I hate tattoos. Whilst I appreciate everyone has a right to their own taste and choices I still cannot get over the fact that people have them in places where they are visible.

A colleague of mine has just returned to work after M leave with a horrific tattoo from her wrist to her elbow. How can she go out and meet clients looking like that?? It can be seen through tops and obviously below short sleeved tops.

What I really don't like is seeing lovely brides on their wedding days, strapless dresses and tattoos on their upper arms and backs..... urgh!!!!!!

Anyone else with me??

Body modification is as old as the hills. YABU. Fashions for body art come and go...tattoos are a personal choice and I personally love them. I have none because I am terrified that the artist might make a mistake.

I'm such a huge control freak perfectionist that I'd have to tattoo myself!

HintofBream · 28/01/2013 17:22

Thanks, StuntGirl. That is quite a lot of money, but at least tattoos don't wear out. I'm too old for a tramp stamp, which I assume would be quite cheap. Maybe a Granny Graffi? - Pair of knitting needles? Walking stick?

manicbmc · 28/01/2013 17:24

Excellent, MrsDeVere. Grin

I want another one but not sure what I want yet.

ditavonteesed · 28/01/2013 17:26

there you go bream

TomHardysPinky · 28/01/2013 17:28

I have 5 tattoos.

I'm planing a huge one on my thigh in a few months.

If anyone was rude about them I'd tell them to fuck off.

Dead classy, me Wink

Seriously though, my DH doesn't like them, but its my body and I love them.

The way I see it is I could die tomorrow so I'm not gonna worry about regretting them or being old with tattoos.

Live for today.

If I fancy a new one, I get it.

No ones business but mine.

McNewPants2013 · 28/01/2013 17:28

I do look after my tattoos once they look faded I have them recoloured and touched up now and again.

I don't like them once they have gone greenish colour

StinkyWicket · 28/01/2013 17:33

YABU. Who cares?

And for those of your saying tattooed people don't judge those who have no tattoos - you're having a laugh aren't you? Why then was I made to feel about two inches tall when I went into a tattoo shop to ask about prices? Yes, I had a baby with me, and yes I had no visible tattoos showing, but for all they knew, under my winter wear I could have been covered!

Oh well. My money obviously is not good enough for them.

HintofBream · 28/01/2013 17:33

Grin at Dita

stopgap · 28/01/2013 17:39

The accumulation of vast numbers of tattoos reminds me of people addicted to cosmetic surgery. But each to their own. Many of my friends have them and they're a varied bunch of people.

Lily15 · 28/01/2013 18:17

My DH is a tattoo artist and covered all over (minus head/face/neck) I don't have any. Our children are very proud of what daddy does as am I. He is incredibly talented. I think people tend to expect tattoo artists and collectors to be 'alternative' but that is not always the case. We own a beautiful home and DCs are in a fantastic school...People don't hide their surprise very well when they ask what DH does...I guess they expect him to be a banker like the rest of them!

lesmisfan · 28/01/2013 18:58

I hate them, I think that without exception they look dreadful, I do judge but that is my issue, nobody elses.

Some people don't like curly hair for example so should nobody have curly hair to suit those people?!

I don't personally care about tattoos. Some do look awful, some look great. I don't particularly like the generic tribal/heart/star/butterfly ones people get but that is their choice. My DH has tats, he suits his. I doubt I would but that's me. Different folks and all that.. What works for one won't work for another. They are quite sexy actually if the person can pull them off.

RattyRoland · 28/01/2013 19:17

Yanbu. They ain't called tramp stamps for nothin.

YouOldSlag · 28/01/2013 19:20

loofet- curly hair is something you are often born with. Tattoos are not. Its a bit like saying you hate the look of skinny jeans or something. Its a fashion choice that people choose.

I don't think the OP is saying they should be illegal, just that she doesn't like them.

I don't like how they look either, but each to their own. You might not like my jewellery or perfume or favourite top, but its still my choice, as tattoos are yours.

HappyMummyOfOne · 28/01/2013 19:32

Each to their own tastes, i cant abide them for all sorts of reasons but no different to having extreme taste in clothes or hair style. We all judge people so its a little unfair to slate the OP for doing so as everybody does at some point.

usualsuspect · 28/01/2013 19:56

So ratty, are you saying everyone on this thread who has a tattoo is a tramp?

noddyholder · 28/01/2013 19:59

The sort of people who call them tramp stamps are a whole other story

BinksToEnlightenment · 28/01/2013 20:05

I love how positive this thread turned out.

I don't have any. I don't want any. I am incredibly indecisive and incapable of choosing something to stay with me for the rest of my life.

But being bothered about other people's? Nah, get over it. Unless they have a tattoo of you with a speech bubble saying, "I'm hard for tattoos", get over it.

Renniehorta · 28/01/2013 20:16

renniehorta "I hate them and it does colour my judgement of people who have them." What judgement is that then? I have a tattoo. It's in a subtle place & you'd never know unless I decided to show it to you. What is your judgement of me? That I'm a bit rough?

Yes, that would be my initial judgement.. It may be wrong but that is what I would think. If I got to know you, I might find that to be wrong.

MidnightMasquerader · 28/01/2013 20:22

But tattoos are soooo mainstream now - I can see why a generation ago, you might've jumped to the conclusion someone was 'rough', but these days...? When Sam Cam has one?

Every other middle class Mum has one, and half the aristocratic ones... //\

Badvoc · 28/01/2013 20:24

I quite like the Maori facial tattoos...don't know why.
Just do.
I don't know how you decide what to have?
What if you change your mind?
What we like at 17 is rarely what we like at 40....

MissYamabuki · 28/01/2013 20:42

sorry but IMO they never look good. And they will look worse over time. . The OP has a point in that some workplaces are still very conventional in their looks / dress code - so having a visible tattoo could work against you. I have acne scars and I find it bizarre that some people would pay somebody to defile their body permanently.

Not trying to offend anybody, just my opinion

Moistenedbint · 28/01/2013 22:37

Yanbu. What started as an edgy counter-culture statement/was the preserve of the rebel has now become the badge of the conformist. (more often than not) They're mainstream, ubiquitous and no longer unique. Then and now Estate agents, bank tellers, individuals like Samantha Cameron, felicity Kendall and Helen Mirren are all sporting "ink" (fucking loathe that term) and I have to say the shock-value has been, erm, somewhat diluted as a consequence.

And while I do appreciate the artistry involved, I feel that very few people successfully carry them off... From an aesthetic perspective I'd rather see that talent expressed on canvas/paper rather than indelibly etched on to my skin. It's the sheer permancy of it. Individual tastes, feelings etc evolve yet tattoos don't. Used to like Jason Donovan as a teen... But i certainly wouldn't want a permanent reminder of that now that I'm in my mid-thirties. Recall an analogy which likened tattoos to having a pair of 70s platforms permanently affixed to the soles of your feet. You may have loved them in the 70s but can you live with them indefinitely?

This is little more than another fashion trend.. And I fully expect laser removal will be an extremely lucrative profession in the not too distant future.
