To wonder why the G Live venue is still open this week?

Two men, the Tour Manager and one of the singers from Fishermens Friends, died from injuries caused by a four and a half tonne metal door falling on them.
Wouldn't it be usual for the investigation into this tragedy to take precedence over the continued operations of the venue?
There must have been a catastrophic system failure for this to happen. Given it is a relatively new venue, how can the management conclude that it is safe for other shows to be put on? Would the HSE not have the power to suspend operations?

was the door part of the venue building or one on a lorry?

NewGirlInTown · 12/02/2013 19:26

I understand it was the load in door of the building.

Unless the venue is owned by the Council, it will be Local Authority who investigate not HSE. How ever as this is a fatal accident the police would be leading the investigation until they can rule out murder or manslaughter. All the evidence would have been collected pretty quickly. I assume that the door will have been removed and so the building would be safe - there is no need to stop the normal operations. I'm an ex-inspector - so this is just my experience.

I am so sorry for the family and friends of the two people who died - what a truly horrible accident. It must be very hard for anyone involved to return to daily life. My thoughts are with them.

I went to a kids class at g live today.

Why should it be closed? Tragic accident, but it was part of the set of the act performing the collapsed as they were unloading it.
Nothing at all to do with the venue.

NewGirlInTown · 12/02/2013 19:34

Thank you for your very informed reply. I knew one of the deceased and was shocked to my core to think of others being put at risk so soon after the tragedy.

Such a horrible thing to happen.

NewGirlInTown · 12/02/2013 19:36

Ceramic it categorically was not part of the set, but part of the fabric of the building.
Glad your kids class went ahead and was not inconvenienced by the deaths.

Hmmm that's strange, people working there told me that was the case. The loading bay is still all fenced off though.

NewGirlInTown · 12/02/2013 19:49

The band show was just seven guys with microphones, a few flags and no set to speak of. I imagine all sorts of rumours are going on after such an incident. Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.

Quite often the people that work there won't know all the circumstances - it does turn into chinese whispers and the police/hse/council won't explain exactly what has happened until the investigation has progressed, they won't want to confuse any further statements that will be needed.

If it's fenced off - likely that further work or repair needed.

Fishermen Friends are DSs favourite band - he saw the story on the news and is really upset. Sad

ceramicunicorn · 12/02/2013 19:56

Sorry didn't mean my original response to sound harsh.
The staff at the venue are very clearly blaming it on the fisherman's friends guys though. Everyone was asking about it today and that's what the staff were telling people. I just assumed that was the case.

grobagsforever · 12/02/2013 20:08

Yikes, meant to be going there tomorrow, hadn't heard about this Sad

NewGirlInTown · 12/02/2013 20:20

Ceramic that is really interesting. Feel for customer facing staff who are probably just quoting the party line.
I was just saddened to see 'business as usual' when such a life changing accident has taken place.

Love your name Loler if you're an ex H&S person :)

5madthings · 12/02/2013 20:24

Very sad, I saw them at cornbury festival a few years ago, they are very good.

loler · 12/02/2013 20:29

The staff should have been provided with a better party line! Something along the lines of 'we're not sure what happened, they are still investigating it'. They don't know who they could be speaking to.

Pseudo - you're the first person to have ever got the connection - did consider elsi too!

ceramicunicorn · 12/02/2013 20:32

That's why I assumed it was true! I thought that they wouldn't be telling us it was nothing to do with the venue unless it was definitely the case. A bit worrying as there are classes and shows still going on and everyone's being told it's safe.

loler · 12/02/2013 20:35

It will definitely be safe now.

PseudoBadger · 12/02/2013 20:35

Well it takes a certain niche of knowledge :o None of them trip off the tongue as well as Loler - except maybe Puwer!
