to give medical advice to random strangers?

Our telephone is almost the same as the Doctor's, if you transpose the last two digits. We get loads of calls for him.

Is it terribly bad of me to ask wrong number diallers to list their symptoms? And suggest they refrain from sexual activity for 2 weeks? And give up alcohol and recreational drugs for at least a month? And cut out the rock and roll music?

The last caller said he had a sore throat. He also sounded about 80. He said he would try (!)

Am I a bad person?

No. Let's go down the pub and have a couple of vodkas while we laugh about it Smile

Convict224 · 14/01/2013 12:10

Ok, I'll get my coat. Erm, I'd rather have a whiskey.....

No worries. Cheese 'n' onions crisps do you?

babylofty · 14/01/2013 12:13

He sounded 80? So was probably quite a vulnerable ....

Hmm

Am I missing the joke here?

StuckOnARollercoaster · 14/01/2013 12:14

You are a bad person!!!

I had this at an old job! Never had the nerve to do something like this or crack a joke though...

Most people were fine and would simply redial the correct number I'd reiterate to them. Its the ones who would argue with me, and then phone me back a few seconds later, and then again and would insist it was my fault that make me wonder about the human gene pool!

lovelyladuree · 14/01/2013 12:14

All very funny until they drop dead and the relatives sue your arse off.

StraightTalkinSheila · 14/01/2013 12:21

Bah, lighten up, Lovely.

Convict224 · 14/01/2013 12:37

Well he sounded about 80, but he had a sore throat, so he was probably only about 75.

I get the arguers too. One guy told me just to fuck off and get the Doctor. I told him he had the wrong number, I hadn't given him any advice, but if I had it would involve horseradish and his rectum...

Lovely, you definitely need to keep taking your meds.

I think I'm missing the joke as well. Do you tell them that they haven't got through to the Dr's? If not, yabu. People are ringing for medical advice! While I appreciate its annoying having people call you, peoples health is not something to be messed around with. Maybe you or the Drs could request a new phone number to stop it happening in the future.

Years ago the local bank printed off a load of leaflets and put my work number in by mistake as the branch number.

The messages I used to get on my answer phone! People would be telling me their account details, card numbers, asking about mortgages, etc! I used to spend more time working for Midland Bank than I did doing my actual job!

absolutmum · 14/01/2013 13:07

Our old number was very similar to the number for Wembley. I got very fed up with people phoning to try and book tickets to see the likes of Robbie Williams!

Drove me round the bend.

Fakebook · 14/01/2013 13:13

I don't see the joke either. You've just given fraudulent medical advice to an elderly person during winter, when funnily enough there are more old age deaths than any other time of year. Not funny.

Delalakis · 14/01/2013 13:30

We tend to get people calling for taxis in the middle of the night because our number is similar to that of a local minicab firm. If I'm grumpy enough I tell them we'll send a cab and then unplug the phone. I reckon people who phone late at night have to take the consequences if they can't be bothered to dial properly.

CwtchesAndCuddles · 14/01/2013 13:40

Our number is very similar to the local dentist - I've had some very strange messages on the answerphone about dentures. I always call them back and explain they had the wrong number as they would be waiting for their call to be returned - it only takes a momment or two.

Our number is also very similar to Morrisons - I get a call a week asking to speak to the manager!!

If the op is true then YABU
