To think MIL putting her nose in DS mouth is totally out of order?

She first did it when DS was 3 weeks old. When I mentioned it to DH he said he saw her do it but she probably wouldn't do it again which she didn't until this afternoon twice!! DS is 6 months but no matter how old he is I don't her or anyone's nose in his mouth AIBU?

I dont think i would like it, i had a "friend" who kept putting her fingers in dd mouth at under 3 months old to see if she was hungry or teething Hmm

I hated that

janey68 · 13/01/2013 18:02

Ew!
I think the fact that a baby will inevitably put germy things in their mouth later is irrelevant. I mean, who goes around deliberately putting snails and stuff in their kids mouth?
Quite apart from any hygiene issue which I agree is probably minimal- its just WEIRD!

My DH holds 7wk old dd close to his face to see if she's hungry. She lunges for his nose and has a good suck if she is.

I don't think it's that odd, but I do think it completely undermines his insistence on everything else which comes near her mouth being sterilised...

TeaMakesItAllPossible · 13/01/2013 18:13

Princess interesting question.

For me personally, after the Jack Russell's bumhole I have worried less about stuff in my DSs' mouths but there have been things that I still worried about .... the rugby tackle by DSS1 on DSS2 so his face landed in a cowpat is one that springs to mind. He too is fine mind - though I wasn't impressed as DSS2 was shouting don't as he fell. He kept his tongue hanging out for a long time after and I didn't phone NHS direct that time - we were up a hill and there was no mobile coverage.

catgirl1976 · 13/01/2013 18:19

Both me and DH do it to DS

He also used to suck on it like a nipple

Now he giggles and bites it

It's cute

NamingOfParts · 13/01/2013 18:31

What people do with their own DCs is their own business. Their child, their business.

IMO grandchild is a huge step different. I appreciate that different people have different boundaries but for me that would be weird and I would have stopped myself from telling her.

NamingOfParts · 13/01/2013 18:32

would not have stopped myself from telling her

SneakyNuts · 13/01/2013 20:41

I agree with Naming

pigletmania · 13/01/2013 20:49

I do it to 11 month ds Blush, he loves trying to bite it as he teething at the moment

elizaregina · 13/01/2013 21:56

how odd - i have never ever heard of this - i cant even picture it?

a great big ugly old nose with huge pores and black heads and some grease around the nostrils - and maybe even a few hairs - being shoved into a fresh beautiful new little rose bud mouth?

shallweshop · 13/01/2013 22:01

Actually I would rather the tip of a nose than a finger, which probably many more people think its ok for a baby to suck on - minging!

FabulousFreaks · 13/01/2013 22:01

you need a chill pill op

elizaregina · 13/01/2013 22:03

is this really common then> do lots of people offer up thier - noses - for new borns to suck on>

Bluestocking · 13/01/2013 22:03

Come back, OP, and tell us why she does it!
FWIW, I think it's weird. I'm sure my DS sucked on my nose/his dad's occasionally but we wouldn't have stuck our noses in his mouth deliberately and I sure as hell wouldn't have wanted anyone else sticking their horrible, germy proboscis in his mouth. Even if babies do put worse things in their mouths, this is just gross and weird.
You've reminded me that I once saw a friend of my mother's sticking her tongue out so her baby grandson could suckle on it - now that really was weird. Perhaps it is something the oldies think is normal?

gimmecakeandcandy · 13/01/2013 22:04

No no - noses carry germs, don't do this people! No!

shesariver · 13/01/2013 22:04

No way would I want my baby sucking them out of some old codger's nostrils

What an offensive way to describe the babies Gran, and you have no idea how old she is!

McPhee · 13/01/2013 22:07

Not something I'd appreciate tbh

MIL obviously got some sort of delight out of it Confused

RubyrooUK · 13/01/2013 22:08

Oh dear today, DS shouted "I eat your nose mummy I eat your nose" and then proceeded to pretend he was eating my nose all up with much hilarity all round. He is 2.5.

I thought it was very funny.

I imagine he comes from the kind of freaky family where we let babies suck noses for laughs. Blush

gwenniebee · 13/01/2013 22:13

I was once woken up by my dd (now 6mo) latching onto my nose. She's done it to my dh too. She's ok so far...

Viviennemary · 13/01/2013 22:14

No I wouldn't like this at all. Noses are full of germs. Yuck and yuck again.

elizaregina · 13/01/2013 22:15

"No way would I want my baby sucking them out of some old codger's nostrils

Oh - do you think that is why the gran did it - to get help with bogies being removed - by the baby, if she is an older person that is? Confused

I dont understand!

DoJo · 13/01/2013 22:19

I'm more surprised at those who haven't had a baby at least try to suck their nose than a granny letting one. Surely most babies will aim for any protuberance they can get their gummy little mouths on won't they? Mine somehow managed to pite my jawline earlier and has been known to nibble on my toes, knees and elbow given half the chance too...!

HDee · 13/01/2013 22:20

if you don't understand, elizaregina, then perhaps you need comprehension lessons? Just an idea.

FWIW, I clarified in a further post that old, young, middle-aged, codger or stud, their nose would be out of bounds to my baby's mouth.
