AIBU?

Is it just me or is that Disneyland Ad designed to make you feel like an utter bastard for not taking your children there?

This is meant to be lighthearted but no other advert for anything makes me feel this way. Esp if you watch it with your children present; The lifting, swelling, string music and the look of joy and glee on the children's faces and smug contentment of the parents. To top it off it's a "thank-you" to all those wonderful families who let Disneyland share in their celebrations at the time they told their children of this holiday. Surely they are actors?

Although I completely see why you would want to go there and maybe it is a nice family break this advert irritates the hell out of me. It's more that just presenting an attractive product or aspiration, it makes you feel..bad somehow for not doing something amazing for your children, and Disneyland is very, very pricey.

Maybe IABU? - post Chrstmas burn-out Grin

Ah I see Lynette it is those poor people again.

I mean really who the fuck do they think they are? Saving up to go do something silly and fun, immoral bastards.

Luckily I can afford both wholesome family fun and sugary junk holidays so my values are intact. Phew.

offred I may not rate my time at DLP as the best holiday ever but I think you are going way too far in some of your comments, especially your pity at others enjoying Disney!

And what are "Disney values" for goodness sake?

This is how I look at it; If I happen to find myself near a Disney park with people who want to go, I will happily go along with them.

But I won't make it my final destination, to return home not having seen the local wildlife.

Why don't they advertise Disney Tokyo, becuase that would be one cool holiday...Culture and Disney...they whole family would be happy.

OMG - I want to save up for that holiday..it actually sounds quite fun.

Although I've never actually wanted to go to Japan.

They should build Disney in India. That would be fab!

ermmm Disney Florida is PART of a Florida holiday - we went airboat riding in the everglades, swimming in the Blue Springs National park, on a Wildlife "cruise" round the Kennedy space station area - visited Kennedy space station.... yes we spent 3 days at Disney theme parks and 2 at Universal, but we also visited the Disney Wilderness preserve south of Orlando and did a lot of walking.. and ooing and ahhhing at the Herons and egrets (and water rodents!)

When we do Disneyworld we are going to park in one of those massive McMansions for a month.

I would like to see the Everglades (and go on one of those hovery boat things - I am sure they have a name, I just can't be arsed). We will be meeting up with friends from 4 different countries and sharing the house with them. We might spend a week down in the Keys.

Who knows. But the main reason I want to go to Florida is Disney, I really enjoy theme parks and Disney does them best IMO.

There is a that giant aquarium up in Georgia as well that looks interesting.

My list never gets any shorter. So many places to see, so many things to do.

Japan is pretty fab. We saw the teeniest tiniest little bird which at first we thought was a bug, but now I think it was a bug that looked like a bird. ByTheWay1, So many people I know don't do that, though. They do 2 weeks in Disney.

One friend who recently returned seemed quite excited about the pack with socks/eye mask Virgin give you on the Virgin flight. I was Hmm. I have quite a few of those packs (DM gets us about 4 a year) - If that was the highlight of your Orlando Disney trip, then I won't bother.

Oh come on. I fly all the time, often first and business and I still love the little baggies of things they give you.

Enjoy the little things, I really like little pots of jams and stuff as well.

Is a bit of fun.

You can enjoy flash things and silly little things.

Life is a lot more fun when you can derive a bit of joy from a teeny pot of jam. Grin

Funny you should say that, because when I stayed at the Pink Hotel at Disneyland Paris I loaded up with the free little jams and carried them around in my handbag all day. Bloody heavy they were. Grin (Yes, I put the bubble bath in my suitcase too)

At one point a Disney lady offered to hold my bag (I have no idea how you get one of those Disney ladies who guide you round and you to the front of the queue - it was through work) offered to hold my bag. It was so unbelievably heavy she gave her colleague a really odd look. I think they went away a speculated about what I was carrying. If only they had known I'd swiped loads of their mini jams! Grin

Oh and I love Orlando, I love it so much I got a job there for 12 months when I was younger and had an amazing time. I love Disney but also the whole of Orlando, love the weather, the shops, the food.

I am lucky now that some of my family own a house there now so get that part free

Disney service is quite something.

I remember walking through Downtown Disney in LA with DH and DS1 and a staff member stopped us to give DS1 a toy and some stickers, 'just because' both DH and I waited for the hand to come out, but nope, 'just because'.

Then there is the gawgus Brian who worked the bar at the Grand Californian pool. A finer young man I have yet to meet, that boy worked his butt off to get my 'rita just the way I liked it (really really sour and with LOTS of tequila [no cuervo shit]). Of course he was doing it for the tip, I don't care why he was doing it, he was and of course I left him a hell of a tip for his efforts. Wink

Might have to reconsider the McMansion plan actually, staying at a Disney Hotel is really very nice.

LynetteScavo · 01/01/2013 00:17

Nah you can live in a McMansion and drive around in a 4X4 in this country (just like my neighbours over the road do - the McMansion wasn't there when we moved in, they built it) There are only certain places you can stay in a Disney hotel.

I know someone who blew everything she inherited from her grandmother on a week at Disney.

Morloth · 01/01/2013 00:28

hehe, I do live in a McMansion and drive a 4WD. Grin

You a quite right about only being able to stay in a Disney Hotel sometimes though.

They have some rather fab McMansions in some of the gated communities nearby Disneyworld though, 8 bedrooms, similar number of bathrooms etc. Perfect for our big group and so very very cheap.

I don't know anyone who has done that. Even people who stay in the disneys hotels.

We don't we rent a villa usually around davenport.

The free stuff isn't the highlight, its part if it. The free drinks on the plane is a highlight. Bit not the highlight.

Thursday morning I will be in universal islands of adventure. Whoo hop.

diddl - that's not acting - they are real people filming themselves and their children's reaction.

Although DH is with you on the bad acting.

I wasn't going to post but couldn't resist Grin - have name changed as this will out me and would prefer my other posts were not traceable to me as I was asking advise about a family member.

I had no idea I was do morally bankrupt and that my values were so corrupt - the things you learn eh?

We have been to Walt Disney World in Florida 7 times and have been on 4 Disney Cruises - basically at least one of our holidays for the past 10 years (since DD was 2) has been a Disney holiday. We don't only holiday at Disney as we are fortunate enough to holiday 2 or 3 time a year do we don't just do Disney.

For us as a family it's the best choice for us - we love Florida, we love the service, cleanliness and variety that is on offer. We always stay in Disney hotels ( a villa holiday doesn't appeal to me as I do enough cooking and making beds at home) but we use the hotel as our hub and over the years have visited the Florida Keys, Clearwater, Maimi etc. The Disney parks and resorts are amazing, the attention to detail, customer service and entertainment options are second to none.

We did our first Disney Cruise in 2008 and have our 5th booked for later this year. We have cruised to the Carribean, Russia, Alaska and the Med with Disney - amazing experiences and the beauty of the Disney Cruise line is that it is adult and child friendly with a good family atmosphere - not like the party ships ( celebrity etc - no smoky casinos, no drunken yobs)

Anyway the point of my post really was - if you can afford it and do your research it can be a fantastic holiday. People talk about queuing - if you have to queue you arent doing it right!! A little bit of planning can eradicate the queues - I've never waited more than 15 minutes for anything.

I can't see how anyone's holiday choices would cause others to feel sorry for them. Yes Disney is a large commercial organisation who are out to make a profit but so what? They happen to offer a good service.

Report
Sevenmilebeach · 01/01/2013 13:28

Oops should have said - we've just returned from Disneyland Paris ( our first visit) and it was not at all what I was expecting - the service was very, very poor compared to the US parks and the Cruise line. If that had been my first experience of Disney I would probably never have returned.
