to be annoyed that DP has been turned away from Giving Blood...

AIBU for being annoyed that DP has been turned away from giving blood because her went to the gym this morning?

I feel annoyed as it has been booked in for a while (following another thread last month on blood shortages, and how some MNer's had got their partners to donate because they couldn't, I can't due to having a transfusion myself and being a recipient of egg donation so DP said he would for me, how sweet!) and we've just moved house so he could have easily just not turned up but he didn't, he went along and answered all the questions. But apparently there was a risk of him passing out because he'd done exercise today. I'm just surprised tbh. Prepared to be flamed for this.

he was also looking forward to his tea and biscuits in peace without 17 month old dd begging for one!

Sounds wierd to me...I go to the gym every morning and still give blood after if I have an appt...never been turned away yet.

You sure he didn't chicken out? Maybe he was anaemic?

I've never been asked about exercise when I've given blood. Maybe it's a new thing. How odd.

I passed out big style the last time I gave blood and hurt my head quite badly on the way down. They didn't turn him away for a laugh.

I've never heard of that being a reason before...are you sure it was for that reason?

I was turned down as I had surgery a few months prior. I was kind of disappointed but what can you do? Least he tried and he can always do it next time.

Did they ask if he'd worked out that morning, or did his blood results show something up?

They are fussy but not that fussy ime - maybe it was something else - eg painkiller couple of days ago but he felt like an idoot so said it was the gym???

He is definitely telling the truth. He was actually looking forward to it and knows it means a lot to me too.

What's more frustrating is he's not booked back in till march.

I find it odd too. My mum has given over 40 pints over the years and she's not been asked that question either. Wonder if its because it was his first time?

I've never been asked about exercise when I donate and I work out regularly. They tell you to take it easy for about 24 hrs afterwards though.

Are you sure he wasn't turned away for another reason (e.g. past high risk behaviour?).

That's not one of the questions they ask you (I'm assuming UK?) are you sure he didn't just wuss out?

He can book back in though before March - I do my bookings on line so get to chose the venue etc.

I have never been asked about exercise in the last year --can't remember any time before that-. Weird, but maybe a first timer thing?
I would phone the hotline and ask them about it.

No past high risk behaviour at all. We joked about it this morning whilst he was completely the questionnaire (ie paying for sex, etc)

It was one of those cave man training sessions he's done this morning, but I'm just surprised they were so strict. I understand the risks, but he'd surely need to be extra cautious afterwards.

He said someone had passed out and hurt themselves previously so that's why they said no. He even offered to sign a disclaimer but they said no.

They don't turn people away for fun. I've been turned away before, its annoying and disappointing but they know more than me so I trust their judgement.

Once I thought I had a bit of a cold, went anyway and asked them and they said no. Good job too, as a week later it developed into a serious chest infection that had me off work for weeks. But how were they to know what illness I had or might get? They can't take risks with blood, so YABU.

It sounds like that particular unit have had an issue and are extra cautious. Lots of people do pass out at first and frankly I expect the nurses thought they could do without that today. I know from my work (hospital) that big, tall young men are shockers for passing out when blood and needles become involved It is annoying for him though.

I currently live in the US and cannot donate blood or plasma because I'm from the UK. I kid you not!! Apparently because I lived in the UK in the '80s I'm considered at risk for Mad Cow disease. It's a shame because I would glady donate if allowed!

Never been asked either but it is noticeable now that they are taking extra measures to reduce faintness, the pint of water drink in the waiting room, the new sit up chairs for while you donate instead of lying down, the leg exercises they suggest, so maybe this is just another new development?

I was a first-timer (at least in this country) about a month ago and that question never came up. The questionnaire was comprehensive but did not ask anything of that nature.

Honey, they also state that in Australia for giving blood.

I was born in 1980 so I wouldn't stand a chance.
