Is it just me or is that Disneyland Ad designed to make you feel like an utter bastard for not taking your children there?

This is meant to be lighthearted but no other advert for anything makes me feel this way. Esp if you watch it with your children present; The lifting, swelling, string music and the look of joy and glee on the children's faces and smug contentment of the parents. To top it off it's a "thank-you" to all those wonderful families who let Disneyland share in their celebrations at the time they told their children of this holiday. Surely they are actors?

Although I completely see why you would want to go there and maybe it is a nice family break this advert irritates the hell out of me. It's more that just presenting an attractive product or aspiration, it makes you feel..bad somehow for not doing something amazing for your children, and Disneyland is very, very pricey.

Maybe IABU? - post Chrstmas burn-out Grin

Nope it isn't, you are correct, it is the values you have to adhere to in order to not be bothered/upset by Disney that makes me feel sorry for them...

bunchamunchycrunchycarrots · 31/12/2012 17:55

Confused Wtf offred? Did you mean to sound so up your own arse patronising?

Offred · 31/12/2012 17:59

Meh, why is it patronising/up my own arse?

Offred · 31/12/2012 18:00

Dunno why you'd be bothered by what I think about Disney tbh, I'm certainly not bothered by the legion of Disney fans who are terribly sad for me and my children that we will not get to experience the magic.

Growlithe · 31/12/2012 18:05

I'm glad of all the families who don't like Disney. The more of them there are, the shorter the queues will be for the rest of us. Xmas Wink

Offred · 31/12/2012 18:06

Yeah, exactly, so everyone's a winner! Grin

difficultpickle · 31/12/2012 18:06

We (ds and I) went to DLP when ds was 6. We both thought it was shit and neither of us want to go back. I might consider a trip to the one in Florida at some stage as at least the weather will be better and it won't be full of French people who don't believe in queuing.

wongadotmom · 31/12/2012 18:06

YABU to allow an Advert to make you feel like shit.
That is the whole point of advertising - to destroy your self esteem and confidence and then sell you their wares to make it all better.
Do not be brainwashed by these evil adverts.

yohohoho · 31/12/2012 18:07

Offers I think you protest to much. I go to Florida. I also go hiking, camping etc.

Why do some people think that doing one thing means you can't do the other.

I don't feel sorry for kids that don't go. I choose to go.

I can't find one person on this thread that has said everyone should take their kids and that if you don't they feel sorry for them. Nor can I find people saying 'well going to Florida is what i do so that's what everyone else should do. Because is so MUCH better.

Offred · 31/12/2012 18:12

I feel sorry for people who have values that allow them to enjoy or prize somewhere like Disneyland, I am aware plenty of people don't do one thing and not the other.

People in RL have told me they feel sorry for my dc, maybe not on this thread... Makes me a bit "meh, whatever"... They can feel sorry for us if they wish, it is reciprocated. It is certainly the feeling the advert tries to coerce people into expressing!

I disagree with everything that Disney represents as well as thinking the best thing about the holiday being short queues to ride a roller coaster is a bit depressing.

yohohoho · 31/12/2012 18:13

I also love all these people who haven't been moaning about the queues.

Go when its quiet and you don't have to queue. Simples.

Growlithe · 31/12/2012 18:15

bisjo DH and I got very cross about the queue jumping when we first arrived at DLP, but as we got used to it we almost started admiring it as an art form.

One woman wanted into a queue situated by an ice cream kiosk. We watched her as she waited in the short queue for an ice cream, then turned around with her cornetto and lo, she was in the front of the queue for the ride. Genius. Grin

gazzalw · 31/12/2012 18:15

We have no desire to go to Disneyland ever but DD is very keen - I can see it's going to be a thorn in our side for years to come Xmas Grin

yohohoho · 31/12/2012 18:16

You may think its depressing but people who like rollercoasters enjoy it.

Why does it bother people so much?

Offred · 31/12/2012 18:19

Ha, there are plenty of roller coasters outside Disney!

It doesn't bother me where other people go on holiday, that's not the same as feeling sorry people have those values. Go where you like. I'll still feel sorry that so many people have Disney values. Meh, why does it bother you?

yohohoho · 31/12/2012 18:23

it doesn't bother I find it amusing that someone would feel sorry for someone based on their holiday choice. and see their destination choice as a moral choice.

Yes there are rollercoasters outside Disney. As I said we don't always do Disney. We always go to universal even for a day. Bt just because there are rollercoasters outside Disney, but why does that mean people should go to the ones that are in Disney?

I find this whole attitude quite funny.

Offred · 31/12/2012 18:27

I haven't said that. I don't care where you go. I simply feel sorry that people have values that take them to Disney, just like you think it is funny to make a moral choice over a holiday.

LynetteScavo · 31/12/2012 18:32

For some reason the advert really winds me up - but has the opposite effect and makes me not to go to DL even more.

Yes, I feel guilty because my youngest two DC would love to go, but I really wouldn't.

And those houses are all tidy, with no piles of books or papers lying around.

And the boy in the school uniform who yells "when are we going" annoys me for some reason I really can't fathom.

I am wondering if I could cope with one day of it in Paris...or not. I did it 3 times when I was young, and now would rather sit in a forest by a stream.

I went to LA and didn't go to the one there.....just not my thing.

But then my DM never took me to Alton Towers. I was 13 the first time I went. I thought she was a right stick in the mud (Alton Towers is, her idea of hell Grin)

Morloth · 31/12/2012 20:05

Disney have their shit together when it comes to rollercoasters, I speak as a connoisseur.

I am an 'And' sort of girl, have done rivers and mountains and art galleries and all the rest of it. Still enjoy a good rollercoaster.

I would however now knaw my own ARM off than go camping, if there is no ensuite then I am not going.Grin

I don't 'get' the choice to go camping, some people appear to like it though so hey, whatever floats your boat.

Lol at feeling sorry for my values, is very sad for me.Wink

EweBrokeMyManger · 31/12/2012 20:19

Alright offred I will bite and give you what you want. Explain why Disney represents such a moral vacuum to me as opposed to any other multinational.

And dont come out with the usual made up stuff about Walt Disney being a racist.

My values are that I will take fun anywhere I can find it. Oh and that I like a holiday destination that caters for dd. why is that such a problem for you?

DigWeedSow · 31/12/2012 20:39

This year we've camped, climbed mountains, canoed, cycled with DS.
We've also been to Disney World in Florida.

I'm also interested to hear what these values are?

LynetteScavo · 31/12/2012 20:50

Oh, well that is alright then...if you have camped climbed and canoed, you must be a wholesome family and there fore Disney will be like a sugary desert after a wholesome meal.

I bet it's the people who's only holiday is to Disney (probably due to funds) that certain posters disprove of.

People who go skiing at Feb half term, Disney at Easter and Sailing in the med in may, and hiking in the Alps in the summer will be forgiven.

DigWeedSow · 31/12/2012 21:05

Ahhh, so the wholesomeness cancels out the Disneyness Grin

ByTheWay1 · 31/12/2012 21:10

We have been to DL Paris and Florida - and had an absolute whale of a time at both - so much so that we repeated the experience at both after a couple of years!

I don't get what is wrong with my values - the Disney corporation also a huge charitable foundation - giving millions in aid annually to earthquake victims around the world? They are an ethical sourcing foundation - employing people at above the minimum wage in whichever countries make their products.. and they are trying to get away from the white simpering princess "ideal".... Mulan/Esmerelda/Pocohontas/Tiana being some of the latest..

I spent my college years camping - I hated it, who really likes getting up and dressed and crossing a wet field full of cowpats to get to a cold, dark, bug-infested toilet in the middle of the night - but it was all I could afford, now I have some spare dosh each year we will go where the heck we want.... and that will include the odd trip to Disney....

bunchamunchycrunchycarrots · 31/12/2012 21:15

I took DD to Blackpool in the summer. OMG. Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Disneyworld. I'm dooooooooomed. Shock
