I call my mum to arrange for her to meet my boyfriend like she's been asking for:

me - "hi it's me"
mum - "Oh hi, wait a minute, what did you say Laura? (sister) oh yes I know! sorry Rotten, how are you?"
me - I'm not too bad, just wondering if you wanted to go for dinner in parks arms on Friday night with me and Mr Rotten?"
mum - "hold on, what was that Laura? ha! Laura has just dropped her cake!"
me - "right, so about Friday night?"
mum - "what? are you going out Friday night?"
me - "do you want to go for dinner with me and mr rotten??"
mum - "oh, Friday night? is that when they do the carvery?"
me - "dunno, it's more about you meeting mrRotten though - just a quick bite to eat I thought ... "
mum - "hold on, Laura, do Parks arms so carvery on Friday night? ....... hmmm .... erm .... I'm not sure if they do you know .... "
me - "yeah but whatever, they'll serve some kind of food won't they! so do you want to go?"
mum - "oh that reminds me, Jeff wants to try that Chinese place, the new one, have you heard of it?"
me "nope, but about Friday night? you coming or not?"
mum "oh yes, that might be nice, do they do the carvery though? I'm not sure if they do?"

JESUS H FUCKING CHRIST.

Oh yes, I feel your pain. My mum is like this. She calls me and then has chats with my idiot DB - who lives at home and doesn't work so she's had all feckin day to talk to him.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 06/02/2013 14:04

And when you get there, she will say "D'you know, I don't like the look of I think I'll just have, um, erm, do you think they could do me a little Go and ask them Dear"
Grin

Thats not frustrating. Twice a week I phone my mum who has lost all the words for things, people, and places, and now has significant memory impairment so she repeats the story of 'umm, my friend with the bad, umm, we had a lovely time in that place with the, the, pretty coloured, ummm' twice in 10 minutes, and you have to work out what the hell she is on about, and find things to say to her that she understands and retains something positive and not just a sense of confusion.

Dear god that would drive me insane!

Nancy66 · 06/02/2013 14:08

ha ha ha ...that could be my mum too - but the conversation would be followed with a 40 minute blow by blow update on her neighbour Margaret's forthcoming knee operation.

StanleyLambchop · 06/02/2013 14:10

CMOT My poor Mum is like that too, we talk of " you-know-the -thingamy-bob, just like a you-know-you -used -to -have- one-sort -of-thing." It would be hilarious if it were not so fucking sad. Sad

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/02/2013 14:11

CMOT :( sorry, that was a horrid x-post.

Yakshemash · 06/02/2013 14:13

My mother has still got all her marbles (just) but she will NOT listen. So the effect is the same.

CMOTDibbler · 06/02/2013 14:17

I know Stanley - when she could talk round the missing words it was OKish as you had a good chance of guessing what was going on, and she was understanding what you said so you could work it out. Now it just sucks. No conversation at all, and she gives up after a couple of minutes.

No worries Alibaba.

LadyBeagleEyes · 06/02/2013 14:19

Sounds like my late Mum too.
I used to get so impatient with her, it was usually long conversations that started with 'I know you don't watch the soaps but...', followed by a long explanation about who did what in Emmerdale Smile.
I miss it now, and wish I could turn the clock back, when the phone went during the day it was usually her, and I still have that fleeting moment thinking it's her. Sad
