About going to the same place on holiday?

potatopotato · 14/01/2013 15:56

This is my first AIBU so don't be too harsh Grin

Last year me and DP went to Portugal for a week's holiday. I'd been to the same resort/town twice before (and stayed in the same hotel once) and it was DP's first time there. We had a lovely time and were both sad to leave.

Now it has come to booking this year's holiday and I think we should go back to the same place, but he disagrees.

My reasons are: it will be a boozy beach/ sunshine holiday somewhere in Europe wherever we go, so not like we will be exploring culture/sightseeing etc. It is probably the best place i've ever been to for this kind of holiday- lively strip but it's not full of massive groups of teenagers like Magaluf or Kavos etc. Everything is close by- beach, strip, shops etc not more than 5 mins away. Lovely, mainly English hotel with nice staff and a HUGE infinity pool. Portugal is (correct me if i'm wrong) hotter than Spain etc.

Basically I think we are lucky to have found such a perfect place for the type of holiday we want. I've been on lots of holidays that seem perfect but when you get there they are just a bit lacking in something. I work hard all year and this is my only break so I want the holiday to really live up to my expectations.

DP, however, feels that we should go somewhere new to 'experience it' and try new things. I've been to a lot of European beachy resorts so I don't feel the need to try new ones just for the sake of it, they are normally pretty similar, except this place in Portugal which really stands out.

Also, all we will be doing is sunbathing and drinking, so I don't see why we should risk ending up in a shithole just for the

Everywhere's expensive in the school hols, innit?

BegoniaBampot · 15/01/2013 18:03

have to be AI?

BegoniaBampot · 15/01/2013 18:09

used to love going out of season. cheaper, quiet and cooler - bloody schools!

Badvoc · 15/01/2013 18:11

Ooh not skeg AF!....noooooo

I don't know how any family affords to go abroad on the school hols tbh...been looking for us (4) and it would be £2.5/3k for a villa in somewhere like menorca a...add on £1k for AI.
So we are going to Northumberland :)

Badvoc · 15/01/2013 18:13

Didn't like lanzarote at all.
Liked halkidiki in Greece.
Went to the Oceania club.

Badvoc · 15/01/2013 18:14

...ds was being home schooled at the time so we went in term time otherwise couldn't have afforded it!

AnyFucker · 15/01/2013 18:16

Begonia, yes, has to be AI. My two are food and drink machines. Erm, so is DH. And me < ahem >

Badvoc, yup, looking at approx 3.5k for a fairly low brow holiday. Bloody madness.

Badvoc · 15/01/2013 18:17

Check out the Oceania club...the food was amazing

AnyFucker · 15/01/2013 18:20

4.5k for Oceania Club. Waaaay outta budget (looks lovely though)

Portofino · 15/01/2013 18:21

AF - forget the AI and go to La Carabasse with Siblu. 2 bedrooms - tick. Sporty stuff and beach activities - tick. Cheap wine - tick. Safe for teenagers to roam about, go do karaoke of a night. Huge fun fair, town, beach, mini golf - all about 10 mins walk away.. Not too chavvy - tick (well at least i went there)

Airport 15 mins away and you don't need a car. Plenty of place to get a pizza and nearby deli serving meals to take away - so you don't need to cook. Bands on in the evening.

Portofino · 15/01/2013 18:22

Beach is sandy. Pool is nice, with waterslides.

Badvoc · 15/01/2013 18:22

Oh...shame :(
What about Italy?
Lake como?

AnyFucker · 15/01/2013 18:32

Badvoc, don't think my kids will be interested in a lake. I could do to get the kids their own holiday, and me and DH have ours Grin

Porto...where is that one you are talking about ?

AnyFucker · 15/01/2013 18:34

Ah, South of France. Mobile homes. Not really what I was looking for, but who knows ?. Which airport is it, and I bet they don't fly from manchester.

I'm a pain, I know it.

Portofino · 15/01/2013 18:37

Beziers - Ryanair fly there. Not sure if from Manchester....

BegoniaBampot · 15/01/2013 18:38

what's your budget?

landofsoapandglory · 15/01/2013 18:44

We went to Playa Blanca last July AnyFucker, we shan't be going back. It was a bit meh IMO. Red hot by day, you couldn't walk bare foot on the ground, and as windy as hell come later on in the afternoon and evening. No point doing your hair at all! I thought it was a bit run down but trying to be upmarket and it was expensive to eat out, compared to other places we have been! We went because PIL's rave about it, but it wasn't for us. We prefer the old town of Puerto Del Carmen, TBH.

bringbacksideburns · 15/01/2013 18:46

I know a really nice AI in Kos AnyFucker and it doesn't break the bank.
Nice waiter service too. But only pebble beach next to it i'm afraid - but still pleasant.

And handy with teens - you can hire bikes and it's 15 min cycle to Kos Town, fab Harbour etc Lots of little windy streets, bars, places to eat there.

I'm looking at Cala Bosch but wondering if it's too packed in August. Never been to Menorca.

AnyFucker · 15/01/2013 18:48

Begonia...3K

ish

AnyFucker · 15/01/2013 18:49

sideburns, yes I know Kos and the beaches are not great

have been trying to find something in Cala N' Bosch but it's very expensive for what you get

for our budget you are talking El Grotto accomodation

AnyFucker · 15/01/2013 18:51

soap erk, I wanted you to tell me it was fab and I should book forthwith

have been looking at the Rio Playa Blanca

it's a shit hole, isn't it ? Say it ain't so (don't worry, you can be honest, I haven't booked it)

MumOfTheMoos · 15/01/2013 18:51

Yanbu - I found a great 'crash out by the pool' resort in Greece a few years ago, went there again with dh a couple of years ago, he loved it too and this year we are going back with our DS who will be 18mths.

I love traveling and experiencing different places but this is not the point of this week away - the point is to relax and I know that I will get to relax at this resort. On other holidays we will experience new things.

BegoniaBampot · 15/01/2013 18:58

found 2 wks for 4 ,AI cyprus aug for just over 3 gran

landofsoapandglory · 15/01/2013 19:00

I don't know that hotel AF, but tbh I was really disappointed when we got there. I spent the whole week fed up that I had listened to PILs! It's not cheap to get there but it felt like it should have been!

Someone else the otherday, posted about a hotel in Cala N'Bosch that we had spent just over £700, for all of us, to stay in when it was new 10 years ago. They said it was £3.5k, had I have paid that I would have had a full on throw yourself on the floor tantrum when I got off the coach and saw where I was saying!Blush

BunFagFreddie · 15/01/2013 19:04

I think it would be fairer to take it in turns when you choose your holiday destinations.
