To wonder why I am seeing all these black eyes around?

I work in a busy department store - in the last week or so I'm convinced I have seen an unusually high number of women with black eyes. I wasn't sure until today when I saw two women in the space of an hour, one poor lady also had extensive bruising down one side of her face . . .

I am really shocked by the idea that I am seeing the results of domestic abuse (I have heard that there is more of this over Christmas?) Or could it just be that people have more accidents at this time of year due to drinking? These women did not look like the kind of people to be out on the town fighting - it is a very "nice" shop and area.

I have not seen any men with black eyes.

I don't know what the point of this post is but I feel Shock and Sad if I am right.

I opened this thinking you were referring to make-up but I suspect you might be right. Enforced holidays and the pressures they bring do lead to an increase in domestic violence.

Hassled · 29/12/2012 21:09

You're right about increased levels of DV over Christmas, I know. How horribly sad.

Booyhoo · 29/12/2012 21:10

sadly i think it probably is due to DV. it's a very scary time of year for some women.

Autumnchill · 29/12/2012 21:11

My father is currently sporting an attractive black eye....from paint balling (he slipped and caught his mask and then face on a warning sign!)

SoleSource · 29/12/2012 21:11

Hmm could be tear trough fillers. I had terrible black eyes when I had mine done.

TheCountessOlenska · 29/12/2012 21:16

But that would surely be both eyes SoleSource - these were definitely one sided!

The other thing I just thought of is that maybe these women would normally stay in until the black eye had gone, but due to having to go Christmas/sale shopping were "forced" out in public.

Not saying I have seen loads by the way, just definitely more than I would normally see

Nope sorry your assumption is wrong.

Tear trough fillers can give one sided or both eyes bruises.

Mine was a huve black eye on tbe left. Right was clear.

The amount of pitying looks I got was crazy!

My ex beat me after twelve years of no beating. He did it once I took him to court.

To be labelled as a DV victim be ause ofTeosyal tera trough filler was ironic and felt insulting in a way. I was lucky ex wasn't a psycho staljer and I am rather robust.

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 29/12/2012 21:25

What on earth are tear trough fillers?
And shall I get one?

WorraLorraTurkey · 29/12/2012 21:28

Bizzarre OP, perhaps it's the area you live in?

I know DV rates go up at this time of year, but I can't say I've ever noticed lots of people with black eyes at any time of the year.

Plus, perpetrators of DV are normally a bit more sneaky than that, so the bruises aren't that noticeable.

SoleSource · 29/12/2012 21:29

Lol

The Dr fills tbe hollow groove under eyes. It is expensive but lasted about nine months. Gave me an awful bruise as if I had been punched!!

The Ladies OP sees may have been victims of DV..who knows but just offering one explanation. People have fillers this time of year more tban any other time.

TheCountessOlenska · 29/12/2012 21:34

Well I live in quite an affluent area - it's very nice!

I've never noticed lots of people with black eyes before, that's why I posted - it's weird! I would go so far as to say I practically never see anyone with a black eye usually - but obviously this year I have worked in a very busy shop so have been face to face with a lot more of humanity than usual.

I didn't know DV perpetrators were more sneaky than to give black eyes, I don't know much about it. Maybe people just have more accidents at Christmas.

SoleSource fair enough - I prefer your explanation Smile

SoleSource · 29/12/2012 21:35

Or fillers..

SoleSource · 29/12/2012 21:35

They're from £500 a go.

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 29/12/2012 21:40

£500 pounds?
Ok, I may need them, but fuck, £500?
I'll stick with the Touche Eclat my niece gave me for Christmas.

SoleSource · 29/12/2012 21:41

Ooh I need to get some of that..

Minshu · 29/12/2012 21:42

Shouldn't jump to conclusions. My ex-MIL once gave herself a black-eye from her own car door on Christmas morning while unloading presents... My ex nearly got beaten up when I had a black eye following a bicycle accident as people incorrectly assumed it was his fault.

But, I did notice the same increased incidence of black eyes a week or so before Christmas in our local town centre Sad

FiftyShedsOfGrey · 29/12/2012 21:43

DV crosses all social classes so living in an affluent area would make little difference TBH.

I think it's entirely more likely that you've noticed the first person with a black eye and are now attuned to it...a bit like when you're pregnant everyone else in the world seems to be too.

WorraLorraTurkey · 29/12/2012 21:44

Yes you already said you live in a nice area, though I have no idea what that has to do with DV rates?

I think generally abusers would avoid the facial area as whenever a woman has a black eye or facial bruising, most people tend to think DV rather than pub fight or smacked by a cupboard door IYSWIM?

ChocHobNob · 29/12/2012 21:45

I have seen 2 men with black eyes in the past few days while shopping. I assumed sport or getting drunk and in a fight. Haven't seen any women though.

complexnumber · 29/12/2012 21:47

The thing is, once you have noticed a couple, then you start looking out for more. It's called 'confirmation bias' and effects our view on so much stuff going on around us.

Do you really believe there is a sudden leap in the incidents of DV in your town? Why your town alone?

TheCountessOlenska · 29/12/2012 21:49

Worra I don't know what it has to do with DV rates really, but you did say maybe it was the area I live in and I assumed that you meant a more deprived area = more DV . . . obviously if DV rates are not affected by poverty/unemployment/deprivation then I stand corrected.

I got a black eye one night from falling over in the kitchen and knocking my eye on the corner of the fridge.(Drink had been partaken).
A few people said to me, oh I thought it must have been your ex, who despite his many faults was never physically abusive and was living 60 miles away and I never saw him.
The funny thing was, it wasn't till I looked in the mirror in the morning, thought it was old make up, and cleaned it with eye makeup remover which didn't remove, I realised what it was Blush
