I am shaking with worry - did something soooo stupid

This morning on the way to drop ds at school (a drive I have done for 10 years) I clipped another car and took off my wing mirror.

I heard the bang but didn't realise my wing mirror was hanging off for at least 50 yards and was running a bit late. By the time I said to ds, what happened? we were another 100 yards on. I was in shock and dropped him at school (90 sec - he hops out as I pull up - he's 18 so no danger).

Realising what had happened I went back to the spot and parked and examined all the the parked cars for damage to leave a note with details, etc.. I couldn't see any damage.

It all happened so fast - but I should have stopped and I didn't am now really worried that I will be reported for not stopping after an accident.

There's not much I can do but I feel absolutely dreadful and terrified someone will have taken my number and reported me.

My wing mirror looked wrecked but I went straight to my mechanic and he says he can repair with half a wing mirror and it will only cost about £100 but that's not the point - I didn't stop and I feel terrified and awful because I should and I can't really explain why except for the shock factor and that I was 150 yards away and almost at school before it happened.

Oh that sounds pathetic - but 30 odd years of driving and I've never done anything so stupid.

This happened to my sister. Someone saw the whole thing and gave her the number plate and offered to be a witness. The police found the woman who did it and told here she h ad comitted an offence. She was terribly sorry and upset, she had panicked. She called my sister and apologized paid for repair. My sister was fine about it. At least you went back. Call the police or you won't rest.

Notagainmun · 01/07/2015 16:24

Oops :(

GGabcd · 01/07/2015 16:44

I meant the first person or two who posted!!!!

Once the warning is gone, fine.

But the person who started it must be blind.

SistersofPercy · 01/07/2015 16:56

If you read Tranmeremum's post she was asking for advice as the situation mirrored her own. I'm guessing she saw the zombie warning but hoped that the OP might come back with a resolution or that others had a similar issue.

GGabcd · 01/07/2015 16:57

And she didn't just start another thread because...

GoblinLittleOwl · 01/07/2015 17:05

I clipped my wing mirror twice, once on another car and once on a bush; I stopped and felt exactly the same as you, but the car I had clipped was totally undamaged, my mirror took all the damage. You could register it with the police, in case anyone tries to claim for damage, but I don't think it constitutes an accident and you haven't done anything wrong.

SistersofPercy · 01/07/2015 17:13

And she didn't just start another thread because...

Who knows? Perhaps she thought OP might see it reappear in her 'threads I'm on' list? Perhaps she thought that rather than starting another thread on the same subject she'd just ask on this one.

It's not like people would say 'not another thread about x' on here is it? Wink

haveabreakhaveakitkat · 01/07/2015 17:21

Where is the Zombie warning? I've never seen one

SistersofPercy · 01/07/2015 17:58

Looks like this kit kat Smile

I am shaking with worry - did something soooo stupid
haveabreakhaveakitkat · 01/07/2015 18:13

similar incident just happened to me and I'm quite worried! I'm a new driver and haven't been insured for long. I was driving past a car in a tight space in 2nd gear and all of a sudden i heard a sound to which I didn't pay much attention so I drove off. I looked back and the car had stopped, as I was in a hurry as I was doing school run I drove off and I later realised my wing mirror had been hit and it had been damaged. After I had dropped the kids to school which took about 5 mins maybe less I went back to that road hoping to see the car but it had gone. I'm quite worried the person might've taken my reg number and might make a claim! I really don't know what I should do, any tips?

leelu66 · 29/01/2016 09:39

I later realised my wing mirror had been hit

Do you mean the other person hit you or you hit them? You seem reluctant to admit your responsibility.

You saw the car had stopped, so you really should have stopped. You could have explained to your school that you were involved in an accident. Doing the school run is not an excuse to just drive off.

If they make a claim against you, find out if there is a way to settle i.e. pay for damage yourself instead of going via insurance.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 29/01/2016 09:41

Zombie!

goodnightdarthvader1 · 29/01/2016 09:45

Do you really need two threads about this?

CocktailQueen · 29/01/2016 09:55

Wow, deja vu! Two threads on the same subject!

MrsMarigold · 29/01/2016 10:04

If it makes you feel better I did this during my driving test - needless to say I failed!

Patapouf · 29/01/2016 10:06

ZOMBIE ALERT

The OP from the other thread about the same topic has thoughtfully revived this one for us too.

ClaudiaApfelstrudel · 29/01/2016 10:44

someone damaged my wing mirror recently all of a sudden it didn't work properly. I'm pretty annoyed but I'm not going to go and dedicate my life to finding out the culprit so I wouldn't worry too much

Goingtobeawesome · 29/01/2016 10:50

You tried but if you feel it would make you less stressed phone the local station.

Someone smashed my wing mirror when it was shut so must have been going too fast. No note left Angry. Think it was about £50 to fix.

Papergirl1968 · 29/01/2016 11:40

Sorry, just realised the other one is an old thread which op commented on, then she started a new thread.

evethere · 06/02/2017 13:32

2 weeks ago i parked into a tight spot,i couldn't open the car door so i reversed out and clipped another car wing mirror which was parked next to me,mine pinged back ,when i parked safely i put my mirror back into place
and checked the others wing mirror ,no damage. Now my daughter was asked if i had a certain car and she answered yes, they told her that i had damaged thier car and if i was going to pay for it ! i know that there was no damage to that car, what am i going to do ?

namechange20050 · 06/02/2017 13:35

Why reopen this thread? So bored of this today. Every thread is a sodding zombie thread.
