to negotiate my financial settlement without a solicitor?

My solicitor has been so slow and I am really at the end of my tether. I have been waiting four months just for her to send a very simple letter. So far she has cost me £3,500. I have run out of money!!! The amounts involved are not enormous.

She has given me advice which is very middle-of-the-road but I know what I want to offer as a settlement.

AIBU to just fire her and write to my husband's solicitors myself?

I can always hire another solicitor if he isn't happy to settle, I guess?

AIBU?

No. My husband and I have come up with a financial settlement on our own. We might get a solicitor to draw it up legally but that's the only cost we'll (hopefully) incur.

Your plan will work if your h is reasonable.

If he isn't reasonable, and I want to go to court, can I still avoid costs by representing myself? I'm about to have my hours reduced by 50% at work (I work for a charity) and I can't afford any more! I can't even pay my own rent!

Ex and I (no kids) didn't use solicitors at all for our divorce or financial settlement - we didn't see the point of all that money ending up in the solicitors pocket!

We remained civil and sorted it all out ourselves. I sued him for divorce on the grounds of adultery and he agreed.

All sorted in eight weeks and only had to pay for the court fee.
