I hate tattoos. Whilst I appreciate everyone has a right to their own taste and choices I still cannot get over the fact that people have them in places where they are visible.

A colleague of mine has just returned to work after M leave with a horrific tattoo from her wrist to her elbow. How can she go out and meet clients looking like that?? It can be seen through tops and obviously below short sleeved tops.

What I really don't like is seeing lovely brides on their wedding days, strapless dresses and tattoos on their upper arms and backs..... urgh!!!!!!

Anyone else with me??

I'm not keen on them but each to their own. I used to think that tattooed people were not very bright, however I've recently made friends with some tattooed ladies who have made me realise how wrong I was.

Fakebook · 28/01/2013 11:13

I hate tattoos regardless of them being on men or women. I also hate facial piercings like eyebrow or nose rings. I used to study with a girl who had her tongue pierced and she couldn't talk properly. Absolutely revolting.

IWasTheBadOne · 28/01/2013 11:15

I find it really irritating that non-tattooed people (blank canvasses, as it were) think that we get tattoos to be "edgy" or "alternative". Personally, I think most people who get tattooed do so without thinking about what other people think of them.

I spent most of my twenties worrying what others thought of me, and wasted so much time and potential. Got my first tattoo when I was 26, then the second and third in my late thirties, after realizing that I wanted them and it really didn't matter what other people thought. Am now 38 and planning a fourth one, on my shoulder. And I know it will get wrinkly there one day, but that doesn't matter to me because it will still be a part of me, which is the reason I wanted tattoos in the first place.

Badvoc · 28/01/2013 11:16

I think they look awful on both sexes tbh.

FlouncingMintyy · 28/01/2013 11:22

"You are unreasonable for making moral assumptions about another person's behaviour/ attitude based on a minor difference in their appearance."

Eggrules
But op has not made any "moral assumptions". She just doesn't like the way they look. Or am I missing something?

KatyTheCleaningLady · 28/01/2013 11:41

Yesterday I was behind a guy at the post office who had his head shaved, and had the English flag tattooed on the back of his head with the word "ENGLAND" in that sort of gothic script. He also had more stuff written on his arms and hands but I didn't get a good enough look to read them.

I sort of made a moral judgement about him. Although I know I can't be certain, he looks like a racist skinhead. I'd assume that that is what he is and I do judge people like that morally.

I don't think doodling on oneself with "tasteful" little hummingbirds on the ankle and "tribal" tramp stamps is a moral issue at all. I'm sure they're perfectly nice people. I just think their tattoos are stupid.

FryOneFatManic · 28/01/2013 12:08

I have tattoos, 3 done in my 20s and the last one done last year for my birthday. I'm 44.

They are in places that no-one will normally see, even in summer (except when I'm swimming), and they are personal to me.

I don't judge others for what they do (or don't) and OP, just because you (and others) don't like them, it doesn't mean I don't understand your viewpoint, I just don't agree.

DP has them too, and wants another, specifically a castle to fit in with other stuff. But he hasn't found the right castle so until he does, he isn't going to rush out and get any old castle done.

perceptionreality · 28/01/2013 12:10

YABU - why should you care if other people want tattoos? I would never have a tattoo myself but it's a personal thing and I can see that other people like them for themselves - fair enough.

noddyholder · 28/01/2013 12:15

I am not over keen tbh apart from single ones on young skin (I know). And I have one but had it done in thailand about 30 years ago under the influence of something I smoked in a bong so have an excuse. They can look rough if badly done. But each to their own really.

chocoluvva · 28/01/2013 12:32

I feel slightly scared by the sight of someone with a lot of visible tattoos.

Andro · 28/01/2013 12:33

Some tattoos are shockingly bad - there is no escaping that.

Some tattoos are artistically brilliant - I'd love to take some of the images off of skin, put them on canvas and frame them for display.

People make their own choices (their prerogative), but where tattoo's can cause issues is in a professional environment - appearances count in representative/public facing roles and people DO judge (rightly or wrongly).

StuntGirl · 28/01/2013 12:40

Hahahaha.

YABU. Obv.

AKissIsNotAContract · 28/01/2013 12:40

I love this pic of an older couple with tattoos.

AKissIsNotAContract · 28/01/2013 12:42

And also this tattoo on a breast cancer survivor I don't know how anyone can look at that and think it's ugly.

pixi2 · 28/01/2013 12:43

I love tattoos. YABVVU. My best friend gets more beautiful with each one. She is working towards full sleeves and most of her body. Each tattoo means something to her. She is also very bright, non judgemental and is the first to get the coffee on or open the wine when one of us is having ishoos.

Stop being judgemental.

StuntGirl · 28/01/2013 12:45

Oh akiss - that quote underneath the old couple is exactly how I feel about tattoos!

noddyholder · 28/01/2013 12:45

I think the judgey in the workplace vibe is a myth. I know 2 consultants and our last solicitor for a house purchase who have them.

chocoluvva · 28/01/2013 12:47

You know how there are certain looks/styles of home decor etc that you don't particularly like but you can see why other people do? You understand how they appeal to other people but wouldn't choose it for yourself and you can see why some people don't particularly like a style you like? eg businesslike/sharp, very feminine/ditsy/funky/tribal etc

Tattoos and piercing though - I personally don't understand the appeal.

I'm on the fence with this. Some look nice, some don't. I don't like names tattooed on people, for example but as Katythecleaninglady said, I do love tattoos on people who have chosen a so called alternative lifestyle and their body art reflects it.

However, I do judge people who pierce their ears with a device that causes big holes to appear in their lobes. I just think "why???"

HanneHolm · 28/01/2013 12:58

You are in Brighton though nod.

EggRules · 28/01/2013 13:00

The OP is making moral judgment about how they think a person is unprofessional (especially a woman), based solely on the fact they have a tattoo. I don't think a visible tattoo has any bearing on how professional you are; how good you are at your job; your work ethic; etc.

dontsqueezetheteabag · 28/01/2013 13:02

Whoever you have also been reported for vulgar language

OP posts:
noddyholder · 28/01/2013 13:04

Yes but both docs not from Brighton. It really means nothing about the person and their ability to do a particular job. I have no probs with people not liking them for aesthetic reasons but the character doubting is seriously narrow minded. One of these doctors saved my life though so am biased!!

HintofBream · 28/01/2013 13:09

Noddy's consultants and solicitor are still in the minority amongst professional persons. It would be interesting if those posting in defence of their own tattoos specified what their job is, or was. (And I won't believe twenty posters claiming to be brain surgeons Smile)
