to buy my 2.5 year old a full size single bed?

He's sleeping in his cot bed, and I don't think he finds it very comfortable. I was looking at "children's" beds today, and read something about them being suitable for children up to 7 or 8 years old...

Would it be unreasonable to think that a good quality full size single bed will last him until further notice, not just until he's 7? Don't fancy forking out in a few years time for another bed. Am I being tight? Grin

Can't think why anyone - unless they genuinely have a room that is too small to put one in - WOULDN'T go from cot to full size single. My children moved out of their cot straight into full-size singles - and as they are robust plain sold wooden beds rather than 'children's beds' I fully expect them (with a change of mattress or two) to last them until they leave home, and certainly DS's has lasted over 10 years to data, including through 3 house moves.

Ours went from Cot to full sized single bed. Why would you spend money unnecessarily? Just why? It's a con this toddler bed business.

SizzleSazz · 15/01/2013 20:03

Ha, ha. I have ranted about the pointlessness of toddler beds on MN before when people are asking 'which one should I buy?'

NONE OF THEM

Dd's went straight to single beds at 18 months (needed cot for dd2) and 2yrs.

WhatchuTalkinBoutPhyllis · 15/01/2013 20:04

yabu to even have to ask!

I can't think why would it bu?Confused

McNewPants2013 · 15/01/2013 20:04

perhaps getting DD a full size single may solve her sleep issue, only got a toddler bed due to space but i can change her bedroom around

twinklesparkles · 15/01/2013 20:05

why would that be unreasonable? :)

Mine had a full size single (low down frame) from before 2
He needed it

McNewPants2013 · 15/01/2013 20:06

OP sorry to hijack your thread, but would a mid sleeper be ok for a almost 4 year old

Bunbaker · 15/01/2013 20:07

Toddler beds are for those who are very short of space or for the gullible. IMO they are a waste of money.

AnnoyingOrange · 15/01/2013 20:08

Toddler beds? Never heard of them. Mine went straight into normal single beds after the cot

Forester · 15/01/2013 20:10

Hi. We went straight to single bed and was fine (just put the cot mattress down beside it at the start). The only thing I would say is that I was careful about the headboard - i.e. I got one that is basically solid with small cut outs. I avoided any ones where I thought there was any risk she could get her head trapped. (I think it's because of this they have the recommended age of 6+).

apostropheuse · 15/01/2013 20:13

My son went into a full size single bed at about fourteen months. He was tall and was also in a plaster cast from hip to toes because of congenital dislocation of the hip, so his legs were splayed and touching both sides of the cot. He was absolutely fine and never fell out. We did put a bed guard on though.

My grandson went into a full size single bed at fifteen months. Again he was very tall. Mind you, it's low down to the ground as it's a red racing car bed. There's no need for a bed guard with that style as it has slightly raised sides where the pretend doors are. As it's a full size single my adult son can easily sleep in it. Not that he chooses to though! Grin

I had some great advice from a friend. I have two ds very close together and when ds1 was ready for a bed I bought bunks. I kept one flat packed in storage and used the top bunk on the floor. A single bed with a guard all the way round. When ds2 was ready for a bed I simply swapped ds1 into the 'bottom' bunk. Genius.

ChablisLover · 15/01/2013 20:16

Yanbu - ds went straight into a single bed but we had a guard on.

The first time without the guard I was watching tv and heard an almighty thump - ds had fallen out and the funniest thing was tht he was still sleeping when I run up to see!

I see kids bed as a waste of money - why buy one and then have to buy another one in a few years - just cut out the middle man.

acceptableinthe80s · 15/01/2013 20:18

I've been looking into my options recently and doing some measuring. From what I can see toddler beds are exactly the same size as cotbeds! Space is an issue for me so I'm holding out a bit longer and going for a midsleeper with storage underneath.
You can get extending toddler beds but they're still very narrow.

Indith · 15/01/2013 20:20

Mine have gone straight to full sized beds. Ds1 went into a divan bed that was so high he couldn't actually get in and out himself as that was what was provided in our rented house at the time Grin. I don't see the point of toddler beds, just a money spinner.

I never had bed guards either, they only fall out a few times before they get used to it Grin.

Pigsmummy · 15/01/2013 20:21

I slept in my neices child's bed and it was terrible quality, for a single bed, loads of great sales on currently too!

elliejjtiny · 15/01/2013 20:29

DS1 and DS2 went straight from cot to single beds at around 2.5. Much cheaper, especially when you think about all the bedding they need at that age (or is it just my children who have leaky night time nappies?)

EarlyMorningBaconDemon · 15/01/2013 21:40

My DS is 20m and has been in a proper single bed with a bedrail for 4 months now. He absolutely loves it. Seriously can't wait to get into bed every night.

He hated his cot - and I really mean hated. He'd scream and thrash because he felt so enclosed, but he's the soundest sleeper ever. As soon as he dropped off he wouldn't move a muscle, but the battles we'd have trying to get him to sleep were Arthurian and legendary.

I'd say, if it feels right then go for it.

MrsMelons · 15/01/2013 21:52

My DS2 did not sleep in a cot bed at all, it was awful, he went from sleeping through every night from a few weeks to us taking the cot sides off and him getting up 6/7 times a night. He just wasn't comfy.

Eventually we bought him a bed as we realised that when we stayed at my mums or were on holiday he was fine and didn't get up at all when in a nirmal bed.

We got Silent Night My first beds as they are normal size single beds but just a bit lower than a normal divan. We used bed guards as DS2 in particular would have fallen out every night!

Glittertwins · 15/01/2013 21:59

DD went into full size bottom bunk bed at 20 months. We didn't need a bed guard for her, she just doesn't move at night. DS's bunk, which is the top one, has the built in guard which was fine for him when his bed was on the floor. His bunk was put back up when he was about 3.5, when he was able to climb up and down the ladder safely.

McNewPants2013 · 15/01/2013 22:08

Why are cot mattress so thin in the first place, compared to single+ size beds.

pingu2209 · 15/01/2013 22:20

Don't buy a standard size single bed, buy a 3 foot bed. This is far more comfortable as they get older, and if you ever let an adult stay over and put your dc in with you (which is what we do), a 3 foot bed is far better.

Debs75 · 15/01/2013 22:22

Yes straight to a full size single bed is the cheapest and easiest way.
DD1 went into hers at 2.6
DS in his at 18 months, refused a cot after a house move so shared with me until we got 2 singles side by side, only fell out twice but there was lots of musical beds.
DD2 went into hers at 2.5 as dd4 needed her old cot.
DD4 can't have a bed as we have no room but if we ever move she will probably share a double with dd3.

Never had bed guards, a couple of cushions or folded quilt at the side of bed is fine

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 15/01/2013 22:55

Toddler beds aren't purely for the gullible though. DS had a racing car toddler bed which he adored, helped him want to stay in bed, and gave him a great deal of pleasure over a couple of years for the same price as a couple of big toys or a family Panto trip. They're not necessary , but they can be a reasonable extravagance IYSWIM.

GreenShadow · 15/01/2013 22:58

Yeah, just buy a normal bed. Absolutely no reason to do otherwise.
