I hate tattoos. Whilst I appreciate everyone has a right to their own taste and choices I still cannot get over the fact that people have them in places where they are visible.

A colleague of mine has just returned to work after M leave with a horrific tattoo from her wrist to her elbow. How can she go out and meet clients looking like that?? It can be seen through tops and obviously below short sleeved tops.

What I really don't like is seeing lovely brides on their wedding days, strapless dresses and tattoos on their upper arms and backs..... urgh!!!!!!

Anyone else with me??

Why do you care though? I am an interior designer and I have one. Unless you ask every professional person to strip off how do you know? Why would you think a professional person couldn't do their job just because of a personal 'fashion' statement. Would you discount an amazing doctor if he suddenly rolled up his sleeves to reveal a dragon I think not.

AKissIsNotAContract · 28/01/2013 13:13

I did up there hintofbream ^^

I'm a dentist (not that it matters in the slightest)

Andro · 28/01/2013 13:13

I think the judgey in the workplace vibe is a myth. I know 2 consultants and our last solicitor for a house purchase who have them.

Unfortunately it became very apparent that visible tattoos had a detrimental impact on how a person was perceived where I work, the difference in how inked members of staff were treated by outside visitors was so clear it was embarrassing to witness.

mirry2 · 28/01/2013 13:13

The op is entitled to her opinion just as everyone else is. I don't like tattoos either. I think they're hideous.

WoTmania · 28/01/2013 13:14

YABU - the 'especially women' bit in paticular. You don't like them, they do. It's their body. They might not like your hair colour/cut/dress sense...

Ghostsgowoooh · 28/01/2013 13:14

yabu

I dont have tattoos to offend people like you. I have them because they make me feel better about my vitiligo, I have colour on my skin for one and it makes me smile when I see them

Andro · 28/01/2013 13:14

^^ I'm talking about easily visible ink (uncovered arms, hands, neck etc).

ditavonteesed · 28/01/2013 13:15

so you can come on here and state that you judge people in quite an unpleasent way, that people are not proffessional and have a lack of in sight, but people cant say anything back to you. I havent read the comments that have been deleted but I can imagine what they say.
I have 6 tattoo's and most of them are visible if I choose them to be, so i would cover them up when I worked in a bank, now i work for the nhs and I cant cover tham up as my hair has to be tied up and I have to be bare below the elbow, you know what though, the nhs cares more about infection control and hygene than what i have chosen to do to my body. Now thats progressive. Also now I know the NHS is ok with it I am going to get the biggest fuck off sleeve done. You can judge me all you like but I prefer to judge people on their personality and acheivements not what they look like. I just find it leads to a more suistainable image of others.

badtasteflump · 28/01/2013 13:16

Actually I hate tattoos - and can't help (secretly) judging people I see with them. I wouldn't say anything to them in RL though - I would be too scared to that type of person getting violent Grin Wink

noddyholder · 28/01/2013 13:17

Smile Dita What is wrong with people? It is so far down my list when I am working out how I feel about people I meet in a professional capacity. And for those that do give it consideration God help us!

WhoeverHeardOfAWormskinRug · 28/01/2013 13:23

Sorry, apologies OP and please let me re-phrase what I said, as it was not intended or aimed at anyone in particular.

People. Not you specifically OP, not you AT ALL. But people, in general, who pass judgement on others should just fuck off.

and seeing as the following, posted by others were not deleted:

OP being called an "idiot" at 9.18am
"fuck" at 9.21am in two posts.
"fuck" again at 9.26am
"fuck" at 9.27am
and a "cunt" at 9.29am

I will be absolutely astounded if my comment, which is not aimed at anyone in particular, is deleted.

scarletforya · 28/01/2013 13:24

If you have a corporate job selling to FM companies and fairly high brow clients I do not think it's professional looking to have tattoos showing. I think in general women have more chance to dress in a way where their tattoos are "on show"

I wouldn't think of people in a Corporate setting as 'high brow'. High brow usually refers to Academics/Artists/Musicians/Theologians/Authors etc.

Also (this might be shocking to you) maybe she doesn't give a shite about her executive job and is not planning on staying there for the rest of her life. Maybe it just pays the bills for now!

EarnestDullard · 28/01/2013 13:26

KatyTheCleaningLady do you not think you're contradicting yourself by saying "I think that it's silly to dictate appearance" and saying "Either be totally committed to looking like an alternative person - be inked all over - or not".

I have two "silly" Hmm little tattoos. They're not a statement, I didn't get them to make myself stand out or feel unique, I got them because I like them. And I couldn't care less if anyone else has tattoos or doesn't have tattoos. Do what makes you happy.

Also? .

HintofBream · 28/01/2013 13:32

so you can come on here and state that you judge people in quite an unpleasent way, that people are not proffessional and have a lack of in sight, but people cant say anything back to you.

Plenty of people have had lots to say to the OP.

Pleased for you that the NHS is not judgey about tattoos; nor about grammar and spelling seemingly.

DeDevilTail · 28/01/2013 13:32

I have a friend who's a tattoo artist. He is often asked to do private work for very high profile people who do not wish to or cannot visit his studio. He accommodates them outside of normal hours. Think judges/high ranking police etc.

I think the OP would be surprised at the 'high brow' professional people she had encountered who are harbouring a bit of ink under their clothes.

ditavonteesed · 28/01/2013 13:34

earnest that is brilliant.
I also have a couple of 'little silly' tattoo's they mean a lot to me, they bring back memories and can make me feel strong about myself, I also have one that I dont like at all, wouldnt change it for the world though, it is who I was at that time, life is a journey and of course tastes change but we shouldnt forget the person we were at that time and the values we held, for some people tattoos are a way of doing that.

ditavonteesed · 28/01/2013 13:35

'Pleased for you that the NHS is not judgey about tattoos; nor about grammar and spelling seemingly. ' ah thanks for that

Lexiesinclair · 28/01/2013 13:36

KatytheCleaningLady to be honest I would have judged the guy covered in England tattoos too. But surely you weren't judging him for having tattoos, but rather the statement he was making with them, which is different IMO.

noddyholder · 28/01/2013 13:36

Hintofbream nasty comment and much more indicative of what sort of person you are than any tattoo could ever be.

TheOneWithTheHair · 28/01/2013 13:38

Earnest I'm going to have that stuck in my head all day now! Catchy.

McKayz · 28/01/2013 13:50

I've had £1 for every 'I don't like tattoos' thread since I joined MN is have enough for my new tattoo Grin

theplodder · 28/01/2013 13:50

Tattoos look awful on women. Low class and trampy.

McKayz · 28/01/2013 13:51

If I had. Not I've had.

LimburgseVlaai · 28/01/2013 13:52

If you judge someone's ability to do a job by whether they have tattoos, you are no better than a person who thinks black/Asian/gay/female people cannot or should not do certain jobs.

Personally, I don't particularly like tattoos and I would never get one myself - but I would not withhold a job offer from a suitable candidate just because they have a tattoo, no matter whether that job is client-facing or not.

BarredfromhavingStella · 28/01/2013 13:53

Ahhhhh, so glad the spelling & grammar police are in residence Hmm
