To feel totally uncultured having only seen my first ballet today?

Went to see Sleeping Beauty today with exMIL, it was wonderful, we had a fabulous time, and it was simply stunning.

However.

Sat in the theater, aged 21, I was surrounded by people of various ages, including those much younger than me. I felt highly uneducated and uncultured I remember going to panto as a child, but didn't see my first 'proper' show until I was in secondary school, think I was 14. I'm yet to see an opera.

Am I a total commoner?

I have never been to the ballet, and I've only been to one opera, but I'd still say I was cultured and I'm definitely highly educated . It's often a class thing. Doesn't mean you're uncultured or thick. Like anything else, go again if you like it! Glad you enjoyed it. I must try it sometime..

I'm 33 and only saw my first ballet this year (loved it) but certain don't feel uneducated or un cultured!

Nothing to do with being uneducated or common.

I've seen 3 ballets in London and I fucking hated them all.

I wouldn't have bothered with the last two had my brother not been working on the lighting and guilt tripped me into keeping his wife company.

It was times like that I wished I was a smoker so I could have made my excuses and popped outside

Haven't been to the ballet but did go through a phase of trying to be more cultured. We spent an absolute fortune on seats at The Royal Opera House to see an opera DS1 fell asleep once and DH fell asleep twice. Decided it wasn't very cultural to waste that amount of money. ( I do like art and theatre so there is still hope for me!)

If you thought it wonderful and had a stunning time, that's fantastic.

Who cares at what age you have discovered a new pleasure, it's irrelevant and good for you for giving something new a try.

It's too easy to sneer at supposedly elite or unaccessible culture and I admire you for having an open mind.

There are great deals on tickets year-round, make it a new year resolution to see more ballet. Better than the usual dull ones!

I have been to see two ballets, no operas. I wouldn't mind going again.

Well, I too can double your age, and then some, and I've never seen a ballet either. I'd like to, but it's just never quite got to the top of my 'to do' list.

I was an actor, have seen every conceivable type of performance many, many times. I've only seen one ballet and hated it! And I think I was 21 at the time too. . Brilliant that you enjoyed it, and brilliant that you took the chance and went. But all it says about you is that you loved your first ballet!

I think I was mid 20s before I saw a ballet or an opera. More to do with where I lived I think.

I moved to Oxford and the theatre often had more 'cultured' shows than I'd had the chance to see.

As long as you enjoyed it who cares?

I have not seen an opera for ages and only went to the ballet again this year, purely because of where I live.
