Think I might possibly have too many bottle of perfume, yet went into The Fragrance Shop today and had a look through their sale box. never been in there before but saw a bottle of one of my favourite scents (Michael kors) and bought it. Now have 20 bottles. Is that a normalish amount?

No way is skiing a waste of money, particularly when you are elegantly swooping down the piste leaving an aura of duty free perfume wafting behind your.

YouOldSlag · 05/02/2013 11:25

Hint- I was just making the point that perfume is not a waste of time to those who are interested. Skiing would be a waste of time to me as I loathe it, but if it is your passion, then clearly it's money well spent.

Perfume would be a waste of time on expat who doesn't like it. That doesn't make it pointless to others.

Of course you are right YouOS, and I was very interested in your social history comments. Serious googing session coming up in search of more similar info.

20 bottles WoW !

I am old school and only have one on the go at any one time. I kind of assume that they will go off.

Remotecontrolduck · 05/02/2013 12:17

Is it true that the Lidl perfume smells just like Chanel Mademoiselle? That's my all time favourite but it's SO expensive...

Please say it does. I will literally be falling over myself to get to Lidl!

YouOldSlag · 05/02/2013 12:22

I think it is 80% true. I actually did a test for this. I wore Suddenly Madame Glamour on one hand and Coco on the other all day. Coco had more resonance, but the notes were the same.

If anything, it was like the difference between an eau de toilette and an eau de parfum, but yes they did smell very very similar indeed.

fridgepants- your poor Mum longing for a bottle and getting disappointed! You sound nice.

OnwardBound · 06/02/2013 15:22

YouOldSlag - are you able to tell us the name of your blog?

The social history re perfume sounds fascinating.

But I also think it is such a lovely feminine thing wearing perfume. And women talking about and enjoying perfume.

It is just like the love of fine wine, or beautiful flowers or opera.

Not an essential need perhaps but definitely not just frivolity either.

It is a complement to the well rounded life!

YouOldSlag · 06/02/2013 16:12

I'm not sure if I am allowed. I'll PM you though!

YouOldSlag · 06/02/2013 16:16

Onwardbound- yes I find it really interesting too. It was especially interesting trying Guerlain's Jicky recently- it was created in 1889 and although it has been reformulated, it was interesting to have a hint of what smells were fashionable then.

I remember my Mum wearing Anais Anais when I was growing up, and my grandmother always wearing L'Aimant. Olfactory memoires are so powerful!

Saski · 06/02/2013 20:44

In duty free today, I sampled: Chanel Mademoiselle (thank you Remotecontrolduck) and Gucci Guilty Extreme or whatever. I love both.

OnwardBound · 11/02/2013 11:50

I love the perfume Patchouli Antique by the French jewellery brand Les Nereides.

It smells antique like the name, in a good way!

I imagine that Patchouli may have been worn in times past. I think it was also popular in the 60s?

Do you know anything about this YouOldSlag?

Otherwise I love Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Gentiana but they have discontinued it Sad. It reminds me of a lovely holiday I had in Florence. I bought it in duty free when travelling there.

YouOldSlag · 11/02/2013 12:50

I haven't heard of that one, but I do like patchouli in fragrances.

If you want to know anything about perfume, the real experts are on this thread.

I have learned an encyclopaedic amount! Listen especially to anything ProFumo says or, in the earlier two threads, listen to Dona Ana. What she doesn't know isn't worth knowing and she is really helpful at answering questions. She makes me look like an amateur!

It started as The Worst perfume thread and we are now on our third episode!

Personally I never think perfume is waste of money. If you don't like it you can resell it and if you do like it, there are people on eBay who collect the empty bottles and will buy them off you. It makes me really happy to choose my perfume every day, the one moment I have that is all about me as a woman, and not about DH and the kids.
