to want to milk my free dental treatment for all it's worth?

What can I get done for 'free' before my maternity exemption runs out? Is a scale and polish as much as I can expect? Guessing it won't cover a full set of Hollywood style veneers...?

I don't know about veneers Grin but I did get a white filling! I'm not due a check up until April but my exemption runs out at the end of March so you know when I'll be booking it for!

no i dont think you will get that hollywood smile you want Grin but you will get any essential treatment that you need for free, I got loads done when i was pregnnat with dd2 as when I was pregnant with dd1 seemed to ruin my teeth (not sure why)

Before I was pregnant, a botched emergency filling left me needing a tooth removed. Whilst pregnant/in the year after, I have had it removed, several other fillings, several scale and polishes and fitting for my new tooth.

I persuaded my dentist to replace two bridges and two crowns + a whole load of less expensive stuff.

I got nothing...just a silver filling and scale and polish! Wilson how did you swing veneers???

My dentist talked me into clear braces during my maternity leave and they are currently costing me 3k!

I remember getting loads done not good that they needed done but i got crowns and a few fillings at the front white ones ,

Get whatever's needed, god knows it costs enough at any other time. But you won't be getting a Hollywood smile- it will
Be Stuff that needs doing before your exemption expires

Yanbu.IME pregnancy really messed with my teeth so I had to have loads of work done that year.

saycheeeeese ooh, which braces did you get and how is it going? Am thinking of taking the plunge this year.

My dentist would only do silver fillings for free, I had to pay for white ones.

YANBU if you need work done and couldn't otherwise easily afford it. That's exactly what it's for

YABU to want to do it if you are wealthy enough to pay and/or it is cosmetic work you fancy.

This dentistry is not "free". It's paid for by hardworking taxpayers. Benefits are for the needy not the greedy.

I had an appointment just before my exemption ran out, I was covered for all work decided on that day even if it ran over my exemption as I had started my course of treatment.

The one and only time I didn't get a polish was when I didn't have to pay.
Now I can't afford it I need one every time.

saycheese they were coming to the end of their life (had them done when I was 16) and the gum was moving away from the join. They wouldn't have taken out perfect ones, but they needed re-done so my dentist said 'will we do them?' and I said 'yes thank you very much'.

It's good that this is available now. It wasn't, when I had my babies: I lost a tooth for each pregnancy + year of BFing, so I now have two gaps in my mouth, and I have never been able to afford to do anything about them. Thankfully they're at the back, so not visible unless someone looks for them, but they make me feel older than I am. :(

So use this offer, but don't abuse it. If it costs the taxpayer more than it saves, it will soon be withdrawn.

There's very little you can get done while pregnant or even breastfeeding if you need your mouth frozen. In fact my dentist wouldn't even scale and polish while I was pregnant incase I got distressed (I have extremely sensitive teeth) so by the time I had my dd and got around to booking an appointment I only got two free appointments, one to scale and polish and one for a silver filling.

My mum got 3 crowns made of gold for three pregnancies 35+ years ago so I think we are kinder to our fellow taxpayers these dsgs :)

i had a crown that needed replacing about a month before my certificate ran out
i was never so glad to need dental treatment.

I have a maternity exemption certificate and my veneers need replacing but dentist said I'd still have to pay privately to get them replaced. Wish they'd told me that when I had them done on nhs when I was 16, I would of looked at alternative options. My dentist then told me to have them, I had a huge brown mark on my two front teeth I think she said it was because of flourocess (sp?) Or something like that. Now I can't afford to replace them and they desperately need replacing.

More commonly found in mint-loving kids who sneaked extra tastes of toothpaste
But often misdiagnosed , should be enamel hypo mineralisation ( various causes)
