A woman I know went on a night out and got extremely drunk, so much so the night ended in her being arrested. Her baby was about a month old at this point.

I can't help thinking this is really terrible, but I'm not sure if AIBU. It might be the Jeremy Kyleness of the details which has me recoiling. Maybe it's no worse than anyone else getting banged up for being a pisshead horror? DH maintains she's within her rights to go and get smashed if she wants. I can't quite accept that. WDYT?

the OP has already stated that she wasn't BFing.

Does it matter that she's a mother? I think any person who goes out and gets drunk enough to get arrested is a brainless waste of space. She was a person within her own right before having a baby, so she was probably always a piss head but pushed it over the edge that particular night and got arrested.

I think I would judge her more harshly on account of her being a mother too to be honest. (I would judge a father more harshly than a single bloke too) To me, when I go out on a night out I still need to stay within my limits because I am responsible for my dd the next day. I would feel horribly guilty if I got so smashed I couldn't take care of her the next day, and I would be cross if hubby did it too. Then again, my dd is my PFB so maybe I am just overly cautious?

"Of course she should be judged -she's committed an offence, but the defence will probably use this in their favour as 'mother to a newborn can't cope', etc etc. At least social services will be informed and hopefully given the support she clearly needs as well as being fined/community order for the offence she has committed"

Did I miss the bit about her being charged and convicted? Hmm

Her tolerance was low, she got drunk and acted a bit foolishly . It happens. Get over it.

littlewhitebag · 08/01/2013 21:25

Social services won't give a shit if it was the first time and something minor. More so if the baby was being well cared for by someone sober and responsible.

Also you can be arrested without being charged or convicted.
