things have been super tight recently financially so hardly any treats or going out. taking ds to soft play today with his cousins but didn't tell him as thought would be a nice suprise when we got there. he went out to my grandparents yesterday and theyd told him, they knew he ddidn't know. I'm irrationally annoyed because I'm super skint at the minute and this was a nice treat I wanted to suprise him with.

No yanbu. It's annoying. DH bought a Pink Panther for DD as a surprise at Xmas and couldn't wait to see her face. As she started opening it FIL pipes up 'that looks like Pink Panther!'. DH was miffed. Sounds trivial I know but it's lovely to see their reaction to a surprise.

Course not Grin miffed seems reasonable to me. They should understand that you're struggling and wanted to surprise him. Just don't tell them next time.
the free museum and art gallery near me both have quite big play areas that I use a lot when I'm skint and ds needs a rampage, I know it's not quite as exciting for him as soft play but have you checked if there's anything similar near you?

Numberlock · 10/02/2013 08:43

Did you specifically say to them 'Please don't mention the soft play trip'?

likesnowflakesinanocean · 10/02/2013 08:43

oh no that is annoying hope she liked her pink panther regardlessSmile pink panther was fab is he still around. I live in the arse end of nowhere and don't drive so soft play and library are pretty much only things close. I know they didn't do it out of spite but he came home very matter of fact saying oh I know where we are going. he's still happy to be going but its not the same :/ have ordered something fun with amazon vouchers from surveys so am guardin that with my life so can't ruin it!

Hope you and your son had a lovely day, OP.

HoratiaWinwood · 10/02/2013 16:39

That would have annoyed me too, OP. I am very explicit with people nowadays. That or not telling them any more information than I've given the DCs.

we had a good time yes, he seemed happy enough anyway. soft play was hugely busy, but i ignored all the odd looks from other parents and climbed around with the boys going down the slide and generally acting like a five year old :)

Grin its the best, all the serious types that were drinking coffee and doing very important lap top work looked most bemused by my having funGrin
