To wonder why I am seeing all these black eyes around?

I work in a busy department store - in the last week or so I'm convinced I have seen an unusually high number of women with black eyes. I wasn't sure until today when I saw two women in the space of an hour, one poor lady also had extensive bruising down one side of her face . . .

I am really shocked by the idea that I am seeing the results of domestic abuse (I have heard that there is more of this over Christmas?) Or could it just be that people have more accidents at this time of year due to drinking? These women did not look like the kind of people to be out on the town fighting - it is a very "nice" shop and area.

I have not seen any men with black eyes.

I don't know what the point of this post is but I feel Shock and Sad if I am right.

I don't think she assumed there was a leap in her town alone.

Yes complexnumber and FiftyShades I have probably noticed one, and then noticed every one. I don't think of it as common injury, although I have done it to myself to be fair, by walking into a glass wall! I'm sure I don't usually see so many though

No really I meant maybe it's just your immediate surroundings or the shop you work in?

I think it's quite unusual for any area to have so many women with black eyes at any time of year.

But as complex said, maybe it's because you were actually looking for them whereas I haven't been?

I'll keep it in mind tomorrow when I'm out shopping as I'm curious now.

Rates of domestic abuse do increase during certain points of the year and Christmas is definitely me of the worst. The increased alcohol consumption and enforced closeness can set off more instances than there might otherwise be.

Having said that, my MiL has a black eye because she tripped off a step on Christmas Day and splatted face first into a pebbled boarder.

CatchingMockingbirds · 29/12/2012 21:55

I'm another who assumed perpetrators of DV would keep bruises to the body to not draw attention to what they were doing.

I think it's a mixture of fillers, falling due to weather/rushing around/too busy thinking about who's coming for Xmas dinner to watch where they're going, and the odd case of DV coupled with the fact that now you've noticed it you're seeing more of them as they've been brought to your attention.

Cognitive miser, I think it's called, when only a small amount of information is processed by us so you've maybe not noticed it before.

Sole I cut my eyebrow like that before.

I dropped something and my reflex just made me bend down really fast to catch it...except I didn't realise how close I was to the bloody cupboard edge!

complexnumber · 29/12/2012 21:59

"I don't think she assumed there was a leap in her town alone."

I had assumed that she hadn't travelled the country to observe how many black eyes on women she could spot in other towns.

Obviously my mistake.

Develops OCD and punches self in other eye to even it up

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 29/12/2012 21:59

It's true Worra.
I remember hitchhiking through Germany when I was about 18/19 and I saw a man with one leg, I think it was in the Black Forest.
I swear my friend and I spotted one legged men for the rest of the holiday.
We even saw a three legged dog, and offended the owner when we collapsed in giggles.

SoleSource · 29/12/2012 22:01

WorraLorraTurkey · 29/12/2012 22:03

My Stepdad has a shiner at present. He dreamt he was being chased by a bear and fell out of bed.

complexnumber · 29/12/2012 22:05

I can't remember the last time I saw a one legged woman. Why's that?

WeWilsonAMerryChristmas · 29/12/2012 22:08

I think There's more accidents in the home at this time of year too - genuine accidents, not necessarily connected to DV, through combinations of more people being in the home rather than work, alcohol, falling over the turkey, etc.

WorraLorraTurkey · 29/12/2012 22:09

falling over the turkey, etc.

Wilson!! Xmas Grin
