To be a bit annoyed at this dog walker

I live close to a forest and lots of people walk down our road to take their dogs for a walk. This morning, I was walking on my street, pushing a double buggy, and a dog walker was coming the other way with 5 smallish dogs, all on leads. No problem there, so far...

The dog walker of her own free will decided to get off the pavement and walk around me as there was not enough space for a double buggy and 5 dogs to be on the pavement side by side - the only thing is, as she passed me, she said in a very cross voice 'THANK YOU!' ermmm so I turned around and said why should I say thank you? It's you who's got five dogs?' She was clearly upset and mumbled something which I didn't get, anyway I just walked away. Should I have said thank you, really? Did she really expect me to get off the pavement because she had dogs? Was I being rude?

Oh I always call them away, tbh, they never walk off lead near pavements anyway, only fields and beaches, so they are always on lead when we pass people and I do always move them to the edge of the path and put them into a sit, or wait, I just get annoyed when people do not acknowledge that I have moved for them.

CabbageLeaves · 03/01/2013 18:25

Rude and precious OP.

Just imagine posters on Dogsnet bemoaning mums who hog the streets with their pushchairs acting like they can't possibly move across to let another pass. ...finishing off with a comment about it's their job as a mum to push prams so they should just get on with it

phantomnamechanger · 03/01/2013 18:26

next time dog walker ses OP coming she might get all her pooches to leave a 5 presents in her path!

Actually no, she sounds far too nice to be that sort of dog walker.

And I agree with recharge, that the OP's sense of entitlement comes from the "residents vs visitors" POV - she thinks she's better than the visiting dog walkers cos she lives there

mummytotwins · 03/01/2013 18:27

You should have thanked her, she moved so you didn't have to move or squeeze past I would have thanked her without thinking tbh

ditavonteesed · 03/01/2013 18:29

cyclists arent usually too bad, buggy owners on the other hand walk in the woods (how very dare they) and just stare at my dogs with utter disgust because they are not on a lead even though they are always called to heal while poeple pass.

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/01/2013 18:30

I must agree with others here.
You do sound a bit territorial about 'your street' Op. Grin

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 03/01/2013 18:39

I'd have said thank you automatically, but a lot of people don't. I always move out of the way with my dog and rarely is it appreciated or acknowledged

BrandonFlowersHoHoHo · 03/01/2013 18:45

I'd have thrown you a 'You're welcome' with a hint of sarcasm. Maybe next time you met her she'll refuse to move and there will be a stand off on "your" street. I'd like to see that.

YABU.

D0oinMeCleanin · 03/01/2013 18:47

Maybe we should all turn up on OP's street with our dogs and hold a 'stand in' Grin

Be careful, OP, dog walkers talk to each other Shock

redexpat · 03/01/2013 18:49

If someone goes out of their way (in this case quite literally) you acknowledge it, even a smile and a nod, more often than not a thank you.

FWIW I don't think I've ever seen such a unanimous thread!

Notmadeofrib · 03/01/2013 18:51

I honestly thought you were going to say she let the dogs lean into the buggy and sniff the baby!... those kids have fried your brain OP!

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/01/2013 18:52

YABU and rude.

She is a person remember.

TidyDancer · 03/01/2013 18:54

Gosh yes, very rude OP.

You should've smiled and said thank you, something like that. You did not have right of way over her just because you had a child and she had dogs, she was kind and you were very rude.

OhlimpPricks · 03/01/2013 18:55

Thank you is just two words, and to smile costs nothing.
Takes about as much effort as thinking about it and making a desicion not to....

So it's ok to thank someone who opens a door, but you thought about it and died a dog walker was not worthy of the effort.

Have a look in the sales for a grip. You really need to get one...

coffeeinbed · 03/01/2013 18:56

That's it, really.
The dog is a red herring.
Someone moves out of the way, whether they have a dog or a pink elephant or indeed nothing on a lead you say "thank you"
As simple as that.
Unless you happen to be an entitled gormless twat.

OhlimpPricks · 03/01/2013 18:56

decided not died!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 03/01/2013 18:56

Having had experience of trying to move one dog slightly to one side... to be honest I think a pushchair would be easier to get off the pavement than five dogs Grin

She could just as easily (and justifiably) have replied "It's you that's got two children."

HoneyDragon · 03/01/2013 19:03

The only people I don't expect a thank you from when I move are runners / joggers, but even then you usually get a nod of thanks.

I´d also move with my PFD.

But 5dogs/double buggy-maybe about equal in the difficult to manoeuvre stakes?

In fact I think the dogs have it & should have stayed!

I love it when that happens Hesterton.
I love people who apologise. I love people who say 'yeah, fair enough.i see our point'

sunshine401 · 03/01/2013 19:23

I would say thank you it was nice of her to move so you did not have to :)

TwoFacedCows · 03/01/2013 19:43

You are very rude, I have 2 dogs and I will move out into the road if someone is coming down the path. To not say thank you is just bloody ignorant.

You have kids, she has dogs. I much prefer other peoples dogs compared to other peoples kids!!

MrsBW · 03/01/2013 21:32

Not only do I think YABU, my 4 year old niece (who has an age appropriate grasp of basic manners) would say YABU.
