AIBU?

to think my friend looks silly driving around with her car roof down in February?

Friend bought a new car 6ish months ago, it is her pride and joy. Think constant updates, lots of photos on facebook etc.

Today we were saying what a nice day it was ... clear skies, sun shining - but it was obviously still freezing.

Friend says "yes it was so nice I've been driving around with the roof down"

Hmm

See if I had a that sort of car I would only put the roof down when it was actually hot.

I know she has probably been dying to do this .... but regardless of who it was - if I saw someone driving with their roof down in February I'd be thinking numpty what a complete show off Grin

My MX-5 has brilliant heating with the roof down so it's actually not cold. It's a nice feeling bombing down country roads in the sunshine. I expect the OP would secretly like a convertible too Grin

I think people are jumping to a lot of conclusions about the OP.

She has made a minor criticism of a friend and somehow this makes her mean minded and jealous?
I didn't really pick that up from her post. I agree with Kelly Elly, some serious over reactions on here.

The OP's gorn a bit quiet aint she?

I love it when we have those first dry, and marginally above freezing days - just the remotest hint that spring is coming, - I would absolutely get wrapped up and put the roof down on my car to enjoy it.

If I had a convertible that is,

which I don't.

Having had a car that the roof went down on, I'm with ur mate. Yabu.

Nothing better than driving in sun when cold and heater on. It's fabulous! Also liked driving in rain as if u go fast enough the rain doesn't touch you it just disappears.... Oddly magical although basic science.

If she has an SLK then she will have been toasty-warm. It has blow heaters round the neck/head area to keep driver/passenger cosy.

Not sure about other convertibles but I imagine MB aren't the only ones to have thought of this.

Nothing better than getting roof down and going for a drive on a sunny day to blow the cobwebs off.

We had the roof off yesterday and Monday as the sun was out and the weather was glorious. We have heating in the front but none in the back so one of our first purchases was a couple of driving blankets. Wouldn't have it any other way but a lot of that is due to the design of the car - it's much, much easier to drive without the roof on.

Not gone quiet here, just don't get the time to be logged on to MN all day Smile

I'm not jealous of her at all, it's a very nice car and I'm happy that she gets enjoyment from it. She got it on finance so if I really really wanted to I could too - but I don't.

I just generally find showing off a bi grating ... I was working abroad at the time when she was getting the car and any emails I received from her were updates about the car, loads of photos, it gets mentioned every time I see her.

I don't mind and can be happy for other people, but when you have 8months of it ... it can be a little wearing.

Maybe I'm just not someone to show off, I bought myself an iPad not too long ago and she came round to my house and was shocked to see one - because I don't ever feel the need to tell people what I've bought etc.

I just think it looks a bit silly driving around in the morning when it's frosty and cold (which it was here yesterday) .., thats it.

If that makes me "nasty, nasty, nasty" then .... ok? I would probably reserve saying that about criminals, murderers etc not someone venting privately.

IABU Smile

YANBU but I think driving without roof protection is foolish whatever the weather. Recent episode of Brain Doctors confirmed my prejudices and then there was also 'the accident' in Downton Abbey.

I can see why you are a bit bored of it Op.
But tbh if someone excitedly told me about thir new car and posted pictures of it I would kind of get it.
If someone excitedly told me about their new iPad and posted pictures of it I would back away, never dropping eye contact until at a safe distance.

"I remember someone saying once if you have a convertible the only time the roof should be up is when it's raining!"

yep, that's our philosophy, and fortunately the kids agree!

I'm not saying a new iPad is anywhere near as good as a new car Pagewatch but ... I was making the point that it doesn't even register for me to even want to tell people.

If I had got a new car I would mention that I was getting one and that's it. I doubt I would upload photos of it to Facebook - but that's just me and I know other people want to share and want everyone to know what they have.

And I only live in the UK for a couple of months of the year. I have to work in LA for the rest of the year.

It would be stupid of me to buy a car which would hardly be used.

I say keep things a surprise - look forward to driving past that fb friend who had NO idea you have a new convertible/Reliant Robin/Scooter/roller skates & see them gasp in amazement as you swish by.

Now that's cool.

I think you missed my point a bit.
I wasn't suggesting you buy a car. I am just saying cars are one of those things one people get really excited about
She's just excited. I would put up with it and it wouldn't bother me but if it's bothering you just hide her feed so you only have car status reports when you meet up. Then you can drown her out with talk of your new apps Grin

I don't think you sound jealous, OP. You sound sensible and a bit square. I approve of you and disapprove of your show-off friend (I can't imagine ever taking photos of a car unless they were to prove damage or to sell it!).

I know, I find that more offensive than being called "nasty, nasty, nasty"

I'm not dull or a square because I wouldn't drive around with my car roof down on what I consider to be a nice but still very cold day.

I also wouldn't think "wow that person is living life to the extreme" if they had their car roof down ..

It's compulsory to have the roof down on a convertible if the sun is shining, irrespective of the temperature. Otherwise you look like a wimp.

Nothing better than bouncing about in a convertible on a sunny winter day, coat, hat, scarf, gloves and sunnies on and the heating cranked up to full blast.
