Just a quick poll really please, exp has never passed a driving test he had some lessons around 8 years ago but none since. His gf bought a car and so he drives it with her in the passenger seat and i assume they have L plates but dont know. The kids say not. Now ive asked him to please not drive the kids about untill he has passed his test. I dont think iabu?

He has driven them every week unknown to me even in the snow the other week. My concern is hes not actually having lessons to go with this driving hes doing. He is coming to pick them up in a couple of hours and i want to bring it up but i know he will cut me dead etc (he is a EA twat if that makes a different with a massive god complex)

Learners cant drive on motorways. I didn't drive on a motorway until almost a year after passing my test as I just didnt feel confident.

monstermissy · 03/02/2013 12:42

No ds1 dosent think they were on the motorway, ill have to ask him. They must of gone a long way home then... There are def deeper issues which is why I do try to pick my battles and it would seem him driving is not one to pick. (Assuming he's not on motorway)

Thanks for the input everyone. I will come back next time I need opinions :)

Op you don't need to take your exP word for it about the insurance, thare is absolutely nothing wrong with asking the police (non emergency number) to check that the vehicle is insured for him to drive - take a note of the licence plate and give their names - it will take them about 30 seconds to find out, just say you are concerned that it may be uninsured. Btw, the police did this to me at the scene of a breakdown on a busy road last year, put the car details into the commuter and it look 30 seconds to get the info that the car belonged to dh, I was insured to drive it and it had an mot, so I think they run these checks pretty much at the drop of a hat anyway.

5madthings · 03/02/2013 15:49

If he has l plates, an up to date provisional (mine has recently expired so they do need renewing) and insurance etc then its totally legal.

I can understand your concerns and it may be worth checking re insurance.

andubelievedthat · 03/02/2013 16:35

Insurance comp".s pay into a fund to cover claims specific to uninsured drivers and the carnage they cause, seriously hope you or for that matter anyone has to call on their funds.>going by what you said re his attitude ,what is ,do you think the likely outcome should he realise you called the police on him /his girlfriend?(mellow?) observation, you have posters on here claiming to have a full licence yet wil not drive on routes they consider difficult? so much for the driving test then .

KobayashiMaru I'd have to disagree with you a bit there. I'm sure you are capable of driving and controlling a car (as am I). I am a learner and drive with dp and the dc's in the car, but they are not just as safe like that than if anyone else is driving.
They are safer if dp is driving because he is more aware of what is happening around him than I am.
An experienced driver is less likely to have an accident than us learners.

FastidiaBlueberry · 03/02/2013 17:35

Yeah, sorry but driving by yourself without the emotional crutch of a more experienced driver than you, does teach you some more driving skills (I don't know why, it just does)

I suppose you could be just as good a driver if you had been driving around alone in your car without taking your test, as learner drivers were allowed to do in Ireland until quite recently; but in the UK, you would have been breaking the law.

montage · 03/02/2013 20:37

That was an insane provision in Irish law - right up to 2007 you could drive without any supervision if you were on your second provisional license. (You could be on your second provisional without ever driving a car before).

Back in the early 90's there was an even dafter brief initiative where people who had renewed their provisionals a couple of times were given a full license. Some of them had never driven. It was an initiative to cut down the waiting lists for a test Hmm

Now we thankfully have better laws and recently it has become compulsory for learners to have formal lessons before sitting their test (driving instructors must be delighted).

Perhaps a good solution would be to stipulate that a number of lessons must be taken before driving passengers?

KobayashiMaru · 03/02/2013 22:20

I was hardly a learner after several years of driving. I just hadn't actually passed a test. I was no less safe than my dp who had passed a test but was driving less time than me.
