AIBU to hate those 'words' you have to type in to prove you are a real person?

You know the words I mean. The ones on the internet that you sometimes have to use to prove you are a real human being. I can never work out what they are meant to be. Why can't they be real words and much clearer? AIBU?

I have huge problems with it-I tried the 'listen' version and that was worse. They need to be clear.

sarahseashell · 27/01/2013 19:00

YANBU - can't always read them the wavy ol buggers

IneedAsockamnesty · 27/01/2013 19:01

I can't read them its frustrating

freddiefrog · 27/01/2013 19:01

YANBU!

Why can't they just use normal fonts?

I can never work out what they're supposed to be either. If I have to spend hours trying to work out what something says before I can sign up, I just don't bother

HecateWhoopass · 27/01/2013 19:02

Captcha.

It has to be wonky otherwise computer software would easily read it and then it would be pointless.

Plus there's some project of decoding old books with funny text or something, I think.

yanbu, they are so blurry and you can't tell if characters are 1,l or I for example.

Some sites have a bar you slide across instead, they are much better.

piprabbit · 27/01/2013 19:03

YABU - I think they are a simple security measure. None of the retired people I help to start using computers have ever had any problem with them (using a mouse on the other hand is a huge hurdle).

Kaida · 27/01/2013 19:05

YANBU they are horrible. I much prefer the simple sums ones, so much clearer and less frustrating.

Bogeyface · 27/01/2013 19:09

You been watching Michael McIntyre?! He does a half hour rant about trying to book tickets online :o

I use the audio version, far easier.

aquashiv · 27/01/2013 19:09

YANBU pain in the ass

YANBU they are annoying.

Apparently they are impossible to read if you've had a Stroke / TIA in certain part of the brain as well.

Also it's never clear if they are capitals sometimes, & it takes ages to get past them, just irritating.

CloudsAndTrees · 27/01/2013 19:22

YANBU.

Some of them are really difficult. I wouldn't mind the letters being wonky if you could tell what they are, but quite often you can't. Sums are better.

Ilovesunflowers · 27/01/2013 19:31

I haven't seen the Michael Macintyre sketch. Just had to do one to register on a site. Couldn't figure it out at all. I never find the listen versions any better. Good to know I am way behind the old folk piprabbit. That's made me feel much better!

That thing about digitizing books is fascinating. I'll feel less resistant about it now.

I like the acronym: "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart"
