About going to the same place on holiday?

potatopotato · 14/01/2013 15:56

This is my first AIBU so don't be too harsh Grin

Last year me and DP went to Portugal for a week's holiday. I'd been to the same resort/town twice before (and stayed in the same hotel once) and it was DP's first time there. We had a lovely time and were both sad to leave.

Now it has come to booking this year's holiday and I think we should go back to the same place, but he disagrees.

My reasons are: it will be a boozy beach/ sunshine holiday somewhere in Europe wherever we go, so not like we will be exploring culture/sightseeing etc. It is probably the best place i've ever been to for this kind of holiday- lively strip but it's not full of massive groups of teenagers like Magaluf or Kavos etc. Everything is close by- beach, strip, shops etc not more than 5 mins away. Lovely, mainly English hotel with nice staff and a HUGE infinity pool. Portugal is (correct me if i'm wrong) hotter than Spain etc.

Basically I think we are lucky to have found such a perfect place for the type of holiday we want. I've been on lots of holidays that seem perfect but when you get there they are just a bit lacking in something. I work hard all year and this is my only break so I want the holiday to really live up to my expectations.

DP, however, feels that we should go somewhere new to 'experience it' and try new things. I've been to a lot of European beachy resorts so I don't feel the need to try new ones just for the sake of it, they are normally pretty similar, except this place in Portugal which really stands out.

Also, all we will be doing is sunbathing and drinking, so I don't see why we should risk ending up in a shithole just for the

Its not my idea of fun, but I can understand your pov. My Dp always wants to go to the same place on holiday. We compromise and go there every 3 years. I find it very boring going to the same bars, restaurants and beaches. It stifles me to think of all the other places we could be and of the different cultures we could be experiencing when we are just in the same places. Really bores me to death.
But Dp likes the familiarity. He's bot a great traveller, gets very stressy about new places and is generally more relaxed when he's in surroundings he recognises.
But its down to you and your Dp to make an agreement together as neither of you ABU.
that was no help at all!

wordfactory · 14/01/2013 17:25

Life is far too short to go back to the same places...then again, life is too short to spend time boozing by a pool!

Hully - if you know where to go to in Turkey, it's hard to beat IMO and I've been to many destinations. With Spain I was talking the general seaside resorts popular with Brits. Cities or if you go inland off the usual path is very different.

Hullygully · 15/01/2013 08:52

Where do you go Begonia, you can whisper...

FellatioNels0n · 15/01/2013 09:41

I've been the same place (accommodation and everything) twice, four times.

Once (well, twice in fact) Confused to Turkey

Once (twice) to the Dorgogne

Once (twice) to Cornwall

Once (twice) to Languedoc-Roussillion bit of France.

I would go back to both the French places again, but there is so much more of lovely France I haven't seen yet, so it seems daft.

Ooh, just realised I've stayed in exactly the same place in Majorca twice as well.

And Abu Dhabi.

And Florida.

Ok, maybe I do this more than I realise. Grin

SugarplumMary · 15/01/2013 09:56

I don't get why it's odd to go back to the same location.

When you have limited resources - time or money - isn't it normal to want to minimise risk of wasting it?

DP, however, feels that we should go somewhere new to 'experience it' and try new things. I've been to a lot of European beachy resorts so I don't feel the need to try new ones just for the sake of it,

Reading this I'm wondering if your DP isn't as traveled as you so wants to still explore - there is also the possiblity that he one of these people who half the point of going on holiday is to come back and tell everyone where they have been - I have family like that.

All I can suggest is you compromise - this year your choice next year his or vice verse.

HullyGully said "Where do you go Begonia?

and HOW ON EARTH can you not like Seville, Granada, Madrid, Barcelona, the Alpujarras...?"

Hully, are you this woman, from the Thickos On Trip Advisor ll thread?

""Appalling and not genuine Spanish"

Having travelled all over Spain (Torremolinos, Alicante, Sitges, Palma de Mojorca etc) I have to say that the Villas is the worst place in Spain. Right down from the desayuno (breakfast) which was about as genuine Spanish as fish and chips. I expected churros y chocolat chaud, strong cafe sin leche, meats such as village sausage and parma ham. Yet we were given fresh fruit cocktail, sweet bread rolls, yoghurt, poached eggs and toasts, preserves. No spanish thing in sight. I am sure that the cafe sin leche which I asked for was Nescafe. Unimpressed. Dinner did not fare much better. We were expecting paella con carne/pesce, porc, authentic gazpacho. If I had wanted pork chop and three veg', then I would have gone to Blackpool.

To the rooms, they were tasteful. They had Moroccan style tiles which reflects Andalucia's moorish ties. Ana, the maid was spotless and really appreciated my efforts at conversing with her in Spanish. Just goes to show that if you make an effort with these people then they will hold you in esteem as I often forgot to put away my valuables but Ana didn't move them or touch them. The pool area was marvellous, really, with the palm trees providing much-needed shade from the Andalucian sun.

However, I only rate the villas 2.5 as Neville and I are used to typical Spanish fayre when in Spain. We are not ones to go to Spain and ask for chips and fish. I wish that the villa owners would treat their guests as the seasoned travellers that we are! We are not typical "brits abroad"!"

Jesus christ."

We should be told.

Fluffy1234 · 15/01/2013 10:07

I don't think either of YABU and agree about taking it in turns to choose where you go. I couldn't return to the same hotel myself because I would worry it may not be as good as I remembered but mainly for me because life is to short to waste the opportunity to explore somewhere new. I like varying the type of holiday as well as the place. So maybe a city break, then a twin centre somewhere long haul and then a cruise,

Hullygully · 15/01/2013 10:22

YES I am she

Portofino · 15/01/2013 10:29

The world is too big to keep going to the same resort. Even if we are talking France, France is a big country and the regions are entirely different - Alsace vs Provence, Languedoc vs Dordogne etc. You should see my TripAdvisor map Grin. Even in Europe there are hundreds of places I would like to go, not to mention the rest of the world, which I probably won't squeeze in now.

BegoniaBampot · 15/01/2013 10:45

Hully. - if I told you I'd have to kill you. Luckily it's not that well known in Britian.

Hullygully · 15/01/2013 10:47

I like Turkey very much

I went to Marmaris when it were nowt but four village houses and two whirly ice cream sellers, and Olu Deniz when you had to get a dolmus and there wasn't A SINGLE SOLITARY BUILDING WITHIN TEN MILES

EuroShagmore · 15/01/2013 10:52

For what you want from a holiday, then you might as well go back to the place you like.

Personally, even when I have gone on cheapie beach holidays in the past, I have always wanted to explore a bit so I don't really understand your position, but for what you want it seems reasonable to go to the place you like.

BegoniaBampot · 15/01/2013 10:55

First went to Turkey over 20 yrs ago. Olu Deniz was stunning. We stayed at a camp sight right at the tip of that famous beach and had to wade through the lagoon to get to the beach a 100 yards away. Then you've got the food!

AngryFeet · 15/01/2013 11:27

Not sure it matters. I tried to do a booking for that place OP to find out how much and every date in the summer appears to be sold out!

Hullygully · 15/01/2013 11:54

Oh yes Begonia. Happy days.

I lost my bikini bottoms on th elittle island after jumping in. Fond memories.

holidaysarenice · 15/01/2013 12:34

potatopotato I have been with my mum, was lovely! Very chilled and lots of little bars and little beaches! Loved it

potatopotato · 15/01/2013 12:36

AngryFeet yes I know it's the most popular of the three from the same chain, so might have to stay in one of the others.

Patchouli · 15/01/2013 12:37

You're the one who might as well back down I think.
Let your DP enjoy some beautiful surroundings, pootle round a local market climb a volcano, whatever.
You'll be okay so long as your in sun and plonked by a pool with a drink.

AnyFucker · 15/01/2013 13:49

Humpf, I looked at that accomodation on the strength of what the op said too and it is sold out

am struggling with this summer's hols

erm, have been to Ibiza 6 times and the same accomodation 3 times Blush also Majorca at least twice, Lanzarote at least 3 times, Tenerife at least 3 times, Gran Canaria 4 times (same Riu hotel twice) < ahem >

you kinda do run out of family orientated short haul places to go eventually

AnyFucker · 15/01/2013 13:50

any other recommendations, OP ? That Oura Beach View did look rather nice (for the small ££)

FellatioNels0n · 15/01/2013 14:13

We were expecting paella con carne/pesce, porc, authentic gazpacho. If I had wanted pork chop and three veg'

Imagine the frothing indignation at expecting porc and being served pork. Shock

FellatioNels0n · 15/01/2013 14:13

Those poor ol' Spanish can't win can they? They give us the food we know and we moan, they give us the food they know and we moan....

FellatioNels0n · 15/01/2013 14:15

I can recommend Turkey. Tis lovely if you pick the right spot. And they do actually like us Brits, unlike almost everywhere else. Grin
