Think I might possibly have too many bottle of perfume, yet went into The Fragrance Shop today and had a look through their sale box. never been in there before but saw a bottle of one of my favourite scents (Michael kors) and bought it. Now have 20 bottles. Is that a normalish amount?

You're only advised to keep perfume for up to a year. So unless you actually bathe in the stuff; a lot of it will be well past it's prime by the time you get to wear it.

Lovetomoan it is called Suddenly

Saski · 04/02/2013 13:53

I wore Chanel Allure for a while. Very nice.

YANBU.

I have 23 bottles. I write a perfume blog. When I go off a perfume I sell it on ebay. When I want to try a perfume I buy a used bottle on ebay.

In fact, if you have unwanted perfume, ebay is the place to sell it. There are avid collectors on there and I often buy something, dislike it and sell it on for the same or even more than what I paid for it.

23 bottles may sound like a lot but I have two pairs of shoes and only one handbag. Perfume is my thing and I very rarely spend more than a tenner on a bottle. if I want something expensive, I wait for Christmas and birthdays.

Saski · 04/02/2013 15:40

^^ I buy all my perfume used on Ebay. In fact, this must be a pretty common practice because the discount is not as much as you might expect.

expatinscotland · 04/02/2013 16:52

I'd never buy perfume on Ebay. A lot of it is fake/counterfeit.

WowOoo · 04/02/2013 16:54

YANBU.
I have 3 so you can have my allowance also.
Someone has to keep Michael Kors in business, don't they? Smile

YouOldSlag · 04/02/2013 17:18

expat- no its not- I've been doing it for a year and not one dud.

YouOldSlag · 04/02/2013 17:20

not necessarily. A lot of perfumistas buy vintage perfumes as they prefer certain formulations. If you keep them in a cool dark place they can last years.

YouOldSlag · 04/02/2013 17:22

The Lidl one smells almost exactly like Chanel Coco Madamoiselle. I wore each one on my left arm and one on my right arm all day. The Chanel had a bit more resonance, but otherwise they were very similar.

Saski · 04/02/2013 17:53

Most fakes on Ebay are not used. They're new. This is my top tip for avoiding fakes on Ebay, in fact.

Saski · 04/02/2013 17:54

YouOldSlag - a perfume blog? Fantastic! What's your favorite perfume?

YouOldSlag · 04/02/2013 18:00

Thank you Saski! I have two favourites: Chanel Cristalle and Eau de Cartier.

But I like loads more. I have favourites for winter, favourites for evening, favourites for just round the house...

If I had to choose one it would be Eau de Cartier.

Saski · 04/02/2013 18:22

Ah hah! I wore Cristalle and Allure in my youth.

Must smell Eau de Cartier.
I recently started wearing JM Pomegranate Noir, which I love.

wiltingfast · 04/02/2013 21:18

Really! I've been toying with buying eau de cartier! Bit worried I might find it a little sweet. I must see if I could get a cheap bottle on ebay to try out. Thanks for the tip Biscuit

Yfronts · 04/02/2013 22:31

not normal but as long as it isn't at the cost of other more important things I can't see a problem.

BellaVita · 04/02/2013 22:33

I have about 7 - all in use apart from one.

mumofapirate · 04/02/2013 22:37

I have none Blush only because I cant afford any Blush Blush Blush

YouOldSlag · 04/02/2013 23:11

Oh mumofapirate. Poor you. I only have one expensive one. If you have a birthday coming up, there are loads you can get for under a tenner.

wiltingfast- blag a free sample at House of Fraser or The Perfume Shop. I got a 2ml spray last October and finally got a bottle for Christmas off DH. I could swim in it, it's gorgeous.

expatinscotland · 04/02/2013 23:59

It's a waste of money, mum.

YouOldSlag · 05/02/2013 07:57

I disagree ex pat. It gives me enormous pleasure and it's a really fascinating subject which covers social history, changing tastes and fashions... did you know for example that early 20th century perfumes were created to complement the smell of smoking when it first became fashionable for women to smoke? I love that 80s perfumes were loud and mad like the fashions and then it all calmed down in the 90s, and this was reflected in the way perfumes changed too.

It might be a waste of your money ex pat if it isn't something that interests you- in the same way I think skiing is a waste of money! Smile

expatinscotland · 05/02/2013 08:35

Most modern perfumes are full of synthetic chemicals that are bad for your lungs and the environment.

Skiing is definitely a waste of money.

mumofapirate · 05/02/2013 09:36

I could afford cheaper ones but they dont smell like angel, romance etc I got some when boots had a glitch last year but I must be a bit spray happy because they dont last long!

Ashoething · 05/02/2013 10:09

I too love perfume and frequent a lot of perfume blogs. I have about 10 on the go at the minute. I got 2 gift sets for xmas, treated myself to one and I am currently eyeing up another bargain in the perfume shop!

But I wear perfume everyday and like other posters I have summer/winter perfumes.

YouOldSlag · 05/02/2013 11:16

expat- we'll have to beg to differ on the perfume but agree on the skiing!
