought (cut) parsley for Xmas. Used some of it, put the rest in a glass with a bit of water... Found the parsley yesterday and it still looks fine. The water is gone though. Very very odd.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/02/2013 14:51

Possibly, are you in Glasgow by any chance? :o

Strange fruit and veggies, I am starting to really lose faith in knowing what I am eating, I thought a market fruit and veg stall in a hospital would be okay. :(

OP posts:
HazeltheMcWitch · 22/02/2013 15:00

Nowhere near, but maybe they use the same robo-supplier?
It's a worry, isn't it - cut herbs and grapes really should not last this long!

Jo2508 · 22/02/2013 15:01

I used to live in Moscow and I once bought some huge, beautiful purple grapes from an outdoor market. I then read in the paper that a number of market traders had been arrested for selling fruit from the Chernobyl region :-(

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/02/2013 15:16

Hazel Perhaps. And I am a little Angry as this is where the HV encourages everyone to buy their fruit and veg for weaning, I have been giving this stuff to DS since he was 6 months and now I am left wondering what they have been sprayed with or if they've had a huge dose of radiation. Angry

Jo That is shocking, I can't believe people would actually do that. :(

Did you cut one open? Any spiders or other beings?

Lovecat · 23/02/2013 15:06

Chickie Nobs

When I used to commute into the city, every morning I'd walk past a house that had a raised bed inside a retaining garden wall. Someone had thrown a half-eaten satsuma in there. I think it was about 3 months before it disappeared - no animal would touch it and it didn't rot. I was tempted to prod it to see if it was plastic, but it had definitely been peeled & part-eaten!
