To not go to St Lucia because of pregnancy worries

Hi all

Sorry for hijacking AIBU to ask for travel advice, but most traffic here and need to book ASAP if we're going to. I would be about 24 weeks pregnant. Have other people done this, and I being too paranoid about possibility of health risks and medical care in case anything goes wrong?

The other option is California.

Thanks!

Flown to both Antigua and Dom Republic in earl stages of pregnancy. Wouldn't bother me unless you have issues with your pregnancy.

Binkybix · 10/01/2013 20:12

Thanks - luckily no issues so far. It's not so much the flight - it's more worried about medical care if any complications arise that could be easily monitored/dealt with here. I think I am being a little paranoid perhaps!

St Lucia was lovely - are you going on the beaten track?

SIL had to make use of medical care from the Almond Cove place we stayed at and it was fine.

Has you pg been fine so far?

I loved St Lucia, beautiful place and eye opening

Pigsmummy · 10/01/2013 20:15

ST lucia is lovely, other places I wouldn't go to, ST luciai would though.

Binkybix · 10/01/2013 20:19

Yep - all been fine so far pregnancy wise thankfully. We would not be particularly adventurous - looking at nice hotel, and most we would do would be a few gentle excursions!

st Lucia has 6 hospitals and the couple that I quickly checked have also obstetricians and maternity wards, you'll be fine. Just get appropriate travel insurance.

You won't like this story but there was a lady on the pregnancy forum a couple of years back whose waters broke at 20 something weeks while she was on holiday in the US. She was hospitalised in the Us and unable to travel home until the baby was born prematurely. travel insurers gave them some grief and They had all sorts of problems when her Dh later had an accident and needed treatment as their travel insurance didn't cover the extension to his stay.
Its a tiny tiny chance that something like that could happen... Just sayin...

Primafacie · 10/01/2013 20:26

Pinky, if I remember right that lady got covered in the end, so not sure it really helps OP.

I had really awful pregnancies, so I would not have gone to a poor country (and I have been to SL and it is poor) in third trimester. I don't know how I would have felt with healthy pregnancies though.

I went to Barbados at 22weeks and it was fabulous, like you I was nervous so I made sure I had a really good travel insurance policy and made sure I took my notes with me (on advice of my midwife).

I had an amazing time and even took my DD back to the same hotel aged 8 months was lovely showing all the staff the result of my 'bump'Grin

So go go go!! And have a lovely timeWink

I travelled to Mexico at 24 weeks pregnant with ds1. It was a low risk, straightforward pregnancy and I had a lovely time.

Do your homework about medical provision, ensure that you travel insurance is very comprehensive and check that no vaccinations will be needed then have a great time!

Ohcrapwhathaveidone · 10/01/2013 20:29

Oh and when taking out the travel insurance I brought it over the phone so I could make sure they made note of the fact I was pregnant-just in case!

I went to New York at 31 weeks pregnant

PurpleCrazyHorse · 10/01/2013 21:16

Make sure you insurance also covers your baby's care if it's born prematurely, and doesn't just cover you.

Florida at 27 weeks insured with citybond.... Only stressful thing I did was shop and perched on the edge of the jacuzzi with just my toes in!!!
