to buy my 2.5 year old a full size single bed?

He's sleeping in his cot bed, and I don't think he finds it very comfortable. I was looking at "children's" beds today, and read something about them being suitable for children up to 7 or 8 years old...

Would it be unreasonable to think that a good quality full size single bed will last him until further notice, not just until he's 7? Don't fancy forking out in a few years time for another bed. Am I being tight? Grin

What a weird question Confused

Why wouldn't you buy a single bed unless space was an issue?

thegreylady · 15/01/2013 19:22

I'd go for a good quality single bed with a detachable bed guard to start off with.

Of course not. Just a regular single will be fine.

We put ours into a 'normal' single bed from about this age. Didn't bother with a bed guard, either. I don't think it's tight. Think it's just sensible.

MrsBungleBear · 15/01/2013 19:23

My dd went straight into a single at 2. I broke the bloody cot bed when changing it from a cot to a bed.

Never been a problem.

TattyCatty · 15/01/2013 19:24

Not at all - plenty of people do it. Just invest in a bed guard to help with the transition if you're concerned about him falling out of bed. We made the mistake of buying a "toddler bed" for DD when she moved out of her cot. She grew at the speed of light, and had outgrown it comfort wise by the time she was about 4.5 years old. We cut to the chase after that and moved her into a double bed, which was our spare bed at the time. She absolutely loves it, although I'm sure that her future partners will curse us as we've basically taught her to sleep starfish style - she takes up the entire bed! Grin

ARightOldPickle · 15/01/2013 19:25

My 3 all went straight from cot to full size single, no problems at all.

Perfectly fine. My DDs were in adult singles younger than this because we had a weird American sized cot and they got wedged across it - they slept so much better. Children's/toddler beds are just a way of making more money out of people.

JoandMax · 15/01/2013 19:28

We just went straight to normal single beds with a cushion on the floor, didn't bother with bed guards!

Mine both had cotbeds but the bed bit just looked so small and uncomfy I ended up buying the singles.

pamplem0usse · 15/01/2013 19:28

Im sure ill be flamed for it but i put my dd into a single at 15 months. we largely co slept until then and she'd never slept through the night until 'the bed'. she's 2.4 now and loves her bed. we removed the guard at about two.

MerylStrop · 15/01/2013 19:31

I've found from experience that the full size beds my elder 2 had were very much more comfy than I imagine a kid-size bed would be when I had to get in with them at night

It's not tight, it's just rejecting the idea that you have to buy stuff you don't need or want. Wouldn't bother with bed guards on the same basis. Tuck the duvet in on the outer edge and put a pillow on the floor if you really must.

KirstyJC · 15/01/2013 19:32

We put all our three into a single bed at about 20 months or so as the cot was very small. No bed guards, just a lot of cushions and they soon learned to stop falling out! DS3 co-slept a lot and hasn't fallen out at all.

No idea why anyone would buy a toddler bed unless space was an issue - what a waste of money!

(Although I quite fancy one of those single beds with a slide and tent on them for myself!Grin)

SoldeInvierno · 15/01/2013 19:32

mine went straight from the cot to a single bed when he was 2. Why waste money on a smaller bed if you have the space for a proper sized one?

Bigbouncingbaby · 15/01/2013 19:33

My Dd went from cot to double bed at 22 months ! No problems

colleysmill · 15/01/2013 19:33

Ds went from sleeping well in his cot to a nightmare sleeper in a cot bed. Just couldn't keep him in it so I gave up - bought a second hand divan bed for 20 quid (had never been used though) and side guard and he went back to sleeping through.

I only regret not doing it sooner - we had 3 months of him sleeping every night with us which was lovely for cuddles but jeez he didn't half jiffle in bed!

McNewPants2013 · 15/01/2013 19:35

ds went straight into a double bed, perfect for when he is ill, wants hug, stories ect.

BabsAndTheRu · 15/01/2013 19:39

My two wee boys have been in normal single beds since age 15 months. They went straight from cot to single beds. Didn't use bed guards either as its a higher fall if they climbed over, just put pillows at each side on the floor. Find cot beds and toddler beds a waste of money.

MagdaMagyarMadam · 15/01/2013 19:39

DTDs went from cotbeds to sharing a kingsize last month 4yrs 9 months. They never really liked their cotbeds once the sides came down ans have played musical beds for the last 18 months.

We gave them our bed and bought ourselves a new super king which fits all 4 of us in

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 15/01/2013 19:49

Fine, DD went into a low level IKEA single at that age, v comfy, and can be used as impromptu trampoline.

digerd · 15/01/2013 19:53

My dd was in a single bed at 2.

PigeonPair · 15/01/2013 19:53

Have a look at Dream Tubes - a fitted sheet with zipped compartments which contain inflatable tubes. Great for at home, staying with family and taking on holiday. Also great for keeping the duvet on! You can buy them from Amazon.

Thingiebob · 15/01/2013 19:56

Do it.

Is there a problem with 2 year old sleeping in full size single beds that I don't know about?

wearymum200 · 15/01/2013 19:56

Both mine went straight from cot (we had no cot bed) to standard single at just 2 yrs. Bedrail helped mainly to keep covers on the bed!

SayMama · 15/01/2013 19:57

DM very kindly bought DD a toddler bed when she turned 2. Now she's just turned 3 and honestly I don't think it'll last another year. Admittedly she's tall but I'm thinking it would only last an average sized child until they were about 4.

She looks cute in it, sure. But honestly I think you're right to go straight to a single bed.

Nevercan · 15/01/2013 19:58

Same straight to full size single here too for both my two DD's
