To have been a bit freaked out by tenacious postman this AM?

I live in a block of flats. Our postman buzzed the intercom this morning. I'd was just going into the shower and knew it was him, with a non-urgent parcel (DVD boxset), so decided to ignore the buzzer, assuming he'd leave a card & I could pick up parcel from the delivery office tomorrow.

He then managed to get inside the block and I could hear him asking my neighbour if she knew I was in and her saying 'not sure'. He then knocked on the door, then knocked again. I was stepping out of the shower at this point. He then banged on the door and said 'It's the postman, can you let me in, I know you are at home.'

I called out that it wasn't convenient for me to answer the door and apologised. Postman's response was, 'I know you are in, your car is outside.'.
I repeated that I was not able to open the door right now and asked him to leave the parcel outside the door, which he refused to do.
He then started saying that this was ridiculous, can you just open the door and I can be on my way, so I repeated that I was not in a position to open the door, I had just got out of the shower, could he please leave a card or wait for a few minutes, the answer to which was 'oh, for god's sake'.

AIBU to think that I don't have to answer the door to take a delivery if I don't want to? And that delivery people might consider that women at home on their own, may not want to open the door to strangers when they're only half-dressed?

Yabu, could you not put on a dressing gown and open the door for two seconds?

'I know you are in, your car is outside' Shock Holy shit that is creepy.

I would be considering putting in a complaint if I were you.

YANBU, but I'd have opened the door in the buff and given him a heart attack (only joking! Grin)

BreconBeBuggered · 14/02/2013 14:05

Why didn't he just give the parcel to your neighbour? Or just leave it outside your door (which is what mine does, even when I'm in). Bit weird.

OhMyNoReally · 14/02/2013 14:06

Yabu, I answered the door this morning after being in the shower. I had a dressing gown on. Poor lad at the door was trying to deliver flowers, they had the wrong address on, so the parcel wasn't even for me.

They must see hundreds of people in pjs, dressing gowns or worse.

Montybojangles · 14/02/2013 14:06

Perhaps he was worried it was a valentines gift? Never the less, sounds a bit bizarre and extreme! He clearly takes his job very seriously.

SkinnybitchWannabe · 14/02/2013 14:06

Yabu. Ive been caught out by this before and just grabbed whatever item of clothing was nearest do I could answer the door. He was only attempting to do his job.

fromparistoberlin · 14/02/2013 14:06

maybe he though it was a valentines gift????

still, creepy

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 14/02/2013 14:07

he's not a stranger, he's your postman. they're under SO much pressure at work to get things delivered first time, poor buggers. no doubt that he didn't behave well but think hard before putting a complaint in.

Cortana · 14/02/2013 14:07

OP did ask Rhi and the postman refused.

I don't think YABU, ok the postman may not have wanted to carry the package all the way back and yes their job is hard, but I wouldn't have wanted to open the door half dressed for a package I was happy to pick up later. That's your prerogative.

Justforlaughs · 14/02/2013 14:07

Rhiannon86
which bit of "I repeated that I was not able to open the door right now and asked him to leave the parcel outside the door, which he refused to do. " did you not read? Grin

erowid · 14/02/2013 14:09

His perseverance was a little unnecessary but I would have just put on a dressing gown and opened the door.

HappyJustToBe · 14/02/2013 14:09

YANBU. You don't have to answer your door if you don't want to even if it would have been easier perhaps to do so. It doesn't really matter if other people would answer the door in various states of undress.

Cluffyfunt · 14/02/2013 14:09

He was being odd but why not grab a towl and open the door ? Confused

You had neighbours in so could have screamed if he tried anything.

Cluffyfunt · 14/02/2013 14:12

I've opened the door without putting a boob away ( bfing of course!) and I don't think my postey even noticed Shock Grin

firawla · 14/02/2013 14:12

couldnt you just open the door a bit and shove your arm round the door to take the parcel, presuming you dont need to sign for it? i do this when i want to get parcels and dont have headscarf on
although he should have just left it outside the front door knowing your in and can get it in a min once your ready

hellsbellsmelons · 14/02/2013 14:14

I think I feel quite sorry for him.
He probably thought is was a lovely valentine gift for you.
It's extra work and paperwork if he can't deliver.
It may be that he needed a signature and couldn't leave it outside your door.
He was a bit persistent but then again, you don't know what kind of pressure he is under to get deliveries made.
Why couldn't you just have opened the door in a dressing gown or towel?

mrsstewpot · 14/02/2013 14:18

Maybe he was a Valentine kissogram?

WandaDoff · 14/02/2013 14:18

I'm with Aitch on this one, the poor sod will be getting shit at work if he doesn't meet his targets.

I would have thought that Valentines day is one of their busiest days anyway & your parcel will most probably be one many that he probably doesn't want to lug about with him if he doesn't need to.

He probably shouldn't have been so snippy with you but you would be well out of order to report him.

WandaDoff · 14/02/2013 14:19

too many probablys

TurquoiseCat · 14/02/2013 14:19

YANBU. Since when do you HAVE to open your own front door to anybody who is standing on the doorstep?

maddening · 14/02/2013 14:21

yabu a little bit- takes a second to open the door and a dressing gown covers more than lots of people wear in he street - and I wonder if they have targets for not returning mail to the sorting office? Possibly to combat the don't take the parcel and leave a card without knocking brigade?

yanbu to feel he was overly keen - he sounds like a postman at the end of his tether (although possibly he had sn? As it does sound out of the spectrum of normal unless he was someone not hitting targets and stressed about his job?)

MrsKeithRichards · 14/02/2013 14:23

You sound odd. You answer the door. You knew it was the post so why you being an awkward weirdo?
