AIBU?

Is it just me or is that Disneyland Ad designed to make you feel like an utter bastard for not taking your children there?

This is meant to be lighthearted but no other advert for anything makes me feel this way. Esp if you watch it with your children present; The lifting, swelling, string music and the look of joy and glee on the children's faces and smug contentment of the parents. To top it off it's a "thank-you" to all those wonderful families who let Disneyland share in their celebrations at the time they told their children of this holiday. Surely they are actors?

Although I completely see why you would want to go there and maybe it is a nice family break this advert irritates the hell out of me. It's more that just presenting an attractive product or aspiration, it makes you feel..bad somehow for not doing something amazing for your children, and Disneyland is very, very pricey.

Maybe IABU? - post Chrstmas burn-out Grin

We have been-the kids loved it but everything was bloody expensive. BUT when we told the kids we were going DS1 said 'i dont want to go'......so much for the disney magic. I dont think the big reveal in our house that day would have made a good advert

I agree. My auntie's xmas present to her grandkids (my cousin's kids) was a trip to Disney. They apparently didn't give a shit

I like disney films, but can't stand all the mickey mouse, saccharine-cheerful hi-de-hey type stuff. Urgh. And people in giant costumes

I'm taking my daughter to Disneyland Paris in January - she's 4 and not at school, so she's going for free. Obviously I'll pay in plastic tat, but I can restrict that spending if I choose!
She's really looking forward to it, from what I've told her, and from seeing the photos of characters in the brochure.
There was no big reveal though... and no pressur or expectation. Neither she nor I have ever seen the advert.
I am trying to keep her away from any adverts for as long as possible. We rarely watch TV, and when we do, it's pre-recorded - so I can skip the adverts.
If you don't want them exposed to this and other adverts, you can avoid adverts so easily, with so much stuff on YouTube or using Sky+ if you have it.

We have season tickets Blush for Disneyland Paris. It cost 99 euros each for a year, and my friend's DD got a free annual pass with us as she is under 7. We have a strategy for Disney that ensures that we never wait more than 30 minutes for a ride. (Obv this does mean there are things we don't go on some days, but it usually works out pretty well.)

I will agree that the food is shit though, and the service is appalling.

DS has a issue with people in costume. He always has, whether it's someone dressed as a banana leafleting on the street or someone dressed as Darwin in the museum. He even accosted the Yoyo bear in the street. Not sure why he takes exception to anyone in costume.

He would cause havoc at Disney!

I find the ad families a tad irritating. Didn't they change the voiceover on one of them? She definately used to say "we'h gewing to Disneh... FLORODAAAAAHHH" which hacked me off (ie 'not Paris with the plebs").

I agree it's overpriced and stressful - the down side is children do love it. I took my DD to DLP twice, 1st time I was wound up to the point I wanted to kill someone, but had to restrain myself for fear of traumatising my DD who just loved every minute of it. 2nd time, much more sedate, easy going affair, but still not worth the ridiculous price it cost (justified it in my head by splitting the cost with my mum who came with us). Went to Florida in May (someone else paid, I'd never afford it otherwise) and that was a holiday. Fucking amazing it was. DLP? Meh to that now. Grin

I never wanted to go there and refuse to support the Evil Mouse Empire so my children knew they were going to be deprived. So I can't say I feel at all guilty at their emotional blackmail advertising. But then I always was hard-hearted.

I think its more designed to remind people who have been how much they would like to go again.

DLP is a bit shit but our Florida holiday this year was amazeballs. The dc were just happy and it was all so easy. Not real but I would accept that unreality for two weeks of that. Needs hyper amounts of planning.

I get the guilt trips from all the stuff they post to me. I ordered toys the last few years online and now they know I'm here. I get their brochures and shiny books that Dd devours. Then we talk to friends and it seems everyone at the school has been this year, my poor Dd nearly 8 and never been, all her friends have been multiple times now. Blush I'd love to take her, it's a 6 hour drive to Disneyland, but Dh hates the place with a passion and I'm not going on my own.

I coped with 1 day of trailing round a theme park in DLP...dont get how it would be any better just because its Florida really, when all you do for a fortnight is ..trail round numerous theme parks! We are off to California next year and wont include Disney there, thats for sure!

We went last January and the kids loved it. I actually had an amazing time, Disney is so not my cup of tea but I loved it

We did the big reveal - kept it quiet until we got to the Eurostar and got them to read out the destination. DD2 had the perfect tv advert reaction, DD1 just grunted a bit then started whining about a drink.

sitting giggling at these responses - esp the big divorce Disney Daddy with lots of guilt! Grin

DD is so off beat in her tastes I would do the reveal and she would look blank or disappointed. She loves our holidays in Northern Spain or Sth France - Haribo factory though. My neighbour goes to DisneyWorld every year but when she shows offtells me about it it just sounds scary - when she started talking about a Disney cruise to Disney Island as their next plan I actually thought she was on crack.

Tell me this doesn't actually exist Shock

shesariver, for me it was the brilliant weather DLP was fucking freezing both times we went, the number of theme parks to do with the water parks inbetween, and the lack of rude europeans who continually elbow small kids out of the way in queues, meeting characters, buying food etc. etc. And there was Universal Studios too. Harry Potter & Dr Zuess. And Seaworld. And Discovery Cove. It was brilliant. Totally commercial, and a rip off too, but an enjoyable rip off. It felt like a holiday, whereas DLP felt like an endurance test. Grin

Disney cruise to Disney Island as their next plan I actually thought she was on crack.

It's part of their eveeelll plan to take over the world. Starting with the purchase of an island. And some boats.

But yes, it does exist.

It was the cleanliness I think bunchy. And all the old people Disney employ in Florida who seem to actually enjoy their work and the sheer americanness of it all. And the weather. And the ribs. And the lobster. And their strangely huge washing machines.

And the fact they were well used to dds disability and bent over backwards to accommodate. That made me teary.

I realise I sound like an idiot, but I dont care.

A friend of mine went to DisneyWorld on her honeymoon without kids too, they also go for 3 weeks every year as a holiday, they still have no kids.

I loved DLP, we were naughty and took the kids out of school for 3 days and went in January so it was really quiet - no queues, no pushing and shoving, plenty of characters for the kids to meet, etc. We got a great deal with a Disney Hotel and bought meal vouchers online before we left so it wasn't that eyewateringly expensive.

We just had a fab, happy, family holiday

I wanted to go to Disney, sod whether or not the DDs did.

Actually they had a ball.

And as I sat watching the fireworks over Cinderella's castle I shed a tear for, as a child I could no more have dreamt of going to Disney as flying to the moon.

Ewe, I agree about the cleanliness. For the number of people who go in and out of the loos/restaurants every day in each park must be millions they were never dirty, messy or generally anything less than spotless. And as much as the over-friendliness of americans can grate after a while, I found it refreshingly positive as well. In comparison to the unbelieveable rude europeans, there is simply no contest. They did seem to go the extra mile in everything.

we surprised DSD and DSS with a trip to Disneyland Paris. DSS (who was 10 at the time) screamed and cried.

Turns out he doesn't like surprises.

Go to YouTube and look up 'Disney Surprise Fails' - apparently it's rather common...
