To think that if I spend upwards of £50 on a warm coat

for a picky 13 year old who insisted that she needed a coat (necessitating a special trip to the nearest city as our town had nothing she liked), a coat, moreover, that she chose herself after trying on multitudinous outer garments in a variety of hideous retail locations then she should at least wear the thing once. It was bought at October half-term so she has had plenty of opportunity (freezing cold days, torrential rainstorms).

I know this is what teenagers do, but at least DD1 never made me buy her a coat she had no intention of wearing.

I feel your pain. DD is only 12 and so far, we haven't had too much trouble with buying her stuff and her not wearing it. Threaten to sell it on Ebay...see if she suddenly starts wearing it. If she doesn't, actually sell it and if she complains about having no coat, give her the money you get, no matter how small an amount it is and make her buy her own replacement!

I feel your pain, DD16 and DS15 haven't worn a coat for about 6 years, I buy them they aren't touched, so I stopped buying them..

DD has suddenly said she wants one, so I bought it and guess what, she is wearing it and to quote her 'its really nice' Grin

Still working on DS Hmm

I feel for you OP, it happens here time and time again, does my head in.
Every time dd's tell me they will wear the overpriced item from topshop and everyy time i fall for it, now i try and encourage them to shop at cheapy primark and get them to spend their own money as this mum has had enough of wasting so much!
Good luck but i wouldn't hold much hope in getting stubborn teenage girls to wear a coat whatever the weather!

That's when I knew my kids were finally growing up. After about 7 years of non coat wearing, two of my older teens ASKED for coats for Xmas !! (aged 18 and 19!)

thebody · 11/01/2013 17:28

Yes agree. My dss never wore coats as teens and now in 20s do.

Dd 13 and 12 have warm jackets from hollister so happy to wear them. In snow they wear ski jackets.

I do feel your pain.

It's cold. It's raining. She is just about to head off to the cinema. Let's see if we can persuade her to give the coat its first outing.
Either that or I'll take up the Ebay suggestion.
