My niece has been to stay this weekend as I hadn't seen her in a long while - she worked abroad over the summer. She did her main job during the week and got a second job cleaning large holiday homes on the weekend.

There was a mixture of both males and females doing this.

All the girls were required to clean bathrooms and the men made the beds and vacuumed. The roles were never switched.

Maybe I just hate cleaning toilets and in my opinion vacuuming a floor is amuck nicer job to do.

YANBU. All men should be required to sort out toilets on a regular basis.

DeepRedBetty · 14/01/2013 14:18

YANBU. Where abroad was this?

BigStickBIWI · 14/01/2013 14:19

Oh goodness no. I hate vacuuming. Give me the cleaning job any time! (Actually I hate that as well ...)

CailinDana · 14/01/2013 14:52

I'd imagine the bed and vacuuming are considered the more heavy-duty jobs, which is why they were given to the males. Cleaning other people's bathrooms is a horrible task though (I used to a chambermaid - my god people can be mucky pigs) so it doesn't seem fair that the women always have to do it.

WorraLiberty · 14/01/2013 14:54

It might be sexist or it might just be lazy management.

Far easier to do it that way than sort a proper rota IYSWIM?

quirrelquarrel · 14/01/2013 14:57

It might be sexist or it might just be lazy management.

Most sexism stems from laziness to be honest........

polkadotsrock · 14/01/2013 14:57

Did anyone actually ever try to switch roles?

manicinsomniac · 14/01/2013 14:58

It's not fair or balanced but it isn't sexist as none of those roles are traiditionally assigned to men.

It would be sexist if the girls did all the chalet work and the boys worked behind the bar for example. But in this case they have just been divided into two groups (by gender for ease I imagine) and one group has been given a far shittier (literally!) job than the other group.

PiccadillyCervix · 14/01/2013 15:09

Of course it is sexist, and the women have been given the most degrading job. And even more annoyin is that they are cleaning men's toilets which are always more disgusting than women's toilets anyway

polkadotsrock · 14/01/2013 15:12

I don't think cleaning is degrading and how do you know they we're mens toilets? They were chalet toilets, they're not divided by gender are they?

polkadotsrock · 14/01/2013 15:13

*were

SPBInDisguise · 14/01/2013 15:15

It is sexist, they allocated the jobs based on sex. Doesn't matter what they were.

Hullygully · 14/01/2013 15:17

I hate mopping
